Inter-college fest concludes

Ludhiana, February 12
A two-day inter-college cultural festival being organised at Khalsa College for Women concluded here today.
Contests for music items including singing “vaar” and six fine arts contests, including life sketching, clay modelling, composition, still life painting, poster making and landscape were held today.

While students of Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women clinched the overall trophy in music, the trophy for fine arts events went to Government College for Women.

Renu Sharma and Jaspreet from Khalsa College for Women and Jaspreet won Bhagat Puran Singh Award, sponsored by Babli Singh, an artist.

The contests for “kissa” singing based on the love stories of Sassi-Punnu, Heer and Mirza won applause. Dr Kuljit Shelly, former Dean, Delhi University, presided. Ms Varinder Thind and members of the college managing committee were present on the occasion.

Vaar (group): GGN Khalsa College 1, Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women 2, Mata Ganga College for Women, Kotan 3, and Khalsa College for Women (consolation).

Vaar (individual): Lakhwinder Singh from GGN Khalsa College 1, Mandeep from Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women 2, Jaspreet from Khalsa College for Women 3, and Harpreet from Mata Ganga College for Women, Kotan (consolation).

Kissa gyan: Manpreet from Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women 1, Sonia from Mata Ganga College for Women, Kotan, and Parampreet from Khalsa College for Women 3, and Rupinder from Guru Hargobind College for Women, Sidhwan Khurd (consolation).

Life sketching (for MA classes): Varinder from Khalsa College for Women 1, Supreet from Government College for Women 2, and Geetika Goel from Khalsa College for Women 3.

Life sketching (for BA classes): Prabhjot from Government College for Women 1, Parminder from Government College for Women 2, and Anu from Khalsa College for Women 3.

Clay modelling: Renu from Khalsa College for Women 1, Ishpreet from Khalsa College for Women 2, and Shikha from Government College for Women 3.

Composition: Monika from Government College for Women 1, Puja Bajaj from Khalsa College for Women 2, and Geetika Goel from Khalsa College for Women 3.

Poster-making: Puja Talwar from Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women 1, Harsimran from Government College for Women 2, and Amandeep from Khalsa College for Women 3.

Landscape: Poonam from Khalsa College for Women 1, Jaspreet from Khalsa College for Women 2, and Nidhi from Government College for Women 3.

Still life painting: Varinder from Government College for Women 1, Navpreet from Ramgarhia Girls’ College 2, and Kulbir from Khalsa College for Women 3.

NCC girl cadets take ‘B’ certificate exam

Ludhiana, February 12
As many as 79 cadets of 3 Punjab Girls Bn, NCC Ludhiana, appeared for the ‘B’ certificate examinations held at the local Guru Nanak Girls College today.
These cadets are from various institutions of Ludhiana district, namely GHG Khalsa College, Gurusar Sudhar, Guru Nanak National College, Doraha, Swami Ganga Giri Janata Girls College, Raikot, Govt College for women, Ludhiana, Khalsa College for Women, Ludhiana, Master Tara Singh Memorial College, Ludhiana, Ramgarhia Girls College, Guru Nanak Girls College, Ludhiana and SDP College, Ludhiana.

Clearing ‘B’ certificate is a must for appearing in the ‘C’ certificate exams. The cadets cover various military subjects like map reading, signals, first aid, etc during the training year.

The administrative arrangements for conducting the examinations were done by Dr Charanjit Mahal, Principal, Guru Nanak Girls College, Model Town, Ludhiana.

Col Kuldeep Singh, Group Commander, NCC Group HQ, Ludhiana, visited Guru Nanak Girls College during the exams.

Keep pace with technology, says PTU VC

Mandi Gobindgarh, February 12
Emphasis should be laid on imbibing a penchant for learning new things in order to keep pace with the changing technology, asserted Dr Y.S. Rajan Vice-Chancellor, Punjab Technical University (PTU), Jalandhar. He was speaking at the first convocation and prize distribution function of the Punjab Institute of Management and Technology (PIMT), Mandi Gobindgarh, today.

Dr Rajan awarded degrees to around 300 students of MBA, MCA and BCA. Dr S.K. Salwan, senior adviser, PTU, was the guest of honour. Dr S.K. Salwan awarded prizes to 70 students. Medals were awarded to 30 students of MCA and BCA. Eight students were decorated with the college colours.

Polytechnic students put up exhibition

Ludhiana, February 12
The students of the Community Polytechnic wing, Satguru Ram Singh Government Polytechnic for Women, Rishi Nagar, organised an exhibition here yesterday.
At the exhibition, students taking courses varying in duration from three to six months displayed the items that they had prepared in their classes. The items included soft toys, designer dresses for the family, a variety of baked and steamed vegetarian dishes, and electrical and electronic goods.

Ms Poonam Syal from the Ministry of Human Resource Development said the courses aimed at encouraging self-employment among the students. Ms H.K. Toor, Principal of the polytechnic, discussed the plan of the courses. She said subjects of technology transfer and technology support services were being given the main thrust. Mr S.P.Singh, project officer, and Mr Gogi Mahajan, assistant project officer, were also present.

PCTE bags top three MBA positions

Ludhiana, February 12
MBA students of Punjab College of Technical Education (PCTE) have bagged the golden, silver and bronze medals by grabbing top three positions in the overall result of Punjab Technical University declared yesterday.

Monica Chawla obtained 2760 marks out 3200, Shivani Bector 2743 marks and Cheenu Garg 2733. Shweta Kapoor and Vishesh Gupta were ranked fifth and ninth with 2686 and 2645 marks, respectively. As a result, the college achieved a tally of five overall positions among the top 10 students. This was the third batch of MBA students in the college.

Candle exhibition with Valentine theme

When it is Valentine, love is in the air. And it definitely is. That probably prompted Charu Malhotra, a young and upcoming designer and exotic candle-maker from Ludhiana, to choose love as the theme for her ‘candle exhibition’ under the name of her own brand, Visual Lite.

The exhibition was inaugurated by the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Anurag Verma, at the Satluj Club here today. Mr Verma took a round of the exhibition. He said he was fascinated at the creativity of the candle-maker. Lauding her efforts, he observed, Charu would go a long way in her creative pursuit.

Talking about the theme, Charu pointed out since it was Valentine season and everybody seemed to be driven by passion, she had decided on love as her theme. Moreover, the candles are not only a symbol of romance, but a sign of good luck too. She said although in India there was not as yet the tradition of presenting candles as gifts, abroad candles were most popular as it was believed to bring good luck.

The exhibition, which is only second for Charu, attracted a stream of visitors on the first day today. She said she had found a great deal of interest among the people about the candles.

“What really made me feel good was that people see each and every candle minutely,” she said, hoping to do “good business”.
