Bad food habits leading to health problems among rural women
Our Correspondent

Jhajjar, February 9
Some startling facts regarding the health problems among the rural women have come to light as a result of informations gathered during the three-day Health Mela, which concluded here today.

These health problems were caused mainly due to bad food habits among the rural women, despite the fact that nutritious diet was available to them. The Ayurvedic Department collected informations about the food habits among the women in countryside during their Health Mela.

As per the reports of the doctors attending to the patient at their stalls, most of the rural women complained of chest infection, digestive problems and lack of calcium, leading to joint pains.

Patients from about 30 nearby villages came to the Ayurvedic stall for check up.

Dr Dayawati Sahrawat of the Central Research Institute of Ayurvedic, Delhi, and Dr Anil Kumar of Gaur Brahamin Ayurvedic College, Rohtak, said that the rural women were not conscious about their health, which led to such recurring problems among them.

Dr Sahrawat said that such health problems could be kept away by having nutritious diet, including uncooked vegetables like radish, carrots, cabbage etc., and salad, easily available to even the most poor families in the rural areas.

The doctors said that about 1,000 patients were attended by CRIA at the Ayurvedic stall, of which about 40 per cent were women.

They were informed by about 300 women, who were checked up in the Ayurvedic stall, that they hardly ever had uncooked food and salad. About 25 per cent of these women revealed that they occasionally consumed salad, which were left over by their husbands.

The deficiency of proteins available in the uncooked vegetables and salad caused such diseases like digestive problems, stomachache, headache etc., said Dr Sahrawat. Another major cause of such disease was not being time bound in excrement and urinal release, Dr Sahrawat said.

The local Ayurvedic Department and Gaur Brahamin Ayurvedic College, Rohtak, also put up a stall where about 5,000 patients turned up for check up during the three-day Health Mela. They informed that Ayurvedic medicines worth about Rs 1.5 lakh were distributed with the association of Ayurvedic pharmaceutical firms.

A total of about 20,000 patients turned up for routine check up during the three-day Health Mela.

However, there were number of complaints about the lack of facilities at the Health Mela.

According to sources, the Union Government provided financial aid of Rs 8 lakh for the organisation of this Health Mela. However, the doctors complained that the arrangements were not up to the mark and they had to face a number of problems there.

Maintenance of civic amenities by MCD flayed
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, February 9
The Leader of the Opposition in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Mr Arya, said that road and sanitation condition in the national Capital was in a pathetic condition. Damaged roads and choked sewer and drainage system were evident everywhere.

He said that the L-G, Mr Vijai Kapoor, had also pointed out the deteriorating conditions of roads and the sanitation problem in the city and held the Municipal Corporation of Delhi responsible in a meeting with the Chief Minister, Mrs Sheila Dikshit.

Mr Arya criticised the revised budget estimates of 2003-2004 and the budget estimates of 2004-2005. During the current year, the department had only collected Rs 455 crore as property tax upto January 15. It was unclear how the target set for the year 2003-2004 would be achieved, he said.

He condemned the increase in rates of fees and fines, which reflected the inefficiency of the civic body. Instead, he wanted the administration to be made efficient and transparent so as to augment the recovery of fees and fines.

The MCD should increase its income by recovery of regularisation charges after implementing the Malhotra Committee report, Mr Arya said.

Besides, there were number of internal resources which could be exploited to increase the income of the corporation, he said.

The Municipal Valuation Committee, which submitted the property tax collection report, was full of discrepancies, he alleged.

The categorisation of colonies was not based on the ground reality as a result the property tax on old properties would increase under the Unit Area System of tax collection.

Property in rural and urban villages will also be subjected to property tax, which were earlier exempted from the tax. He alleged that under the new system the property tax on old colonies occupied by lower and middle class people would increase by 500 per cent to 5000 per cent.

Talking about the corruption, he alleged that the MCD had been rated as the second most corrupt organization. A number of scandals were highlighted, which included the misappropriation in the salary of muster roll employees engaged by the CSE department, scam in purchase of desks and mid-day meal, scam in the purchase of 30 kv generator and books amounting to Rs 10 lakh in Hardyal Library.
