A large number of discrepancies and irregularities, including special out-of-the-way facilities to inmates at Central Jail here, have been detected by the district administration, which conducted surprise checks today following newsreports of flouting of norms.

Proclaimed offender held after 26 yrs

A proclaimed offender had managed to befool the Punjab police for 26 years. He used to extort money from rehri owners and shopkeepers at Jakhal railway station in Haryana all these years. He was finally arrested last evening.

Hanspal rules out contesting from Ludhiana
Ludhiana, February 5
The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president, Mr H.S. Hanspal, today set to rest the speculations about the possibility of his contesting from Ludhiana parliamentary constituency in the ensuing general elections. He said he had no intention of contesting from anywhere in the state, including Ludhiana.

Grateful villagers acknowledge NRI’s goodwill gesture

Mandi Ahmedgarh (Ludhiana), February 5
Acknowledgement is the greatest reward. Mr Jagpal Singh Khangura genuinely deserved this reward from the natives of several villages who had gathered here today to express their gratitude to him. The Babu Joginder Singh Memorial Welfare Trust set up by him in memory of his father today donated 50 computers to 11 schools. Besides, the trust also distributed 114 sewing machines among destitute and needy women of the area.

87 pc slum children malnourished

About 200 million people live in urban India, out of which 30 per cent are below poverty line. They live in slums without basic health facilities. Around 60 per cent of them are women and children. Poor environmental conditions compounded by poverty, malnutrition and deficient health care, make them susceptible to a host of diseases. And the children are the worst sufferers.

Contests test students’ creative skills

The Home Science Department of Ramgarhia Girls’ College organised flower arrangement, mehndi, rangoli, embroidery and bindi making competitions here today. The aim of the competitions was to bring out the talent of the students besides developing an aesthetic sense in them. More than 50 students participated in various competitions. Ms Ritu Sood, Head of the Home Science Department expressed happiness over the over-whelming response to the various competitions.

Health mela from Feb 8
Sahnewal, February 5
A three-day health mela will be organised at Government Primary School, Nandpur, from February 8. Giving this information, Dr S.S. Dhir, SMO, said doctors and experts will educate people about causes and cure of high blood pressure, various physical deformities and deficiencies, dietary supplements for expecting mothers, other diseases and necessary precautions.

Raids by Central Excise on Aarti Steel

As many as 50 officials of the intelligence wing of the Central Excise department conducted surprise raids at the production unit of Aarti Steels Ltd in Industrial Area. Simultaneous raids were conducted at the residential premises of the owners in the Gurdev Nagar area also.
