Bali rules out bus fare hike
Tribune News Service

Shimla, February 3
Mr G.S. Bali Himachal the Transport Minister, today ruled out hiking the bus fares in the next six months.

At a press conference here he said the bus fares had to be revised following sharp increase in the prices of diesel and spares in the past three years. The previous BJP government had set up a high-level committee, which recommended an increase in fares, but it failed to implement its report. As a result the state road transport corporation accumulated losses to the extent of Rs 277 crore. Last year the corporation suffered a loss of Rs 92 crore. He said government could consider reduction in fares if the price of diesel deceased.

He said besides fare hike the government took other steps to improve the functioning of the Corporation which was left in bad shape by the Dhumal regime. He said fuel efficiency had increased from 3.55 km to 3.75 km a litre, the financial burden on account of overtime had been reduced by Rs 82 lakh and increase in composite fee had fetched additional Rs five crore. The advertisement revenue shot up from Rs 17 lakh to Rs 88 lakh. The total revenue had increased by Rs 18 crore in the past 10 months against a target of Rs 20 crore fixed for year.

Besides a special drive to regulate the operations private bus operators 2840 vehicles were challaned and 18 route permits cancelled for violations.

He asked the former Transport Minister, Mr K.K. Kapoor, to prove his allegation that irregularities had been committed in the purchase of 30 minibuses. The buses were purchased on the direction of the High Court for the Shimla town to ease traffic congestion. He maintained that Mr Kapoor was aware of the encroachments in and around bus stands at various places but did not take action to eject unauthorised occupants.

Abandoned girl issue gets complex
Our Correspondent

Solan, February 3
The case of the three-day-old girl abandoned by her parents in August 2002 and later adopted by another couple has become more complex, with the Child Welfare Council’s refusal to disclose the identity of her foster parents. The girl, adopted legally after police failure to trace her parents, has become an issue of concern for the administration and the police.

A communication was sent from the Director-General of Police to the Secretary, Child Welfare Council, on January 3 to make available blood samples of the child for facilitating a DNA test. No reply had been received from the council, said the police.

The police was also trying to verify the antecedents of the Kalka-based mother of the abandoned child, who was not found to be the legally wedded wife of the man she claimed to be her husband. The man concerned was fighting a divorce case against his wife.

The Joint Director of the Social Justice and Empowerment Board, Mr Sanjiv Bhatnagar, said the rules of the council were clear and the identity of the couple adopting the child could not be disclosed. He said a probe conducted by the police at the time of adoption had confirmed the fact that parents of an abandoned child were not traceable.
