Hi-tech dialysis facility in city
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, February 2
Sigma New Life Heart Institute has started a renal wing with facilities for dialysis and urology services under the banner — the Sigma New Life Kidney Foundation. Four state-of-the-art machines ensure ultrapure water for dialysis.

Dr Venkatesh, DM Nephrology, who had worked at the PGI, Chandigarh, will be looking after the nephrology services. He said,“Most of these patients are in a moribund condition and suffer from multi-organ disease. Now they would be getting quality services close to home”.

Dr Amardeep Singh, Managing Director of the institute, said kidney failure was on the rise because of aging population, rampant lifestyle diseases like diabetes and hypertension. In most instances, only renal transplantation was the choice for chronic renal failure patients. But due to non-acceptance of cadaver transplants and paucity of donors, many of these patients were forced to live with life-long dialysis. “Ultrapure dialysis differ from conventional dialysis as the bacterial toxin and bacterial counts are reduced to bare minimum in this process”, said Dr Amardeep.

An acute renal failure was a very common problem, especially in severe trauma cases, septicemia, dehydration, inadvertent use of analgesic, post operative complications and many other medical conditions. He said, "Wide spectrum of kidney diseases, which would result in loss of proteins in urine, can occur at any age. This requires nephrology care and full diagnostic work up, including kidney biopsy in most of the patients. Poisoning cases too, require specialised nephrology services to flush out the poison from the body.”
