Workshop to train drug regulators Mohali, January 19 He highlighted the elements of capacity-building project and indicated that the government had taken key steps to strengthen the testing laboratories, including the establishment of new laboratories in three states, expansion of the existing labs, and strengthening of the labs with equipment, materials and supplies. He emphasised that as required by the World Bank, the time for the testing of drug samples in public laboratories will be brought down significantly. Dr C.L. Kaul, Director of NIPER, read the welcome address in which he said the workshop would train drug regulators at par with their international counterparts and keep pharmacy professionals abreast with the changing technologies, regulatory requirements, quality assurance and good manufacturing practices. 45 examined at camp for psychiatric problems Chandigarh, January 19 Patients with anxiety disorder, including adjustment problems, obsessive, compulsive disorder and hypochondriacal disorder were attended upon. Medicines and counselling was given to the patients suffering from depression, substance abuse and schizophrenia. Some patients were referred to the half Way Home in Sector 47 for social and occupational rehabilitation. The patients were told that the district mental health programme ran a daily OPD except on Thursday in the hospital. The camp was organised by the Department of Psychiatry, Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32. |
Reiki camp concludes Chandigarh, January 19 The camps were conducted by Dr Sonika reiki grandmaster. According to Dr Sonika, reiki benefits those suffering from various diseases, including high blood pressure, heart attack, insomnia, cancer and arthritis and no medicines are required. Touch healing and mass healing-cum-meditation are part of the programme. An audio-visual presentation was also made. The organisation holds reiki camps free of cost every month. |
St John’s bags cricket title Chandigarh, January 19 In today’s match, St John’s beat St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, by 24 runs. Former cricketer Vivek Razdan honoured the winning team. Earlier, St John’s won the toss and elected to bat first. They scored 139 runs in 25 overs. Arjun scored 30 runs followed by Anaad Gill 27 runs and Jasdeep 23 runs. Ankit claimed four wickets for 17 runs. Kanisth and Geetanshu both bagged two wickets each for 16 and 21 runs, respectively. In reply, St Stephen’s School were bowled out for 115 runs. Sourav made 42 runs, followed by Kanisth 25 runs and Jaskaran 21 runs. Kritarth, Abhay, Gaurav Pal and Jasdeep claimed two wickets each. Twelve schools took part in the tournament. City team enter semis
in baseball Chandigarh entered the semi-finals of the girls’ section of the 15th Junior National Baseball Championship being played at the Panjab University Campus on Monday. Chandigarh will now face Goa in the semi-final to be played on Tuesday morning. Chandigarh outplayed Orissa in a one-sided match. The match was terminated in the third innings due to difference of more than 10 points (11-0). Amit (2), Ravinder (2), Atul, Ashish, Brij Bhushan, Pankaj and Neeraj (1 each) scored for the host. Madhya Pradesh were the third team to enter semi-final round after terminating the challenge of Punjab by a clear 10-4 margin. Though the match lasted five innings, Madhya Pradesh outclassed Punjab in all departments of the game. Parvej (2), Rahul, Ratnesh, Neeraj, Hemant, Balindu, Pankaj, Robin
and Amit (1 each) scored for Madhya Pradesh. Punjab reduced the margin through Ashushtosh, Jatinder, Veereklov and Akash (1 each). The fourth quarter-final match between Karnataka and Kerala will be played on Tuesday morning and their winners will meet Madhya Pradesh. None of three quarter-final matches could last five innings. Chandigarh, Delhi and Madhya Pradesh entered semi-finals. Delhi beat Karnataka by 11-0 and Madhya Pradesh beat Himachal Pradesh by 11-1. Chandigarh girls prevailed over Punjab in a high-scoring match by 18-8. The match ended in the fourth innings. Heema top scored for Chandigarh with four runs. Manju (3), Sarita (2), Leela (2), Pooja (2), Rani (1), Sangita (1) and Ruby (1) were the other scorers for the winners. Kiran (2), Ritu (2), Neha (20, Harpreet (1) and Ranbir (1) were the star performers for Punjab. Goa entered the semi-final at the expense of Kerala whom they beat by 7-0. The semi-final line-up in the girls’ section is MP vs Delhi and Chandigarh vs Goa.

A school playground open to outsiders Chandigarh, January 19 Stating this, Ms Punam Dogra, the Principal of the school, said their aim was to serve the local residents. She said Sector 48 residents did not have access to any sports facility. She said they proposed to allot space for roller-skating, volleyball, cricket, football and horse-riding. A separate play area for the primary section with safe playground equipment was meant to allow free play to the young ones, she added. The Principal said besides the
regular physical education classes, coaching will be provided in activity period also. She said each child was free to choose his or her own sport. Ms Dogra said to begin with they had encouraged the tiny tots to go in for skating. For this, they have also taken the services of experts in the field. The school authorities also plan to have a multi-purpose concrete court for skating, basketball, handball and other sports. Ms Dogra said karate classes were also planned. She said some representatives from nearby housing societies had welcomed the decision of the school to allow the use of school playground to the children other than school students. She said the students excelling in sports would also be motivated with attractive cash incentives. She said they planned to open a sports-cum-cultural club. |
Teaching martial art at the age of 14 Chandigarh, January 19 Nitin from Chandigarh and Ravish from Mohali were sent by the Choi Kwang Do Martial Art, Chandigarh, for a black belt competition in Mumbai. The competition was witnessed by Master Jungnu Nanda, V degree black belt, the president and chief instructor of the All-India Choi Kwang Do Martial Art, USA. Choi Kwang Do is a modern art based on principles derived from bio-mechanics, kinesiology, chiropractice and
psycho-neutrology. |
