Development
works put on hold: Rana Chandigarh, January 13 Mr Rajinder Rana, BJP media in charge, said here in a statement that as the Virbhadra Government in Himachal was too busy in political witch-hunt to nail down BJP leaders, all developmental works started by the former BJP government had been put on hold.

Chief Minister shown black flags at Baroha Hamirpur, January 13 Earlier, BJP workers burnt an effigy of the Chief Minister at Touni Devi before marching to Baroha village. BJP workers raised anti Congress and pro-party slogans and held a demonstration near Baroha ground, 5 km from here this afternoon. Despite tight security BJP workers protested against the inauguration of Pandola khad bridge by the Chief Minister which they had inaugurated four days ago. NSUI workers led by Mr Kewal Singh Pathania, state president of the organisation raised anti-BJP slogans on this occasion and held A demonstration against Earlier, the Chief Minister dedicated to the people two bridges over Balh Nullah and Pandola Khad each costing Rs 25 lakh. Mr Brij Bihari Lal Butail, Mr G.S. Bali, Cabinet Ministers and Mrs Anita Verma, MLA were also present on the occasion. Addressing a public meeting at Balh village, the Chief Minister criticised BJP leader Prem Kumar Dhumal for trying to mislead the people on the development of Hamirpur since the Congress government was voted to power. He said in the past 10 months rupees one crore was spent on development in the district. The Chief Minister said the BJP had done nothing for the development of Hamirpur. He alleged corruption was rampant during the BJP regime and the HP SSS board was an example of this. He told the people that the board would be strengthened to meet needs of the people. The Chief Minister announced upgradation of Balh Primary School to Middle level and three more rooms for the newly upgraded school. This school would be named after a local Martyr Subedar, Dalip Singh. Mr G.S. Bali, Mr B.B.L. Butail, both ministers and Mrs Anita Verma, MLA also addressed the people. |
CM justifies inaugurating projects Hamirpur, January 13 Talking to mediapersons here last night, he charged former Chief Minister and BJP leader Prem Kumar Dhumal with inciting his party workers to perform inaugural ceremonies of all such projects where he (Virbhadra Singh) was to visit and inaugurate. “Such actions of the BJP leader and his workers will not bring any results, and in fact, the BJP will lose credibility among the masses”, he said, adding whatever BJP workers did at Pandola Khad Bridge last week was against norms and showed their utter “frustration”. Mr G.S. Bali, Transport Minister, Ms Anita Verma, MLA and Mr Devesh Kumar, Deputy Commissioner, were also present at the press conference. He blasted the former Chief Minister for supporting “corrupt” persons rather than helping the government weed out corruption. He rejected a debate with BJP leaders on the issue of development as proposed by Prof Dhumal. The Chief Minister alleged that while Prof Dhumal demanded a debate with him on development and related issues, inside the Vidhan Sabha, he shunned the same. He said the Vidhan Sabha was the only right forum for discussions. Mr Virbhadra Singh charged the former BJP government with misuse of funds. The BJP should seek an apology from the public for the Samirpur Rest House which had become a white elephant, he said. The Chief Minister announced that the working of the HP State Subordinate Services Selection Board was being revamped. Mr Virbhadra Singh directed the Hamirpur Chief Medical Officer, Dr Suman Sharma, to submit a detailed report regarding operations undertaken at the district hospital, Hamirpur, during the past three months. He issued the orders following complaints that all was not well with the institution. The Chief Minister also took part in the Lohri celebrations here. |
CM lauds Scouts, Girl Guides Dharamsala, January 13 Earlier Education Minister Ms Asha Kumari also addressed the rally and assured all help to revive scouts and guides movement in the state which had lagged in the past. Rural Development Minister Sat Mahajan, Forest Minister Chander Kumar, Chairperson of the HP Women Commission Ms Viplove Thakur, Chairman of the HP Education Board Mr B.R. Rahi and N.S.U.I. president Kewal Singh Pathania were also present on the occasion. |
Question paper scam: VB finds concrete evidence Shimla, January 13 The special investigation team is now working to identify the end beneficiaries in the scam. It has decided to quiz Dr S.D. Sharma, who quit as Vice-Chancellor following his indictment by the inquiries ordered by the Chancellor, Mr V.S. Kokje, into various irregularities in the institution. Besides irregularities in the award of contract for printing, investigations have revealed that the printer happens to be a relative of Dr Sharma. Further, the unit did not have the capacity to carry out the printing job and got it done from other units. A scrutiny of the accounts of all printing units by the investigating agency revealed that actual payments amounted to about Rs 32 lakh only whereas the university paid more than Rs 63 lakh for the purpose on inflated rates. The university recently awarded contract to a new printer at 30 per cent lower rates. |

Fire in HP
secretariat Shimla, January 13 The fire started when pipes of the central heating system installed in Ellerslie, the old secretariat building, got overheated. The insulation material which covered the pipes caught fire in the corridor on the ground floor near the office of Mr Kaul Singh, Irrigation and Public Health Minister. As the fire broke out during office hours, employees immediately informed the Fire Brigade, which arrived and put the blaze out before it could spread. UNI adds:

Close shave for rights panel member Kulu, January 13 Mr Chauhan was immediately shifted to the zonal hospital here. Deputy Commissioner R.D. Nazim and Superintendent of Police Anand Pratap Singh reached the hospital and arranged his shifting from here to Shimla IGM Hospital as his jaw was badly damaged in the mishap. Mr Chauhan was accompanied by his wife who sustained minor injuries and was kept under observation at the zonal hospital. The driver of the truck has been arrested and a case of reckless driving registered against him. |
