Fish farmers told to be careful

Maintain water level of the pond to 4.0-5.0 feet to provide warm deeper layers of water during late night and early morning.
In this connection Punjab Agricultural University has suggested to avoid that the application organic manures and inorganic fertilisers if the colour of the pond water is grass green.

Reduce feeding---- even upto 0.5% of fish biomass present in the pond. Harvest common carp so as to avoid its natural breed in pond. Apply quick lime @ 50kg/acre to prevent incidence of disease during unfavourable winter temperature. If the fish shows any haemorrhage/ulcers or damaging of fins/scales etc., contact the Department zoology and Fisheries, PAU, Ludhiana alongwith samples of water and diseased fish.

Farmers to honour Gurbhajan Gill

Mr Gurbhajan Singh Gill, Editor of Changi Kheti, farm magazine of Punjab Agricultural University here has been selected for Sant Charan Singh Puraskar by the farming community of the Dharamkot area of Moga. The award will be presented to him during the Maghi fair to be organised under the patronage of Sant Mastan Singh at Dharamkot.

Kila Raipur lads bag hockey title

Ludhiana, January 12
Nankana Sahib Public School of Kila Raipur prevailed over Prithipal Academy, Ludhiana, 4-3 to bag the title in the Inaugural District-Level Hockey Tournament (u-14) organised by the Youngsters Hockey Revival Club at the astro turf ground of Punjab Agricultural University today.

The match was decided through a golden goal as the two teams were tied three-all at the end of regular period.

It were Kila Raipur lads who went into the lead as early as in the second minute of the title clash through Sandeep Singh. Six minutes later, Prithipal Academy restored the parity through Sukhbir Singh. Local lads went ahead in the 20th minute, goal scored by Gurvinder Singh.

Nankana Sahib Public School players pressed hard for the equaliser and made repeated attacks on their rivals’ territory. Their pressure tactics bore fruit in the 41st minute when Depinder Singh found the target to level the score two-all. They earned the lead two minutes later when Depinder, again sounded the board to make it 3-2.

After wasting a number of scoring chances, Prithipal Academy lads managed to level the score at 3-3 in the 54th minute through a field goal scored by Gurvinder Singh. The time ran out and the two sides failed to score the winning goal, the golden goal rule was applied. Kila Raipur team, without sweating much, scored the all-important goal in the third minute to clinch the match 4-3.

Earlier, in the match for the hard-line cup, Doraha Hawks trounced Government High School, Narangwal, 4-0. The scorers were Jaspreet Singh (23rd minute), Jajit Singh Singh (51st and 54th minute) and Rajinder Singh (53rd minute).

In the u-12 category, Youngsters Hockey Club and Sacred Heart Convent School, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar, played a goal less draw and the former were declared the winners on the basis of their yesterday’s 2-0 win over the later.

Mr Sukhbir Grewal, a former international hockey star, distributed prizes. Mr Sohan Lal Lotey, District Sports Officer, Mr Gurbhajan Singh Grewal, Mr Teja Singh Dhaliwal, honorary general secretary, Punjab Basketball Association, were among others who attended the closing function.

Maiden win for Nauhria Mal Jain School

Ludhiana, January 12
Sumit and Arvind took five wickets each as Nauhria Mal Jain Senior Secondary School, Hazoori Road, defeated Government Model Senior Secondary School, Punjab Agricultural University, by 31 runs to register their maiden victory in the Parle-PCA Inter-School Cricket Tournament (u-17) being organised by the Ludhiana District Cricket Association at the SD Government College for Boys ground, here today.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, Nauhria Mal Jain School could muster only 87 runs in 25 overs. The notable contributors were Sumit and Rahul who chipped in with 27 and 21 runs, respectively.

Defending a modest total, Sumit and Arvind of Nauhria Mal Jain did a commendable job by restricting Government Model School to a low score of 56 all out after 15 overs. Except for Naman (10) no other batsman could reach the double figure.

Earlier, Newton, head of the sports department, Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar, inaugurated the match.

Brief scores: Nauhria Mal Jain Senior Secondary School — 87 all out in 25 overs (Rahul 21, Sumit 27 and Rohit 10 n.o; Manpreet 2 for 6, Rohit Shyam 3 for 26, Neeraj 1 for 10 and Sandeep 1 for 12).

Government Model Senior Secondary School — 56 all out in 15 overs (Naman 10; Sumit 5 for 15 and Arvind 5 for 13). The match on Wednesday is between Government Model Senior Secondary School, PAU, and SDP, Senior Secondary School, Hazoori Road.

Inter-school judo meet held

Ludhiana, January 12
Two hundred judokas took part in the first district public schools judo championship held at Ryan International School, Urban Estate, Phase II, here yesterday. Ms Anupama Sapra, Principal of the host school, inaugurated the one-day meet while Mr Prem Singh, secretary, Punjab Throwball Association, gave away prizes to participants.

In the boys’ section, Sukhmanjeet Singh and Anubhav Dhingra of Ryan International School, Hari Ram Kumar and Kulwant Singh of SK Memorial High School, and Jaskaran and Rahul Mehta of BCM School, Focal Point, won gold medals.

In the girls’ section, Sonia Rani, Gurnoor Kaur and Megha Rana of Ryan International School, Deepika Sharma and Charanjit Kaur of Ramgarhia Girls’ Senior Secondary School, and Geeta and Harpreet Kaur of SK Memerial High School won gold medals.
