Cop, 3 militants killed in valley Srinagar, January 12 Elsewhere, at least three militants were killed and two others injured in separate incidents in Kashmir valley since yesterday. The security forces also apprehended a suspected militant of the Al-Badr outfit and recovered one AK rifle, two magazines, 55 rounds and two hand grenades in a forest area of Dangiwacha in Baramula district. The police here said militants fired upon a police party near the Mattan chowk in Anantnag district at 2.45 p.m. today killing a constable, Abdul Rashid, and injuring 13 others. DSP Abdul Rouf was leading the party. Two militants of Al-Badr outfit were killed in an encounter with security forces at Tulkhan, Beijbehara in Anantnag district, yesterday. Two AK rifles, seven magazines, 111 rounds, two hand grenades, two wireless sets were recovered from the spot. A militant was killed in an encounter with the security forces at Surender, Bandipore in Baramula district yesterday. Some arms and ammunition were recovered from the site of the encounter, the police here said. JAMMU: A civilian was killed and four children and a sarpanch injured in separate incidents in Jammu and Kashmir where security personnel apprehended a Pakistani national and busted two militant hide-outs since Sunday, official sources said here on Monday. A group of three militants entered the house of a Gujjar, Mir Mohammad, at Dubri village in Udhampur district and abducted his son Lal Hussain, who was later killed in the forest area last night, the sources said, adding that the body was recovered on Monday. Another group of militants barged into the house of a sarpanch, Mohammad Iqbal Khan, at Naka Majari village in Poonch district on Sunday evening and opened indiscriminate firing injuring him seriously. Four children in the age group of eight to 14 years were injured in a blast at upper Shadra Sharief in Rajouri district when they were playing in a field. Security forces apprehended a Pakistani national, Anwar Massi of Agumunda of Shakargarh-Narwal area, Sialkot, from border area of Samba sector after he crossed over to this side on Sunday. Militants also set ablaze four houses of Gujjars at Malhan in Surankote area of Poonch district. Meanwhile, Army troops busted two militant hide-outs in Thanamandi and Surankote areas of Rajouri and Poonch districts early on Monday, the sources said. Arms and ammunition were recovered from the hide-outs, they added. |
Woman seeks 50 lakh as relief for son’s death
Srinagar, January 12 The petition will come up for hearing in February, district judge, Badgam, said in the order. The petitioner, Azinab, wife of Ghulam Muhammad Lone, resident of Daffpora, said her 16-year-old son Zahoor Ahmad Lone was taken away by a soldier of the RR35 while conducting searches in the area on October 4, 2003. During the search operation an encounter ensued between the soldiers and the militants, she said, and alleged that the soldiers used Zahoor as a human shield. Zahoor sustained injuries and later died in the hospital, she said. The officer on duty at the hospital confirmed death due to bullet injury in his report but the file was treated as closed by the police. However, the petitioner filed a suit demanding compensation.

Demonstration in protest against ‘arrest’ of 2 youths Srinagar, January 12 The protesters held the police and security forces responsible for the arrest and subsequent missing of the two youths in the area. One of the youth has been identified as Mohammad Shafi Guroo of Habbakadal locality. The demonstrators resorted stone throwing and the shops were closed in the area. The police and security forces officers who reached the spot assured the demonstrators that efforts would be made to find out the whereabouts of the two missing youths. The shops and business establishments, however, continued to remain closed in protest. |
Students’ tours flagged off Jammu, January 12 The children in the age group of 10 to 14 years hail from Kashmir and are inmates of the Gujjar and Bakkarwal hostels in Srinagar and Anantnag. The aim of the tour is to expose them to the diverse culture, traditions and lifestyle of the people of different regions. During their stay in Delhi these students will get an opportunity to witness Army Day and Republic Day parades. Lieut-Gen Hari Prasad, GOC-in-C of the Northern Command, met these children at Udhampur today before they left. SRINAGAR: The Inspector-General of the Border Security Force, Kashmir, Mr Vijay Raman, here on Monday flagged off a group of 40 youth drawn from distant areas of the valley for a “Bharat darshan” tour. A special function was organised at the Subsidiary Training Centre (STC) at Humahama near here where the group was flagged off. During their visit the youth would be meeting the President and Prime Minister after visiting Jammu, Chennai, Mahabalipuram, Pondicherry, Tanjore and Mysore. |
