Cycle polo juniors leave for Jaipur

Chandigarh, January 12
A seven-member UT junior cycle polo team today left for Jaipur to take part in the National Cycle Polo Championship to be held from January 14 to 18. Earlier the boys had a training camp at the DAV Senior Secondary school, Sector 8, under the guidance of Mr Vijay Jaiswal.

Mr Jagpal Singh, president of the Chandigarh Cycle Polo Association said in this meet, more than 25 teams were expected to take part. He said boys had done a rigorous workout and hoped to do well in this meet. He said this sport had always been the favourite of erstwhile rulers and was making a comeback to this part of the country.

On the coaching part, he said perfection tactics included free hitting while riding and hitting balls into the net. He said the association was doing a yeoman’s service of giving exposure to the players. He said the UT senior, junior and sub-junior girls cycle polo teams would take part in the National Cycle Polo Championship to be held in Puri (Orissa) in the first week of February.

The team is:Rohit Aswal (captain) and Vipan Kirar (Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 33), Mandeep and Rahul (Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 44), Mukesh (Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 46), Rajesh Joshi (Eagle Club) and Raj Kumar ( DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8).

Squad selected

A total of 24 basketball players and 24 kabaddi players have been selected to represent Chandigarh, in the National School Games to be held at Raipur, Chhatisgarh from January 15 to 19.

The team is: basketball under-17: boys: Reshab Gosain,Tarun Vats, Piyush Kant, Sahil Bhalla, Manik Sharma, Bhalinder Brar, Jorawar Singh, Sumeet Singh, Vivek Sharma, Avninder Singh, Amar Singh, Vikas Kumar, girls: Rekha Kothiyal, Meena, Sanchi Sharma, Pragati, Suman Chauhan, Neenakshi Rawat, Lata Negi,Ganimat Brah, Manpreet, Prinkpreet Kaur Sidhu, Nandani Atmaram, Pinky, kabaddi under 17: boys: Raj Kumar, Shiv Nath, Amit Kumar Rana, Karamjit Singh, Chandan Singh, Panu Ram, Gurcharan Varma, Devinder Singh, Ajay Rana, Top Bahadur, Ramesh Kumar, Sanjeev, girls: Tina Rana, Parminder Kaur, Kumari Reena, Sonia, Ritu Rana, Rinki Rana, Anjali, Monika, Manju, Sonu Devi and Aradhana, Mamta Kumari.

Bodybuilding meet

The Chandigarh Amateur bodybuilding Association will hold the 9th sub-junior and 12th junior Mr Chandigarh bodybuilding championship on January 18 at the DAV College Auditorium, Sector 10. According to Mr Sunil Walia, president of the association, the weighing in for the above championship will be held on January 17 at 3 pm at the association office in Sector 17.

The pre-judging and final posedown including the prize distribution will be held at the DAV College auditorium from 9 am. The weight categories are sub-junior: below 55kg, below 60 kg, below 65 kg, below 70 kg and above 70 kg. junior: below 55 kg, below 60 kg, below 65 kg, below 70 kg, below 75 kg and above 75 kg.

GMSSS-35 win

Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35, trounced St John’s High School, Sector 26, by 52 runs in the third tie of the ongoing PCA Parle inter-school under-17 cricket tournament at DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8. GMSSS-35 scored 288 for three in 45 overs. Sumit Dhiman remained unbeaten on 105 runs while Raj Angad scored an unbeaten 90. Kritarth claimed three wickets for 28 runs.

In reply, St John’s could score 236 for eight. Jasdeep scored 81 while Amrinder scored 55. Gaurav Gambhir bagged three wickets for 25 runs and Sidharth Sharma took two wickets for 25 runs.
