Vijay Kumar plays dream round
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, January 9
Vijay Kumar put behind his indifferent putting form to have a dream day and virtually sealed the fate of the Rs 10 lakh Hero Honda Open West Golf Tournament at the Poona Club Course on Friday. Vijay Kumar of Lucknow broke the existing course record of six-under 65, and was at 12-under 201 after three rounds.

That gave him a solid cushion of six strokes over second placed Ashok Kumar, while defending champion SSP Chowrasia was tied third along with early leaders Jaiveer Virk and Yusuf Ali at five-under 208. Digvijay Singh and Feroz Ali were one stroke behind, tied for the sixth place.

Vijay, who is yet to record a victory in eight starts this season, was in imperious form. His hitting was exemplary, and his putting immaculate. He had just one putt on each of the first five holes.

Vijay started with a birdie, and missed his only green in regulation on the second hole, where he made his up and down for par. He then birdied the third, fourth and fifth, before his birdie putt on the six slipped out. Another birdie on the seventh saw him kae the turn in five-under. On the back nine, he had several chances, but could convert only two—on the 10th and 14th.

INLD Govt puts VAT regime in perspective
Tribune News Service

Gurgaon, January 9
With the possibility of early Parliamentary elections in the air, which is to be followed by Assembly elections in the state, the INLD government is making efforts to come clean on its decision to implement the Value Added Tax (VAT) regime.

Talking to mediapersons today following his monthly meeting with the officers of the district, the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Anurag Rastogi, made out a strong case for implementation of VAT, which is being decried by large section of society.

He particularly roped in the personnel from the concerned department to convince that even after imposition of VAT regime it had not made much difference in the collection of the tax in Gurgaon district. The growth of tax has been 16 per cent since VAT was imposed in April 1, last year. This, in any case, would have happened given the growth in commercial activities in the district, Mr Rastogi said.

Ever since imposition of VAT, the business community has been opposing it on ground that the state should have waited till other states had opted for it. Mr Rastogi countered it saying that it was wrong trajectory of reasoning. Haryana has been showing the way to other states in several areas of its progressive policies. This is just no excuse that VAT should not be imposed here because other states have been dithering on the issue, he added.

He further said that VAT regime’s guidelines have been framed by the Centre. This was an exercise to simplify the taxing process. In Haryana, the regime has been opted just for that, and without any motive of grossing in more revenue. This could be amply demonstrated by the fact that tax revenue has not increased even under the new dispensation.

He maintained that in any case tax was collected from the manufacturing sector before coming of VAT. It is only the trading section, which has been brought under the ambit in VAT structure. He emphasised that there was no question of an honest being taxed or exploited. Launching into empirical proof on the virtues of VAT regime he said that it would be improper if any person goes to buy goods from any place outside Haryana simply because the rates were cheap there. It is to avoid such anomalies that the Centre has sought to bring about uniformity in tax structure throughout the country, he added.

Referring to another issue on which he dwelt upon at length by way of clarification was the administration’s move to modernise and develop the Shri Sheetla Mata Temple. He said that there was neither any move to tamper with the statute of the deity nor with the sanctum sanctorum. There was only plan to develop the outer circle of the temple and they would be given effect with the help of the concerned quarters.
