Cane farmer gets award
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, January 9
Mr Jasmail Singh, a farmer of Jagraon, was awarded at Singhawala village, near, here today for producing a maximum sugarcane yield per acre area in the state by adopting the ring-pit plantation method.

He obtained a record yield of 709.23 quintal per acre. The harvesting and yield data was taken by a team of scientists from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, and Sugarfed, Punjab, Chandigarh.

Presenting the award, Mr A.N. Singh Chauhan, Managing Director of Jagraon Sugar Mills, said the ring-pit system of plantation was started 25 years ago in UP but it was labour intensive. The scientists and agriculturists had doubts about it but results confirmed that it was a good method to produce a good yield.

Mr Chauhan said in this system local nutrients were provided in the root zone thus avoiding wastage. Only mother shoots were allowed to grow the maintain the same age of all plants/stalks resulting in uniform growth and sugar accumulation.

Since only about 30 per cent of land was utilised, it ensured proper use of water and nutrients and weeds were also controlled by trash mulching, which turned into organic manure.

Although, the yield obtained from a crop planted late was only 709-723 quintal per acre, a normal crop would be given an average production of 900 to 1100 quintal sugarcane per acre and a net profit of Rs 22,000 to 25,000 per acre, he said.

Mr Jasmail Singh said he could not devote much time as required by the system but he was happy to have achieved such high yield.

Shabad Gayan competition
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, January 9
Whatever we pursue, whatever we achieve; the world will always need the balancing forces of love, peace, truth, devotion and tolerance. In pursuit of materialistic excellence and so-called modernism, we seem to be distancing ourselves from these esteemed values and spiritual contentment. A sincere and constant effort is needed to nurture and reiterate these sustaining values in young hearts and souls.

A laudable endeavour in this direction was made when a shabad gayan competition was organised on the premises of Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, BRS Nagar, yesterday. Students participated with devotion and ardent zeal and mesmerised each and everyone present on the occasion. Their melodious recitals of Shabad filled the atmosphere with harmony and divinity.

Judges had a real tough time in selecting the winners. The participants were adjudged in two separate categories. From Classes VI and VII, the first prize was bagged by Tagore House. Harleen Kaur of Class VI and Sidak Singh of Class VII were the winners of the first position. Harsimran Singh of Class VII was second and Sukhmani Kaur secured the third position in this category.
