Sarpanches told about iodine deficiency
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, January 9
To prevent iodine deficiency disorders, the PGI’s Community Medicine Department today organised a meet for the sarpanches of the Raipur Rani block at the health centre there.

The Community Medicine Department has been undertaking a WHO-funded iodine deficiency disorder project in the Raipur Rani block. “The aim of this project is to educate the community to make use of only iodised salt so that many serious ailments and disorders can be prevented,” informed Dr Arun K. Aggarwal, Assistant Professor.

About 50 sarpanches from the block attended the day-long meeting where a team of doctors from the PGI, educated the villagers how to get their salt checked for iodine content. Survey undertaken by the PGI teams indicated that even now many villagers were consuming uniodised salt, as it was not available at the shops in their villages. Even if the people were aware of consuming only iodised salt, they did not know how to check if it had the required quantity of iodine.

The local MLA, Mr Pawan Diwan, was also present at the interaction with the sarpanches. While appreciating the doctors for rendering their services, Mr Diwan asked the people to make the best use of “Swasthiya Aap Ke Dwar” programme. Under this programme, doctors visit the villages every Wednesday and Friday and provide free consultations.

A film show was also organised to make the public understand the importance of consuming iodised salt. A demonstration of quick sample iodine testing in salt was also given on the occasion.
