Army Medical Corps anniversary celebrated

Meerut, January 1
Ten-day-long celebrations in connection with the 240th anniversary of Army Medical Corps ended here on Thursday. On the concluding day, a gala function was held in the Pagal Gymkhana Ground, where all officers, nursing officers, JCOs and other ranks civilian employees participated in various group activities and sports events.

The ceremony commenced with the unfurling of AMC flag by the Commandant, MH, Brigadier Surjit Singh, followed by a march past and fancy dress competitions.

Brig Singh wished all officers NOs JCOs, ORs and their families. The Commandant also hosted a Bara Khana for all ranks, where he and other senior officers held interaction with the soldiers and heard their grievances and directed the concerned officers for their speedy redressal.

Speaking to the NCR Tribune, Brigadier Singh said that MH, Meerut was one of the zonal hospital of AMC and had come a long way since independence. Keeping pace with advancement in the field of diagnostics and therapeutics and in medical technology, MH was capable of rendering services and care to serving and retired soldiers and their families. Laproscopic surgery was also started here recently, added Brig Singh.

He assured that MH, Meerut was always set for any contingency and ECHS helpline was available for relived soldiers.

The 240th AMC anniversary reminds us of the history of medical corps when on January 1, 1764, Bengal Presidency raised its regular establishment of military surgeons later Madras and Bombay presidency followed suit in 1767 and 1779 respectively. In the early 19th century, Indian medical services (IMS), Army hospitals corps and army bearers corps were raised.

Deadly bowling by Sabya Banerjee (3 for 22) and Arpit Upadhyay (3 for 23) helped Frank Anthony Public School defeat Guru Harkrishan Public School (GHPS), Vasant Kunj by five runs in the fifth R G Williams Memorial Under-15 Cricket Tournament at the Frank Anthony School ground.

Scores: Frank Anthony School: 142 all out in 34.5 overs (Sarthak Khatri 35, Vijay Pandit 36, Gurjeet Singh 3 for 18, Gurteg Singh 3 for 21).

GHPS: 137 all out in 32 overs (Dev Kant 33, Kanwar Jeet Singh 32, Sabya Banerjee 3 for 22, Arpit Upadhyay 3 for 23).

Madras Club win

Madras Club defeated Ministry of Health by 108 runs in an A-I Division match of the DDCA League at the Mohan Meakin ground.

Scores: Madras Club: 253 for 8 in 40 overs (Varun Sharma 75, Varun Sood 59, Puneet Bisth 35, Sunil Kumar 3 for 55).

Ministry of Health: 145 all out in 32 overs (Mohan Kumar 42, Gautam Sharma 4 for 21, Varun Singh 4 for 34).

In another match, Kishan Ganj defeated Daryaganj by six wickets in an A-I
Division League at the Yamuna ground.

Scores: Daryaganj: 144 all out in 32.3 overs (Jagdish Singh 44, Gaurav Malhotra 34, Mohinder Pal 5 for 13, Dinesh Yadav 3 for 25).

Kishan Ganj Gymkhana: 146 for 4 in 32.1 overs (Mrinal Saini 44 n o, Kapil Mehta 2 for 28).

Piyush Negi stars for Dogra Academy

An unbeaten knock of 90 by Piyush Negi propelled Sumit Dogra Academy to a 94-run victory against R P Malik Academy ins the fourth Shakuntala Devi Under-19 Cricket Tournament.

Scores: Dogra Academy: 296 for 5 in 40 overs (Piyush Negi 90, 12x4, 1x6; Mannu Kapoor 36, Arun Choudhary 36, Rachit Pathak 2 for 51).

R P Malik Academy: 202 for 9 in 40 overs (Ricky Kumar 38, Neeraj Sharma 36, Kunal Kapoor 36, Akhand Rathore 2 for 28, Mayank Sethi 2 for 32).

Bharat National School win

Bharat National Public School defeated Rohtak Road Gymkhana by nine wickets in the first Nehru Public School Under-15 Cricket Tournament at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

Scores: R R Gymkhana: 145 for 8 in 30 overs (Saurabh Pasi 50, Tarun Kumar 39, Saurabh Nischal 3 for 16, Dushyant Kumar 3 for 23).

Bharat National School: 146 for 1 in 28 overs (Gaurav Bhatia 70 n o, Sameer Khurana 55).

B L Kashyap lift cricket cup

New Delhi, January 1
Fine performances by Naresh Sidhu (2 for 13) and Monu Thaapa (35 n o off 13 balls) helped B L Kashyap and Sons defeat SG by five wickets in the third Turf Twenty20 Cup Cricket Tournament at the Guru Gobind Singh ground.

Put into bat, SG scored 123 for 9 in 20 overs. And in reply, B L Kashyap scored 124 for 5 in 18.2 overs. Naresh Sidhu and Vikram Kashyap were adjudged the man of the final and best batsman respectively while Mohit Sharma and Kanav Anand got the best bowler and man of the tournament award respectively.

Scores: SG: 123 for 5 in 20 overs (Abhishek Singh 25, Mohit Sharma 25, Rohit Chowdhary 25, Naresh Sidhu 2 for 13, Deep Singh 2 for 14).

Punjab Police struggle to win

Punjab Police scored a narrow 1-0 victory against Delhi XI in A Pool A match of the sixth Chatrapati Shivaji Hockey Tournament for the Dhyan Chand Cup at the Shivaji Stadium on Thursday.

Punjab Police had to strain hard for 52 minutes before they succeeded in piercing through the Delhi defence when Satwinder Singh converted a penalty corner.

Punjab and Sind Bank whipped Air-India 6-0 in another Pool A match. Rajwinder Singh (2), Baljeet, Parminder, Sharanjeet and Sanjeev were the goal-scorers. Indian Oil defeated Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) 4-2, after leading by 3-0 at half time.

Hamja Mustaba, Lakhwinder and Kamlesh got the goals in the first session. Hemram and Rajesh Kindo ran Indian Oil close in the second half when they scored for CRPF. But Kamlesh struck for a second time to widen the victory margin of Indian Oil.

Friday’s fixtures: Punjab and Sind Bank vs Delhi XI (1 pm); Punjab Police vs Air-India (2.30 p m)—Shivaji Stadium.

Vikram Dhariwal guides India to victory

A swashbuckling unbeaten 92, off 94 balls and studded with 10 boundaries, and a devastating bowling spell of 5 for 19 by Harvinder Singh enabled India beat West Indies by 228 runs in a Group A League match of the Commonwealth Under-19 Cricket Tournament at the K D Singh Babu Stadium in Lucknow.

Vikram Dhariwal and Narender (44 n o) put on 121 runs for the fifth wicket to give the Indian total solidity.

Scores: India: 283 for 4 in 50 overs (Vikram Dhariwal 92 n o, Narender 44 n o, Vipin Kumar 39, K Goel 36, Akash Deep 27).

Rakesh Shukla named Pondicherry coach
