With no let-up in the biting cold wave conditions, people in the north-west region braved icy winds today while dense fog continued to affect air, rail and road services.

Gulmarg and Sonmarg in Jammu and Kashmir and Patsio in Himachal Pradesh reported fresh spells of snowfall in the past 24 hours.

With visibility reduced to barely a few metres, Indian Airlines and Jet Airways flights were cancelled today, with little hope of their operating tomorrow.

Vehicular traffic moved at a snail’s pace till late in the afternoon while most of the Northern Railway trains ran 30 minutes to five hours behind schedule, reports from Jalandhar and Ambala said.

Chandigarh, after braving 1°C temperature, the lowest in seven years yesterday, shivered today as the day temperature dipped by nine degrees to 11.6°C. The minimum, however, rose to 4.4°C.

Ambala, 50 km from here, too, recorded a high of nine degrees below normal at 13.2°C. The minimum today was two degrees below normal at 5.3°C. Rohtak recorded a low of 3.9°C.

Amritsar continued to be the coldest place in the plains with the minimum temperature hovering around 2°C, two degrees below normal while the day temperature dropped by four degrees to 16.4°C.

Ludhiana reported a low of 2.4°C, four degrees below normal, and the maximum dipped by six degrees to 15°C.

In Srinagar, the minimum temperature dipped below freezing point at 1.4°C, while Jammu was colder by one degree at 7.3°C.

Shimla, however, saw the minimum today rising to 5.3°C, three degrees above normal, while the day temperature was four degrees above normal at 14.2°C. — UNI

Rainfall: Rain/snow has occurred at isolated places in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. Weather was dry in the rest of the region. Patsio (Himachal Pradesh) has recorded 7 cm of snowfall.

Temperatures: Past 24 hours change: Minimum temperatures fell in east Uttar Pradesh, rose markedly in Himachal Pradesh, rose in Jammu and Kashmir, west Rajasthan and Uttaranchal and changed a little elsewhere. Departure: They were appreciably below normal in Punjab, below normal in Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal and normal in the rest of the region. The lowest temperature in the plains was 1.6°C recorded at Adampur (Punjab).

Forecast valid until the morning of January 1: Rain or snow is likely at a few places in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir and at isolated places in Uttaranchal. Weather will be mainly dry in the rest of the region.

Forecast for Delhi and neighbourhood valid until the morning of January 1: Cold day with partly cloudy sky. Fog till forenoon. Minimum temperature will be around 4°C.

Farmers weather bulletin for Delhi forecast valid until the morning of January 1: Sky will be partly cloudy.

Outlook for the subsequent two days: No large change.
