Our Sports ReporterLudhiana, December 27
Neeraj Khera of Jalandhar garnered 6.5 out of seven points to emerge as the sole leader at the end of the seventh round on the penultimate day of the Punjab Open Chess Tournament being held at R.S. Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar, here today. Top seed Kanwarjeet Singh of Jalandhar tried his best to stop Neeraj in the seventh round and opened with white queen pawn but Neeraj responded with his own unorthodox style and chased the bishop of Kanwarjeet all over the board till he agreed to exchange it with a knight. Later, the game slowed down and ended in a king-pawn draw. Moti Lal of Patiala, Pardeep Arora of Amritsar and Sangat Rai won their respective matches to vie for the title with six points each, while R.B. Singh of the State Bank of Patiala, Arvinderpreet Singh of Ludhiana, Chetan Bansal of Moga, Mukesh Kumar and Harinderjit Singh were just a half point behind with 5.5 points each.
