Khanna, Hoshiarpur schools enter last four

Ludhiana, December 27
A.S. Senior Secondary School, Khanna, along with Government High School, Chabbewal (Hoshiarpur), and Government High School, Khasi Kalan, won their respective quarterfinal matches to advance into the last four stage on the second day of the first Punjab Schools Football Tournament being organised by the Sutlej Club at the Government Model Senior Secondary School ground of Punjab Agricultural University here today. Hosts, PAU school have got bye and are already through to the semi-finals.

In the first quarterfinal, Government High School, Chabbewal, overwhelmed Government High School, Rurka Kalan, Jalandhar, 5-0 after establishing 3-0 lead at the breather. In the first half, Paramjit Singh put his team ahead in the fifth minute of the match. Karanpreet Singh increased the lead in the 15th minute. In the 25th minute Vicky netted the ball to read it 3-0.

After chaning ends, Chabbewal lads consolidated the lead in the 43rd minute and Paramjit scored his second goal in the 60th minute to round off the tally 5-0.

In the second quarterfinal, Government High School, Khasi Kalan, prevailed over Government Model Senior Secondary School, PAU ‘B’, 1-0 to secure a berth in the semi-final.

The third quarterfinal played between A.S. Senior Secondary School, Khanna, and Government High School, Thalla, turned out to be a well contested affair in which the former ultimately came out victorious 4-2. The issue was resolved via a tie breaker.

For the winners, the scorers were Jaspal Singh, Amandeep Singh, Amarinder Singh and Kuljinder Singh while for Thalla school, Iqbal Singh and Surinder found the target.

On the penultimate day of the tournament, Lala Lajpat Rai, Member of Rajya Sabha, Mr Gurpreet Singh, SP (Detective), and Mr Sohan Singh, Assistant Education Officer, were the chief guests.

Kirti, Amandeep declared best athletes

Kirti Sharma and Amandeep were declared best athletes among girls and boys (u-14 years), respectively, in the 8th annual athletics meet of Bharatiya Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Udham Singh Nagar, which concluded at its Kitchlu Nagar branch grounds here today. Kirti Sharma won three titles (100m race, 200m race and long jump) and Amandeep too bagged three titles (400m, 600m races and discus throw). Jagdish Chander Sadan and Ram Tirath Sadan were named the best houses in the u-14 years and u-19 years group, respectively.

Results: Girls (u-19)— 800m- Priya Bawa 1, Noleena 2, Sakshi 3; 200m- Priya Bawa 1, Manisha 2, Isha 3; three-legged race- Surbhi and Niketa 1, Charan and Smriti 2, Vandana and Priyanka 3; thread and needle race- Vagisha 1, Tenika 2, Charu 3; 400m- Priya Bawa 1, Charu 2, Noleena 3.

Girls (u-14) — shot put- Kamaldeep 1, Tanvi 2, Meenu 3; discus throw- Kamaldeep 1, Isha 2, Parul 3; skipping- Jaspreet 1, Pratibha 2, Radhika 3; three-legged race- Kanika Batra and Pratibha 1, Reetika and Taranjit 2, Chandni and Pallavi 3; thread and needle race- Pratibha 1, Pallavi 2, Ankita 3; sack race- Aditi 1, Diksha 2, Shikha 3; flat race- Manpreet Kaur 1, Diksha 2, Shagun 3; spoon potato race- Ravina 1, Anisha 2, Harleen 3; and coin search race- Tulsi Sood 1, Simran Rana 2, Gunjan Rawat 3.

Neeraj Khera leads in chess

Ludhiana, December 27
Neeraj Khera of Jalandhar garnered 6.5 out of seven points to emerge as the sole leader at the end of the seventh round on the penultimate day of the Punjab Open Chess Tournament being held at R.S. Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar, here today.

Top seed Kanwarjeet Singh of Jalandhar tried his best to stop Neeraj in the seventh round and opened with white queen pawn but Neeraj responded with his own unorthodox style and chased the bishop of Kanwarjeet all over the board till he agreed to exchange it with a knight. Later, the game slowed down and ended in a king-pawn draw.

Moti Lal of Patiala, Pardeep Arora of Amritsar and Sangat Rai won their respective matches to vie for the title with six points each, while R.B. Singh of the State Bank of Patiala, Arvinderpreet Singh of Ludhiana, Chetan Bansal of Moga, Mukesh Kumar and Harinderjit Singh were just a half point behind with 5.5 points each.

Hockey tournament begins

Doraha, December 27
The first All India Gold Cup Hockey Tournament, organised by the Doraha Hawks Club (regd), was inaugurated by Mr Chander Shekhar, IG, PAP, Jalandhar, yesterday.

The first match was played between PAP Academy, Jalandhar, and Delhi University, Delhi . The match was won by PAP Academy 2-1. The goal scorers of PAP were Jasvir Singh and Sharanjit Singh. In the second match, Guru Nanak Academy, Doraha, won 2-1, beating Border Hawks Amritsar. The third match was won by Speed Academy from Sukhchain Academy Faridkot 3-1.

Ropar Hawks won the match 3-1, beating GNN Academy Doraha and Air India Delhi won the match, beating Speed Academy, Ludhiana.
