Our Correspondent

Mandi Ahmedgarh, December 18
Babaljit Kaur will head the Punjab sub-junior volleyball team at the National Volleyball Championship scheduled to be held in Kerala early next year. All six players are students of Government Senior Secondary School, Maherna Kalan, and belong to Johlan village, near Raekote in Ludhiana District.

The best smasher of the state (2001), Babaljit Kaur, along with other team members, had to shift to this school after the death of her coach Dilbara Singh Johlan. Though she started her sports career with athletics, she continued her pursuit in volleyball. She played in the state under-14 team three times and captained the Punjab team at Anandpur Sahib in 2000. The Volleyball Federation declared her the best smasher of the state in Jalandhar in 2001. She has played eight times in state team.

Commenting on the state of sports in schools, Babaljit said,” Little attention is paid to sports in schools. I remember, we were not even supplied kits at Rewa in 1997.”

The other members of the team are Sandeep Kaur Sandhu, Sandeep Kaur, Charanjit Kaur, Amandeep and Amrit Paul.
