Advances in brain tumour surgery discussed

Chandigarh, December 15
The 52nd annual four-day conference of the neurological Society of India organised by the PGI’s Department of Neurology from December 12 concluded here today. Over a 1000 delegates participated in the conference. Which was held in the PGI after 15 years.

In the medical neurology session, discussion took place on epilepsy, stroke and infections, besides critical care in neurology, movement disorders and headache.

Aspects of molecular genetics were also covered in a symposium on stem cells. A distinguished panel of national and international speakers participated in different sessions. Apart from these sessions, research papers were presented on various topics of neurosciences.

Speakers from Japan, Europe and the USA deliberated on vascular diseases and on highly sophisticated operations on skull-based tumours. Brainstorming sessions on quality management of head injury were also held. Advances in technology for operating small deep-seated brain tumours were highlighted.

Discussions on vascular surgical brain hemorrhage and brain stroke were also held. The Neurosurgical Department at the PGI has been operating at least 200 patients every year. A section has been marked for award papers with the Neurological Society of India giving awards to youngsters who have produced quality scientific work.

Various methodologies of ultrafast diagnosis and immediate treatment within the first hour of head trauma, too, were discussed. A full session of two hours was dedicated to the management of different causes of brain tumors and current advances in this regard.

ICMR awards for 2 PGI docs

Chandigarh, December 15
Two PGI doctors, Prof S. Majumdar and Dr Sanjay Jain, have received the prestigious Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Basanti Devi Amir Chand prize and the Shakuntla Amir Chand prize, respectively. The awards are the two oldest awards of the ICMR instituted in 1953 by late Major-Gen Amir Chand for significant research contributions by scientists in biomedical sciences.

According to a press note issued by PGI, the prize for 2002 will be presented to Prof S. Majumdar, Head, Department of Experimental Medicine and Biotechnology for his research work on ‘Molecular basis of pathogenesis of disease process’. The 2001 Shakuntala Amir Chand Prize will be presented to Dr Sanjay Jain, associate professor, Department of Internal Medicine for his research work on “Takayasus arthritis” mysterious disease.

DAV, MCM shuttlers reach finals

Shuttlers of DAV College, Sector 10, and the MCM DAV College for Women, Sector 36, sailed in the finals of the Panjab University inter-college badminton tournament played here at the PU gymnasium hall.

In the boys’ semi-final, DAV College got the better of Government College, Ludhiana 3-0, while GGDSD College, Sector 32, prevailed upon Panjab University, Chandigarh, 3-2.

In the women semi-finals, MCM DAV-36 eves downed the SD College for Women, Moga, 2-0 while PU campus girls defeated the Khalsa College for Women, Ludhiana, 2-0.

Men (semi-finals) — DAVC-10 b GC, Ludhiana, 3-0 (Gurjeet Singh b Mandeep Singh 15-0,15-0; Peeyush Aggarwal b Ranbir Singh 15-08, 15-10; Gurjeet and Akash Sethi b Ranbir and Mandeep 15-0,15-1); GGDSD-32 b PU Campus 3-2 (Pankaj b Vikrant Chaudhary 15-05,15-01; Sachin Garg lost to Deepa Sidhu 6-15, 6-15; Pankaj and Sachin b Puneet and Deepak 13-15, 15-13, 15-09; Robin lost to Puneet 15-9, 5-15,15-17; Paras Gupta and Robin beat Vikrant and Vivek Varmani 15-0,15-6.

Volleyball tourney

Spikers of Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, today made it to the final of the third CBSE national volleyball championship, played at DAV Public School, Faridabad.

As per information reaching here, SPS-41 players outplayed Shah Satnamji Public School, Sirsa, 3-1. The first set went in the favour of SPS-41 boys, who won 25-20 but lost in the second set 22-25. In the next two sets, Shivalik school boys combined well to demolish Sirsa players 25-21, 25-22 and have a clash with hosts DAV Public School, Faridabad, in the tomorrow’s final.

In the second semi-final, host DAV Public School, Faridabad, defeated St John’s Senior Secondary School, Meerut, in a keenly contested tie with 3-1 score.

Cricket tourney

Punjab Financial Corporation XI defeated Canara Bank by 30 runs in the Canara Bank cup institutional cricket tournament, played here at the Sector 3 cricket stadium, Panchkula.

In another match of the day, the Mount Cable Club beat HDFC Bank by eight wickets while the Harmukh Kashmiri Club got the better of the Kashur Club by 14 runs.

Observer nominated

The Indian Amateur Boxing Federation has nominated Prof C.K. Jerath, Secretary of the Chandigarh Amateur Boxing Association, as observer for the 19th national sub-junior boxing championship to be held at Haldwani (Nainital) from December 22 to 27.

Chetanpreet, Sabeeha bring glory to Punjab

Chandigarh, December 15
Two city-based shooters, Chetanpreet and Sabeeha Dhillon, helped Punjab in winning the coveted gold medal in the National Shooting Championship in progress at Hyderabad. Both Chetan and Sabeeha gave splendid performance in their event 10-metre Air Rifle by scoring 392/400 and 387/400, respectively in the final held yesterday. Punjab won the gold medal in the team championship followed by Maharashtra and Chandigarh team got the third place.

Both, though studying and residing at Chandigarh, had opted to represent Punjab in the past few years for better exposure. Despite a tough competition from the ace shooters, they helped by another team mate Navdeep Dhillon who shot 389/400, brought glory to the state.

Both the shooters were also hopeful of their making it to the National Masters’ shooting finals where only the top six shooters in both senior and junior categories will take part. This meet will be organised by the National Rifle Association of India in near future.

Cultural programme marks annual function

Zirakpur, December 15
A cultural programme marked the annual day function of the local AC National Public Senior Secondary School, organised on Saturday.

Enthusiastic students participated in various events like shabad gayan, vandana, action poems, patriotic songs, skits and plays organised on the occasion. Modern Ramayana, fancy dress show, giddha and bhangara presented by the students were appreciated.

Dr Kehar Singh, Chairman of the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB), who was the chief guest applauded the participants for their confidence.

Those who were present on the occasion include Mrs Narinder Kaur, Controller, Examination, (PSEB), Mrs Veena Dada OSD, PSEB, and Mr Narinder Sharma, president of the Zirakpur Nagar Panchayat.

Earlier, school principal read out the annual report and highlighted the school achievements.
