Coalition partners to turn the heat on
Mufti Jammu, December 9 The session will be a fiery one as the National Conference (NC), which is the main opposition and the single largest party in the House, has this time armed itself with much ammunition to whip the coalition government. Succumbing to the criticism of the opposition regarding the week long session during which only five sittings of the Assembly will be held, the government is learnt to have principally decided to extend the sittings by two days. The session will now be stretched till December 18. This would be possible only when the House approves the business tomorrow. Sensing the aggressive mood of some members of his coalition, the Mufti tonight hosted a dinner for all the legislators of the parties supporting his government. He is expected to make efforts to mellow them down so that the government escapes an embarrassing situation on the floor of the Assembly. However, the Panthers Party of Mr Bhim Singh, which is a constituent in the coalition is determined to put the Mufti on the mat on the issue of “discrimination” against Jammu. Certain legislators of the party are planning to demonstrate on the issue of termination of 32 employees of the agriculture department. Mr Balwant Singh Mankotia, an MLA of the party, today said that all these 32 persons belonged to Jammu. On the other hand, the state government has reinstated 251 employees belonging to Kashmir, he alleged. The BJP and the BSP are also expected to stand with them on the issue of discrimination. During the last Budget session also the Panthers Party had put the government in a dock by raising various issues of alleged discrimination with Jammu. This provoked the Deputy Chief Minister, Mr Mangat Ram Sharma, who shouted at the Panther Party MLAs and asked them to either “behave” or quit the coalition. Certain members of the Congress and the Panthers Party are likely to pin the government on the delay in implementation of the Wazir Commission report and delimitation of the constituencies to give Jammu its due share in the Assembly. The National Conference was already waiting for an opportunity to attack the Mufti on the issue of takeover of the Muslim Auqaf Trust and the medical institute at Srinagar that were controlled by the Abdullahs. Mr Abdul Rahim Rather, who was the Finance Minister during the National Conference regime, and other legislators of the party are likely to take the government to task for so far incurring an expenditure of only Rs 1221 crore during the year against Rs 1890 crore received from the Centre on various accounts during the current financial year. Discontent is also brewing among certain independents who are supporting the Mufti government, but are neither given a ministerial berth nor given any position during the recent appointment of chairpersons of boards and corporations. |

APHC (Abbas) leaders in Delhi to meet
Wisner Jammu, December 9 Three senior Hurriyat leaders, Prof Abdul Gani Bhat, Molvi Umar Farooq and Mr Bilal Ahmed Lone, have been camping in New Delhi for the past four days meeting diplomats in various embassies. The Hurriyat team is scheduled to meet members of an American delegation led by Mr Frank Wisner, former US Ambassador in New Delhi, who are on a visit to India. Molvi Abbas Ansari,Chairman of the APHC, told this correspondent, “My men have gone to Delhi to keep the channels of discussion open so that our friends help us in finding an amicable settlement of the Kashmir issue.” In reply to a question, he said, “We have to move forward as far as the talks with New Delhi are concerned and we cannot spent our time only bringing about a reconciliation with Mr Geelani.” He made it clear that the attempts at bringing about unity among the separatists “were still on.” The APHC sources said the three-member team of the APHC(Abbas) had gone to New Delhi to show that theirs was a genuine separatist conglomerate and was interested in the settlement of the Kashmir issue through negotiations. Though agencies across the border have reversed their stand and are keen to unite the two factions of the APHC, the establishment in Pakistan besides militant groups that matter in Kashmir continue to patronise the faction led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani. It is in this context that the leaders of the Abbas faction were trying to score a point over Mr Geelani by interacting with diplomats and foreign delegations in the capacity of “Kashmiris’ representatives.” However, it is believed that so long as the establishment in Pakistan and militant groups continue to lend support to Mr Geelani, he will have his say in the political affairs in Kashmir. |
