‘Health at Your Doorstep’ takes off

Panchkula, December 7
The state government's ambitious Health at Your Doorstep programme was launched today with the holding of health camps at various places here.

Under this programme, free multi-speciality medical camps are organised to provide efficient medicare to the masses near their place of living.

As many as 200 patients were given free consultation and medicines at a camp organised in Mansa Devi Complex, Sector 5, in association with the Forum For Common Cause.

Dr B.S. Dahiya, Director-General, Health Services, Haryana, presided over the function. The President of the municipal council, Ms Seema Chaudhary, was the chief guest.

A team of doctors from General Hospital examined the patients. Civil Surgeon Satvir Chaudhary explained in depth the activities of the Health Department and the purpose of such camps. Mr Deepak Rai Walia, president of the Forum for Common Cause, said that owing to excessive cost of treatment, the poor could not go to the hospitals, hence these camps prove effective.

In Industrial Area, Phase I, a free eye screening camp was organised in association with Rotary Club, Chandigarh, Himalayan Ranges. Nearly 100 patients were examined free of cost and 17 were referred for cataract operation, informed Mr Rajesh Bajaj, club secretary. Medicines were also distributed free. The club president, Mr Anil Oberoi, spoke about the new projects.

Similar health camps were also organised by the Health Department at the government dispensaries in MDC 4, Sector 8 and Sector 4 and Gauri Shankar Mandir in Sector 17.

Health camps by Red Cross

Chandigarh, December 7
The UT Red Cross today organised health camps at Government Model High School, Sector 26, and Primary Health Centre, Mani Majra. At least 1000 children and other patients were reportedly checked up at these camps and were given medicines free of cost.

The Deputy Commissioner Mr Arun Kumar, visited the camps and interacted with the public.

SAI (Red), PU club win basketball titles

Chandigarh, December 7
SAI (Red) and PU club emerged winners in the women’s and men’s section of the Chandigarh State Basketball meet held today. In the women’s final, SAI (Red) outplayed PU campus 41-25 with half time score of 19-07. Sapna scored 15 points, Gurjeet 12 points for the winners. In men’s final, PU club defeated SGGS College, Sector 26 at 82-73. The half time score read at 39-29. Harveer with 18 points was the top scorer while Ankur Sharma netted 16 points for the winners. Umesh scored 27 points for losers. Mr Kewal Singh, Assistant Director, PU was the chief guest and gave away the prizes.

Sports day

Dutt Vishesh School, Sector 26 organised its annual sports day last evening in the school premises. The programme began with an impressive march past honouring the guest of honour, Brig DS Dhillon, Deputy Director General, NCC, Punjab and Haryana. The races held included lemon and spoon race, baloon race, three legged race, killing the demon race,100 metre, 200 metre, junior and seniors 4x100 metre relay race.

Ms Indu Punj, president of Vishesh Educational Society, presented Mr and Mrs SNP Punj trophy to the best house in sports to Raman House. Ms Sharda Dutt, chairperson of the society presented the Founders Trophy of Mr K Dutt and Ms S Dutt to Newton House for the best all round house. The show concluded with a scintillating torch light tattoo performed by children in the dark night embodying the school motto” With love towards light’.

Scooter rallyists pass through city

Chandigarh, December 7
Four riders on Kinetic Nova today crossed the city as part of the rally on their way from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. These riders, Bhardwaj Jadhav, Rishikesh Kolapar, Kiran Chitnis and Harshan Bakar began their long ride on December 5 and expected to reach Kanyakumari on December 18 to prove endurance and fuel efficiency.

The rally, organised by a team of students from Pune, will cover a total distance of 3,156 km across the length of India in 14 days. Kinetic expects that the rally will find a place in the Limca Book of Records.

Mr Dilip Bam renowned auto journalist is also accompanying the riders through their journey to provide independent assessment of the rally results. The journey began at Patnitop in Jammu and Kashmir and will pass through Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Bhangu declared best athlete

Nishchaijit Singh Bhangu, a Class VI student of St John’s High School, Sector 26, with his multifarious sports achievement won accolades by being adjudged the best athlete award in the annual athletic meet of the school held last evening on the school premises. Nischaijit who is yet to complete 12 years, got gold medal in cycle race, 200 metres race and silver medal each in the long jump and High Jump event.

He also won bronze medal in cricket ball throw. Earlier in the inter school football meet, he was declared the best striker. He want to scale dizzy heights in football and also want to prove his worth in hockey since his parents are the hockey coaches. He said in the north zone folk song competition held in the 9-14 year category, he secured first prize. Nishchaijit is indebted to his parents, both sports coaches and his school Principal for giving valuable guidance to grow ahead in sports career.

Vinod Suri installed Grand Master

Vinod Suri was installed Grand Master (GM) for a term of three years by Most Worshipful (MW) Dr Pritam Singh Egan at the annual meeting of the Grand Lodge of Upper India held here on Saturday night.

The meeting was attended by MW O.N. Kapoor, Grand Master of Eastern India, MW K. Algiriswamy, former GM of South India, MW Ajit Singh Ranauta, MW Dr N. Vashishta, Founder Grand Master of Upper India, and many brethren from all over India.

Ritual competition trophy was won by Lodge Chandigarh No. 1. Very Worshipful (VW) Col. S.S. Dhanoa was presented 25 years Long-Term Service Jewel for service to Freemasonry.

Freemasonry is the most ancient and honourable institution. Belief in God is an essential prerequisite to become a freemason.

Nitin wins chess championship

Nitin cornered glory in the Chandigarh Youth Chess championship which concluded at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Sector 25, here today. Mandeep was second and Rahul Singh was third with five points.

Meanwhile according to Mr Vipnesh Bhardwaj, Secretary of the association, the Chandigarh Chess Association had selected Nitin and Mandeep for the national chess championship to be held at Patna from December 22. Rahul Singh would be the reserve player. CM Sharma, distributed prizes.

The point positions at the end of the last round; Nitin, Mandeep, Rahul (5 points each); Anmol Razdan, Manpreet (4.5 points each); Shweta, Jaskaranjeet Singh, Simranjeet, Kapil Dev (4 points each).

Women demonstrate flair for driving

Chandigarh, December 7
The fourth Maruti Suzuki Women Power Drive Contest was held here today. As many as 150 women car drivers participated in the contest that was organised in collaboration with the Chandigarh Motor Sports Association.

Ms Harvinder Khetal, a resident of Sector 44, won the first prize in the contest, which carried a reward of Rs 10,000. Other winners in the individual category were Swati Sharma and Poonam Gulia.

In the family category, Arushi, Preeti Rajpal and Dr Simi were declared winners.

Earlier, the participants were given a list of traffic rules and were asked to drive their cars following them. The average speed of the cars was between 20 and 40 kmph. The rally, which started from Lake Club, passed through various sectors of the city, including 8, 9 and 10, and covered 71 km. Participants had come with their family members.

Mr Hardeep Singh Brar, Regional Manager, Maruti, said, “The basic idea of the contest was to promote better driving skills and to honour our esteemed women drivers who now constitute a significant share of our clientele. We want to create awareness about traffic rules.” The rally, which began at 1 pm, continued till 8 pm.
