Indian bowlers, batsmen falter again
Brisbane, November 29 The ragged Indian bowling attack once again let a batting reputation grow at their expense and their batsmen did little better in the seven possible overs to crumble to 17 for 3 at close against Queensland Academy of Sports XI. Lee Carseldine, playing his first game of the season after recovering from a knee injury, smashed a brilliant century as the home team cheekily declared at 304 for 6, half an hour before close of play. The hosts backed their decision sensationally, removing Indian openers and wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta in the space of seven balls. Scott Bryant, a left-arm paceman of Zimbabwe-origin, removed Akash Chopra and Deep Dasgupta off successive deliveries in his second over though the Indian stumper was unlucky as he had played fully stretched forward. India suffered another blow at the other end when Virender Sehwag (6) edged a flick down the legside off Joe Dawes for wicketkeeper Chris Hartley to complete a very good catch. Earlier, the Indians misfielded, overthrew and dropped catches and perhaps the only thing in their defence was they kept an attacking field throughout with no fielder in the deep. Anil Kumble picked up four wickets but neither he nor any other Indian bowler looked particularly threatening on a placid pitch with short boundaries and fast outfield. Carsledine walked in to bat in the second over of the day and stayed till well after tea break when he was smartly caught by Dasgupta who kept brilliantly against both pacers and spinners. Dasgupta showed his concentration was still good at the fag end of a hot day when he made a difficult stumping look easy against Craig Philipson who at 85 was looking good to be the second centurion of the day for the hosts. Philipson made 85 in 161 minutes from 138 deliveries with 12 fours and a towering six off Kumble when he came down the track and lifted the leg-spinner right to the sightscreen.

Indian SOS to psychologist Gordon Brisbane, November 29 The Indian team management today confirmed that the message has gone around to Gordon to arrive in Brisbane on Monday where he is expected to have at least two sessions with the team — most likely on Monday and Wednesday — before the Test match. The team management has also deferred the selection of the "Team Theme" till they catch-up with Gordon after failing to arrive at any consensus in at least one meeting on the issue on the tour so far. Indians have had a disastrous lead-up to the first Test, having conceded over 800 runs in two unfinished innings to the opponents and few runs to key players like Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag. As their worst nightmares on the present tour are beginning to get real, the visitors have sought to plug the leaks in their unit by seeking assistance on two fronts in the last one week.

Davis Cup: Aussies take 2-1 lead
Melbourne, November 29 Before Saturday’s match, Australian officials played the current Spanish national anthem, trying to reverse an embarrassing gaffe at the opening ceremony that saw an outdated one played. On Friday, Spanish officials were furious in the stands while the old version was played by a lone trumpeter _ Australian jazz legend James Morrison. They later demanded and received an apology from Australian officials, who admitted they gave Morrison the wrong anthem to learn. On Saturday, the Spanish players stood quietly while the current anthem was played without incident. Minutes later, Corretja had his service broken for the first time and the Australian rout was on, giving the capacity crowd of just under 15,000 only 82 minutes of tennis. The title will be decided on Sunday when Mark Philippoussis takes on Juan Carlos Ferrero in the first reverse singles, followed by Lleyton Hewitt’s match with Carlos Moya. Hewitt gave Australia a 1-0 lead with a five-set win Friday over Ferrero while Moya beat Philippoussis in four sets to level the final after the first day. Arthurs and Woodbridge, playing in their sixth Davis Cup match, broke veteran Corretja’s serve fourth game of the opening set to go up 3-1. Lopez, playing in his first Davis Cup match, had only played one previous doubles match with Corretja. — AP |

Indian Oil beat Pakistan club New Delhi, November 29 Prabhjot Singh opened the scoring in the second minute of the match when he converted a penalty stroke. He slotted in a field goal five minutes later and added the third goal in the 59th minute. But he was denied a hat-trick by Rajpal Singh who scored the third goal in the 40th minute. The visitors pulled off their second goal after the Oilmen had taken a comfortable 4-1 lead when Rizwan Bhatt found the mark at the fag end. The Pakistan club put tremendous pressure on the Oil defence, but the Indian club put up a stout defence to baulk 10 penalty corners and one penalty stroke. Prabhjot was declared 'man of the match' for his brilliant display. It was a sudden slump in the fortune of the Pakistan team as they had begun in style, sinking Indian Navy by five goals to one in their opening match yesterday. In the other matches, Air-India outplayed Indian Navy 4-2 while Indian Airlines defeated Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd 2-0. Airlines got their goals just before half time and a minute into the second session through Girish Pimpale and Arjun Halappa respectively.

World class field for
FIA-Asia Pacific Rally New Delhi, November 29 MRF General Manager A. Rodricks said here today that the entry list for the APRC round boasted of the best in the region, including Malaysia’s Karamjit Singh with Allen Oh as co-driver, the 2002 World Rally Championship winner in production car class, and also the 2002 APRC title winner. The Indian interest in the event will revolve around the two Team MRF Tyres entries of Armin Kremer with Fred Berssen of Germany as co-driver and David Doppelreiter of Austria with Ola Floene of Norway as co-driver. Kremer, three times German champion and winner of the 2001 European Championship, is in a strong position to bid for both the overall and group N titles that would give MRF the honour of being the first Indian firm to achieve this feat with home-developed tyres. Mr Rodricks said the competition would be at its stiffest as witnessed in the previous four rounds of the APRC held in Canberra (Australia), Rotorua (New Zealand), Hokkaido (Japan) and Rayong (Thailand). Australia and New Zealand, which enjoy an enviable track record of producing world class rally drivers, will have strong representation at Pune. Meanwhile, moves are afoot to bring an Indian Rally Championship next year. Plans are also on the anvil to make north India, Chandigarh and Delhi in particular, the hub of go-carting and other motor sports events as most of the top motorsport practitioners hail from this region. However, motor sport, strangely, does not have a ‘home ground’ in north India and this lacuna too will be tackled. |
Vasco, Haywards split points in NFL Margao, November 29 Vasco took the lead in the eighth minute through a penalty by Brazilian recruit Edson T De Castro after Amaechi Tochukwu was tripped inside the box by Sporting defender Akshay Das. A few minutes later, Vasco had a chance to increase the lead but Tochukwu from inside the box hit the post off a pass from Cabral. Sporting drew parity two minutes before half time when Bibiano Fernandes’ 35-yards shot beat keeper Ramos all ends. Earlier, Francis Andrade who initiated most of Sporting moves saw his shot going inches over the bar. After change of ends, Sporting who played an organised game in the midfield pressed hard and took the lead in the 83rd minute when Louis Aniweta's header was bang on target off a flag kick taken by Andrade from the right. Vasco, then pressed hard for the equaliser and restored parity five minutes before the final time. Sushant Mathew who broke free on the right after he was fed by a long pass by defender Agnelo Colaco send a measured cross to Kamal Thapa who sent a powerful header to the far end of the net. — PTI |
