CBSE schools to have mathematics labs
Deepkamal Kaur

Ludhiana, November 29
To help the students comprehend various concepts of mathematics well, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has directed all schools to set up laboratories for the subject.

This was stated by Mr G. Balasubramanian, Director, Academics, CBSE, who was here during the prize distribution function of the 12th Ludhiana Sahodaya School Athletic Meet at GGN Public School, Civil Lines, today. The director said it was being felt that the students were getting only a bookish knowledge of the subject and their concepts were not very clear for practical purposes.

Therefore, Mr Balasubramanian said, the board had directed all schools to have a mathematics laboratory for their students from Class III onwards. He said the board had even sent complete information to all schools regarding the various kinds of equipment that was necessary for the purpose.

The director said he had told the schools that they could tell their mathematics teachers to develop their own teaching aids with simple material using charts, thermocol or even wooden boards. He said commonly used objects of different shapes could even be collected in the laboratory and the students asked to measure their surface area or volume. This, he said, was being stressed so that schools did not feel pressurised for investing much for the purpose.

Mr Balasubramanian said the board was making efforts to revise the curriculum of all the classes. He said 10 per cent obsolete syllabus of each class was being deleted and replaced with more relevant material on the subject. He said the process had already begun and the syllabi of subjects like biology, physics, business studies, economics and accountancy had already been revised for the higher classes.

Regarding low acceptability of the new courses such as entrepreneurship, biotechnology, and web and multimedia designing, the board director said all such subjects were being introduced in a phased manner as these were still in their experimental stage. He said 100 schools had been permitted to start these courses for one session and next year another 100 schools would be allowed to introduce these courses.

Under the United Nations Development Project (UNDP), Mr Balasubramanian said, a new supplementary book on disaster management had been added to the curriculum of social sciences for Class VIII this year. He said from the coming session, the book would also be introduced for Class IX students. He said life skills had been introduced as a new subject for Class VI students in the current session and from the coming session, the book would be introduced for Class VII as well.

Regarding the concept of no school bags introduced for Classes I and II, the board director said this was being done so that students did not carry a heavy load of books to the school. He said ideally the students of such lower classes should be given the liberty to play after the school hours and not do home work. They could even pass their time at home by learning things like table manners, painting something from their imagination or may be some other creative work, he added.

Mr Balasubramanian said the board had floated a new idea that students till Class V should not be evaluated on the basis of their examination.

He said like the no school bags concept, this was again one option and the schools were not getting any strict regulations based on the concepts. He, however, added that the movement was spreading in a big way and the acceptability of the novel concepts was high.

Regarding the grading system to be started by the board, he said the deliberations were still on. He said its implementation was not possible till all boards followed its pursuit as it led to problems at the time of admission to colleges. Regarding the students taking biotechnology, he said students preparing for the Pre-Medical Test

(PMT) could only use it as their fourth subject for it could not replace any of the three subjects, including physics, chemistry and biology, necessary for the entrance test. He said the Medical Council of India was not accepting the idea to replace biology with bitechnology.
