VHP flays offer to talk with separatists
Tribune News Service

Jammu, November 29
The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has said the talks between the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr L.K. Advani, and the separatists would weaken the links between Jammu and Kashmir and the rest of the country.

Dr Ramakant Dubey, president of the state unit of the VHP, told mediapersons here today that the instrument of accession signed by Maharaja Hari Singh in 1947 leaves no doubt that Kashmir was an integral part of India. Why should the Centre accept the demand of a handful of separatists and reopen the issue again and again.

He said nothing had come out of the reports of nearly half a dozen committees appointed by the Centre from time to time to hold parleys with Kashmiri leaders on the issue. Nothing concrete has come out of the talks between Parthasarthi — Beig, Indira Gandhi — Sheikh Abdullah and Rajiv Gandhi and Farooq Abdullah and the committees headed by Mr K.C. Pant, Mr N.N. Vohra and Mr Ram Jethmalani.

He said Mr Advani should also talk to people of various sections of society in Jammu and Ladakh instead of confining his dialogue only to the separatists. The 3.50 lakh displaced Kashmiri Pandits should also be taken into confidence. But he disagreed with the decision of the Deputy Prime Minister coming to the negotiation table with the separatists.

Mr Dubey said Article 370 that gave a special status to Jammu and Kashmir was strengthening separatist tendencies among a section of people in the valley. The separate Constitution of J & K should be scrapped and the Indian Constitution should be extended there.

He said a large number of soldiers belonging to other parts of the country had laid down their lives while protecting Kashmir and their sacrifices should not be allowed to go waste.

He was against the reopening of the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road which, he said, would lead to further infiltration of terrorists and smuggling of arms and ammunition.

Mr Dubey demanded that the Army should be given a free hand to crush terrorism in the state.

Plan to revive NCC in Kashmir

Jammu, November 29
Maintaining that the National Cadet Corps (NCC) will soon revive its mega activities in the militancy-hit Kashmir valley to attract youth, the Director-General (DG), NCC, Lieut-Gen B.K. Bopanna, yesterday asked the state government to come forward and help the NCC in involving students in self-development activities in the valley.

“We will soon re-start mega activities in the Kashmir valley to strengthen the cadet force and bring them out of the shadow of the gun, which has been preventing parents from sending children to NCC camps and activities during the past 14 years,” General Bopanna told reporters on the sidelines of a 12-day national integration camp of 600 cadets at Nagrota, 25 km from here.

Although cadets from the Jammu and Ladakh regions are performing very well, there is a problem in Kashmir as parents do not want children to don uniforms due to fear of the gun, he said. — PTI
