PAU alumnus interacts with students

Ludhiana, November 22
Dr S.S. Kang, Director, Risk Management Visa International, Singapore, an alumnus of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), delivered a lecture on ‘Life after PSU: Challenges and Opportunities’ organised by the College of Basic Sciences and Humanities under the chairmanship of Dr A.P.S. Mann, Dean of the college, here yesterday.

Addressing the dignitaries, Dr Kang recalled his days in PAU. He said that here instead of the students, their parents decide the future of their wards. “It is not always suitable for them and often leads to a decreasing interest in studies. These students cannot decide what they want to do in these days of competition,” said Dr Kang.

He highlighted the challenges faced by the students after going abroad and discussed the possible problems and their solutions. An interaction between students and teachers was held later. Dr Kang urged upon the Indian parents to let their children decide about their respective goals in life.

Day of functions at college for women

Ludhiana, November 22
A number of functions were organised at Master Tara Singh Memorial College for Women here today. At the entrance of the college, girls dressed up in rural finery sat on string cots and sang folk songs when Dr Rajesh Anand, Joint Secretary, University Grants Commission, the chief guest, and Ms Patti Sahota, MLA, British Columbia, the guest of honour, walked in to inaugurate several exhibitions.

Dr Anand inaugurated the newly renovated Home Science laboratories of the college. Soup, snacks and pudding making competitions had been organised for the students, who prepared lip-smacking snacks for the guests.

Then, the guests were led to an exhibition of paintings and sketches prepared by fine arts students. Dr Anand and Ms Sahota appreciated the clothes designed and tailored by students of fashion designing.

Students presented a cultural programme and the winners of soups, snacks and pudding competitions were awarded prizes by the two guests. The winners of the competitions are as following:

Soup-making competition: Tejinder Kaur 1, Ekta Chabbra 2 and Priyanka- consolation prize.

Pudding-making competition: Shelly Sehgal 1, Tarun Kanchan 2, and Aarti Dhir 3.

Snacks-making competition : Sonika Sharma 1, Neha 2, Aarti Dhir 3 and Tarun Kanchan- consolation prize.

1,200 take part in health quiz

Ludhiana, November 22
In a series of quizzes on health, Cremica today organised the ‘health and hygiene quiz’, at CFC School in which around 1,200 students took part. There was a special lecture by Dr Kumbahkarni, Senior Cardiac Surgeon, Hero DMC Heart Institute. He told children about health awareness and how they could maintain hygiene.

The quizzes will be organised in top 25 schools of the city and the winner team will participate in a state-level competition. A contest will be organised in which students will be asked to make their diet charts.

In the quiz there were questions linked to health, food, hygiene and balanced diet. There were buzzer round, puzzle round, fast forward round and bonus round and questions were asked to the audience as well. The quiz was managed by the Catalyst event managers and was anchored by Mr Aditya.

The winners were category A) Nitika, Henna and Manil; (runners-up) Money, Harmanpreet and Shanu;(Category B) Suraj Chopra, Sahil Dogra and Paras; (runnersup) Gautam, Amandeep and Rubal.

Jaspreet Kaur wins story-writing contest

Ludhiana, November 22
A state-level inter-school story-writing competition was organised by the National Foundation for Communal Harmony in collaboration with the state Education Department at Ramgarhia Girls Senior Secondary School, Millerganj, yesterday.

Nearly 15 students from schools all over the state participated in the contest. The topic of the contest was ‘Communal harmony and national integration’. The judges at of the contest were Ms Gurcharan Kaur Kochhar, Dr Gulzar Mohammad Gauria and Mr Hardev Chauhan.

The best 10 entries were given prizes. Jaspreet Kaur of Major Ajaib Singh Senior Secondary School, Faridkot, won the first prize. Karamjit Kaur and Paramjit Kaur, both from Sant Isher Singh School, Faridkot, shared the second prize.

The third prize went to Beant Kaur from GGN School, Ropar, while Jaspreet Kaur of Ramgarhia Girls Senior Secondary School won the consolation prize. The sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th prizes went to Gagandeep Kaur, Sukhbir Pal Kaur, Bir Devinder Singh, Baljit Kaur and Sonu, respectively.

Mr Sohan Lal, DPI (Secondary), was the chief guest. He was welcomed by Mr Ranjodh Singh, The Manager of the Ramgarhia Education Council.

1,000 vie for painting prize

Ludhiana, November 22
Over 1,000 students participated in an inter-school drawing and painting competition organised by Pidilite Industries at Guru Nanak Khalsa High School for Boys, Gujjarkhan Campus, here today.

The first prize winners in the junior most category were Gagandeep Kaur and Jugad. The second prize went to Devleen Singh. The third prize was shared by Prerna and Arshdeep. Navreet and Sareena won the first prize in group two. Japnoor and Pawan were declared second while and Jaspreet and Geetika stood third.

In the third category, Ankita and Lipika won the first prize.

Tanpreet and Jashanjit were second while Gaurav and Mankaran were third. In the fourth category, Richa and Jasmine won the first prize. Nidhi and Maninder were declared second and Roop stood third.

Wylie School to receive British Council award

Wylie Memorial High School, Brown Road, has been chosen for the British Council International School Award this year. Giving this information, Mr Sunil Pillay, manager of the school, said it was one of the six schools from all over India to receive the rare honour. He said the award was conferred upon those schools which have developed and sustained international curriculum links.

Mr Pillay said the staff was busy preparing projects on various topics. He said the Mathematics Department would prepare projects on ‘female literacy in Ludhiana’.

PSEB directed to refund tariff

Apex Chamber of Commerce and Industry has urged the PSEB to refund extra fee charged by it from the consumers by virtue of an order of the Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission on September 6, 2002. The order had been challenged by the chamber in the Punjab and Haryana High Court which had stayed its operation on January 6, 2003.

On September 6, 2002, the commission had passed an order for hike in power tariff with a retrospective effect of three months. Following a petition against the order, the High Court had stayed the operation of the order. The chamber has said, since the order was stayed and a number of consumers had deposited the tariff, the PSEB should refund the extra amount prior to the High Court’s order.

Youth club organises cultural night

Cultural activities help in developing brotherhood, cooperation and spirit of nationalism among people of various communities, it keeps away the hatred specially in the present situation where every individual, group and countries are in race to subdue each other. This was stated by the chief guest, Mr Sadhu Singh Dharamsot, MLA, while addressing a cultural night jointly organised by the Youth Club, Amloh, in association with the Kumbh gram panchayat, 4 km from here yesterday. Mr Dharamsot distributed mementos among artistes and club members. Mr S.K. Ahalluwalia, Deputy Commissioner-cum-Chairman of the cultural society, said cultural programmes specially in the rural areas were a source of recreation. The society had selected 20 schools in the district to make the students of the tricks used by the magicians.

S.K. Sharma, magician, kept the audience spellbound with his tricks.

Budding artistes Parminder Sharma’s song “Sanu kina toon piara, sada rab janada” regaled the audience, Mandeep Lucky, Hardeep Walia and Prem Sharma sang their songs. The Amloh council chief, Mr Baldev Singh Aulakh, the Gobindgarh council’s vice-chief, Mr Jagmeet Singh Bawa, the All-India steel re-rollers vice-chairman, Mr Chanan Singh Matharu, the block samiti chairman, Mr Dilbag Singh, the block Congress chief, Mr Shingra Singh Salana, The District Planning Board member, Mr Ranjit Singh Bhola, besides councillors, sarpanches and block samiti members were present on the occasion.
