Ludhiana, November 20
Taking a new initiative in creating dental awareness among the children, the Department of Dentistry, Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), under the guidance of Dr J. Bindra, Professor and Head, Department of Dentistry, has undertaken a series of free dental check-up camps and dental awareness campaigns in various schools in the city.
Two such camps have been conducted, in which at least 1,200 students have been examined at Ranjit Model School and Rajindra Model School. Dental awareness lectures were given by Dr J. Bindra using ultramodern gadgets like LCD projectors and slide shows. Pamphlets were distributed among the students and demonstrations were given for proper building technique and best diets to maintain healthy teeth. Dr Bindra also told the students about fixed teeth, in which support is taken from the teeth adjoining the missing teeth. Slides on cases of reimplantation of teeth lost due to trauma were shown to them and they were explained that how in case of such emergency, they should not throw away the lost teeth, but preserve these in moist gauze or milk and rush to the dentist as soon as possible and get these fixed.
Talking about some interesting observations made during the camp, Dr Bindra said, “Most of the students did not know the right brushing techniques and were unaware of as who was the right practitioner to be approached when in need of a particular dental treatment. They end up at places where the dentist is not qualified to do that particular job. It was also found out that many such children had ended up losing their teeth due to wrong handling by quacks. Students of higher classes showed special interest in cosmetic and aesthetic dentistry slides like whitening of teeth, building up of fractured or chipped tooth, orthodontic correction of teeth, smile designing, capping and veneers etc”.
Dr Bindra said the keen interest shown by the students was evident of the fact that the young generation was health conscious and needed proper guidance. Dr Bindra also told the students about implants which were giving to the patients with missing teeth or no teeth.
