Rights panel orders probe into thrashing by policemen

The Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) has directed the SSP, Ludhiana, to probe allegations levelled against two policemen of the Basti Jodhewal police station by a resident of Hargobind Nagar village, near Chhapar.

Rich tributes were paid to Bibi Jaswant Kaur at a condolence meeting held here today. A renowned educationist and Leftist leader, Bibi Jaswant Kaur died in the city earlier this week. Wife of Mr Jagjit Singh Lyallpuri, also a Leftist leader, Bibi Jaswant Kaur had actively participated in the freedom movement.

IGNOU emerges as a global leader

Indira Gandhi Open University (IGNOU) has emerged as a global leader in the field of distance education. However, this year the Vice-Chancellor of IGNOU, Prof H.P. Dixit, will not chair the international network of mega universities of the world. The next world summit of mega universities will be hosted in 2005 by Indira Gandhi National Open University with Prof H.P. Dixit, as its chairperson.

Maur group sweeps PAU union poll

In a clean sweep, the Maur group defeated the rival group with a comfortable margin in the PAU Employees Union elections whose results were declared this afternoon. All candidates of Maur-Amrit group, led by Mr D.P. Maur, defeated their rivals from the Mr Mahindroo group.

Tagore International celebrates annual day
Ludhiana, November 16
Mr Malkiat Singh Birmi, State Minister for Jails, Housing and Urban Development, feels that the educational institutions should lay more stress on spreading quality education in the rural areas, which is the real service to the society.
Mr Birmi was-addressing a well attended gathering on the occasion of the annual day function of Tagore International School at Sanhewal, 15 km from here, last evening.

Rotary Club holds family utsav
Ludhiana, November 16
The Rotary International District — 3070 organised a family utsav where Mr Harnam Dass Johar, Minister for Higher Education, Punjab, was the chief guest. Mr Johar appreciated the role and contribution of the organisation serving the weaker section of society. He commended the good work undertaken by Rotarians like blood donation, pulse polio and eye camps. He said more such bodies should join to help the downtrodden and the deprived.

ABVP  honours 140  students
Ludhiana, November 16
The local unit of the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) today organised Pratibha Samman Samaroh. On this occasion the ABVP honoured the students who had in their classes. About 140 students from 13 local colleges were honoured today. Mr Jaykrishan Chauhan, Director, Panjab University, Law College, Ludhiana, was the chief guest. Mr Madan Bassi from the Suraj Udyog was the special guest.

City couple sets up art gallery

Mr M.C. Munjal, Managing Director, Majestic Auto, and president, Rotary Club of Ludhiana Midtown, inaugurated the TAC Art Gallery at Rajguru Nagar here last night. The art gallery has been set up by a city resident, Mr Dinesh Mohindra, and his artist wife, Karuna.
