Govt Model School lift hockey title

New Delhi, November 13
Government Model School, Jalandhar trounced Town High School, Sundergarh by three goals to nil to annex the 23rd Sub-Junior Nehru Hockey Tournament at the Shivaji Stadium on Thursday.

In an one-sided match, the Jalandhar school led by one goal at the interval, when Harpreet Singh converted a penalty corner in the 20th minute.

On resumption, Bikramjit Singh enhanced the lead, also converting a penalty corner while Ranjodh Singh slotted home the third goal in the 53rd minute. The winners received a cash prize of Rs 96,000 while their coach received Rs 8000. The runners-up got Rs 64,000 and Rs 5,000 for their coach.

In the contest for the third place, Birsa Munda Vidyapitha trounced Baba Farid Public School, Faridkot (Punjab) 5-0. Libnus Kujur, who opened the account in the 25th minute, also scored the fourth and fifth goals while Paikash Lakra accounted for the second and third goals.

Rajnesh Kumar of Baba Farid School was adjudged the best player of the tournament while the Oswal Jain School received the best disciplined team trophy. Young Pioneer’s English School, Imphal were adjudged the promising team of the tournament.

Parnav Bhalla shines

An all-round display by Parnav Bhalla, who scored an unbeaten 61 and claimed two wickets for 23 runs, helped FCS Software Solutions beat Oil-Scope by nine wickets in the Suntan Cup Cricket Tournament at the Aiport Authority of India ground.

Scores: Oil-Scope: 135 all out in 24 overs (Krishan Taneja 32, A K Singh 33, Umesh Sharma 33, Himanshu 4 for 11, Arun 3 for 21, Parnav 2 for 23).

FCS Software: 136 for 1 in 22 overs (Parnav Bhalla 61 n o, Rajiv Trehan 43 n o).

Six-a-side tournament

ABN Amro Bank beat Sony by three wickets in a Star Alliance six-a-side cricket tournament at the Bhagat Singh College ground.

In other matches, E and L beat US Embassy by 43 runs (Gaurav 32, Anurag 29), Sony beat Dupont by four wickets (Ranvijay 31, Amitabh 22 n o), E and L beat Swarousky by five wickets (Gaurav 28), G E Capital beat Gillete by 11 runs (Rodney Charles 31) and E-Fund tied with Coca Cola.

National Stadium win

National Stadium beat R P Academy by 45 runs in the Bhavan Under-13 Cricket Tournament.

Scores: National Stadium: 187 for 8 in 30 overs (Unmukat Chand 69, Kunal 43, Ayush 3 for 33). RPC: 142 all out in 28 overs (Aditya Singh 49, Firoz 40, Nial Dobral 5 for 28).

Hero Honda win

Hero Honda defeated JRA by 31 runs in the 7th DG Phadkar Memorial Cricket Tournament at the Teri Oval. Scores: Hero Honda: 175 for 9 in 25 overs (Khazan Singh 50, Satish Sharma 22, Sampath Krishnan 4 for 32). JRA: 145 for 5 in 25 overs (Sri Ram 39, Ravi Chandran 28, Khazan Singh 2 for 21, Raghuvir Singh 2 for 28).

Mohit Tokas powers his way into final

Mohit Tokas of Madhya Pradesh knocked out Rupesh of SPSB to storm into the final of the 81kg bout of the Sports Authority of India Junior Boxing Championship at the Indira Gandhi indoor stadium ground on Thursday. Jasveer of Delhi outpointed Vinod Kumar of Haryana in the other 81kg semi-final to set up a title contest with Mohit.

Mayank Sethi stars for Ram Lal

An all-round performance by Mayank Sethi (3 for 43 and 60) enabled Ram Lal Anand College beat College of Vocational Studies by four wickets in the Inter-College Cricket Tournament at the Delhi University ground.

Scores: Vocational Studies: 198 for 7 in 40 overs (Udham Singh 100, Raj Kanwar 25, Mayank Sethi 3 for 43, Abhay Mayor 2 for 54)

Ram Lal Anand: 203 for 6 in 36.3 overs (Mayank Sethi 60, Abhay Mayor 45, Rajpal Tokas 33 n o, Vibhor Bhargav 2 for 41).

Shyam Lal College beat Maharaja Agrasen College by seven wickets in at the Khalsa College ground.

Three-way tie in Servo Masters Golf

New Delhi, November 13
Rookie Sandeep Syal submitted a card of four-under 68 to share the lead along with the experienced Pappan and Gast Ram at the half-way stage of the Rs 8.5 lakh Servo Masters Golf Tournament at the Digboi Golf Links course on Thursday. The trio had a total of five-under 139 for the tournament.

Vishal Singh was in sole fourth position with a total of four-under 140. Pritam Saikia of Assam matched the day’s best score of four-under 68 to share the fifth position along with Sanjay Kumar and SSP Chowrasia, who had a two-day total of three-under 141.

Sandeep Syal, who finished a creditable tied 43rd at the Hero Honda Masters in Delhi last week, played some flawless golf, except for a solitary hole today. Beginning from the tenth, the longest par-3, the lad from Chennai made a bogey after hitting his tee shot on the left of the green and failed to make up and down.

Gast Ram made five birdies while missing eagles on a couple of them. Girish Virk scored identical rounds of 74 on each of the two days to lead among the amateurs in the girls section.

Soma House dominate

Sonepat, November 13
The second day’s athletic events were also dominated by the inmates of Soma House in the 25th Inter-House Athletic meet of the Motilal Nehru School of Sports, Rai (Sonepat).

Monika, Rekha, Seema, Preeti, Ajay and Seema bagged the first positions in their respective events. The 400-meter relay (Boys) title went to the Indra House and Soma House won in girls’ section. Surya House remained winner in junior boys’ section and junior girls’ relay event was won by the Soma House.

Under-22 trials

Rohtak, November 13
The trials for the selection of Haryana cricket team (under-22) for the session 2003-2004 will be conducted by Haryana Cricket Association (HCA) at Karnal on November 15 at 9.30 am. Those born on or after September 1, 1981, are eligible for the trials. OSR
