St Xavier’s win basketball
tie Chandigarh, November 13 In the third match of the day, Moti Ram Arya Senior Secondary School, Sector 27, beat St John’s High School, Sector 26 by 29-12 with half-time score of 15-04. In the fourth match of the boys section, Shishu Niketan Senior Secondary School, Sector 22, got the better of Vivek High School, Sector 38, with scores being 42-24 while half -time score was 25-08. In the first match of the girls’ section, Vivek High School, Sector 38, lost to Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Sector 26, by 09-24 with half-time score of 09-24. In the second girls tie, St Anne’s School, Sector 32, beat Bhavan Vidyalya, Sector 27 (31-16) while the half-time score was 15-09. In the last girls’ match of the day, St Xavier’s got the better of Shishu Niketan School, Sector 22, by 28-07 while the half-time score was 20-04.
Children’s Day Yadavindrians will celebrate Children’s Day tomorrow by organising a one-day cycle race in which more than 600 students from Classes IV to XII of Yadavindra Public School, SAS Nagar, will take part. The race will take off from the school premises around 8.45 am. The children have been divided into various groups for the race.
Cricket tourney Sanjay Public School, Sector 44, outplayed Shishu Niketan Senior Secondary School, Sector 22, by seven wickets in the UT Inter-School Under-19 Cricket Tournament played here today. Shishu Niketan boys made 78 runs and were all out in 22 overs. Munish Sood took four wickets for 19 runs, while Gouravdeep claimed four wickets for 21 runs and Sukhmeen Singh bagged two wickets for 11 runs. Aditya was the highest scorer with 21 runs for the Shishu Niketan team. Sanjay School boys achieved the target in just 11 overs. Nikhil Sharma and Arun Rai scored 30 runs each for the winners.

20 golfers for CGA national camp Chandigarh, November 13 Players from Bangalore, Pune, Delhi and Chandigarh will be part of the camp. Top teaching professionals of India, including Jesse Grewal, Nonita Lal Queresh, Romit Bose, Vijay Divecha, Vikram Sethi, will take part in the camp to be held from 8 a.m. to 12 noon and 2 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. daily. The players attending are: Gurbaaz Mann, Tarun Sardesai, Gaurav Dewan, Shubham Jindal, Fatehbir Dhaliwal, Ajitesh Sandhu, Karan Singh, Jaskirat Dullet, Raghav Wahi, Amardeep Malik, Aditya Singh, Himmat Rai, Abhijit Chadha, Dilsher Sukhija and Gaganjit Bhullar. According to Mr D.P. Azad, president, Chandigarh Golf Association, the camp will enable golfers in India to work with one of the top coaches in the world at one-tenth the cost of similar coaching programme abroad. Dr Ponziano will be assisted by Jesse Grewal, Director of the Hero Honda CGA Golf Academy. The camp is being coordinated by Mr J.S. Cheema, senior vice-president, CGA, and Chairman, Golf Activities Committee. Mr Cheema said it was an honour for CGA to have Dr Donato Di Ponziano who had taken out time from his busy schedule to conduct the camp exclusively with CGA in India. Donato Di Ponziano began playing golf at the age of 10 and after a period as an amateur with 128 victories, he became a golf professional in 1980. At the beginning of his career as a golf professional he lived in the USA for five years working with illustrious golfing names as Gary Wiren, Davis Love, Paul Runyan, Michael Hebron, Jim Mc Lean, Hank Haney and many others. Since 1982 he has been the director of the National School for Golf Professionals of the Italian Golf Federation. In 1995 the European PGA recognised him as “Golf Professional of the Year” for his contribution in improving the technical preparation and image of the European Golf Professional. He is personal coach for players on the European Tour, Ladies European Tour, Woman PGA Tour, Challenge Tour and Asian Tour. |
St Stephen’s win hockey tourney Chandigarh, November 13 In the finals played today, Harjit and Aseem scored eight goals each while Amarbir scored five goals and Ritu Raj scored one. Jujhar Singh of GMSSS-35 was declared the best player of the meet while Harjit Saura was the best scorer. |
Shivalik school win basketball meet Chandigarh, November 13 Shivalik boys maintained their superiority from the beginning and did not allow their opponents to have lead at any point of the game. Dr D.S. Bedi, the Director-Principal of the winning school, told that their boys had trained with dedication. Earlier, in the matches played last evening, New Public School, Sector 18, YPS, SAS Nagar and SD Public School, Sector 32, scored easy wins over their rivals.
Karate meet Shishu Niketan Senior Secondary School, Sector 22, bagged the overall championship in under-14 and under-17 boys karate event in the UT Inter-School karate championship held here today. In the under-14 section, St Joseph’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, were overall runners-up while GMSSS-40 were adjudged runners up in the under-17 section. In the inter-school fencing meet, St Joseph’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, and Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 10, won the joint overall trophy by securing 24 points each in the under-14 section. GMSSS-33 were overall runners-up with 15 points while GMHS-41 were overall third with 12 points. |
PU boy wins gold in inter-varsity swimming Chandigarh, November 13 Shukla Jaidev of Gujarat University won the gold medal in 200-metre butterfly stroke event, while S. Veena of Bangalore bagged the gold medal in 800-metre freestyle event for women. Panjab University team also beat Barkatullah University in a waterpolo match. |

Traffic offender’s licence cancelled Chandigarh, November 13 Amit Negi, whose licence has been cancelled, has a history of 21 challans against him between November 11, 1998 and November 21, 2002. This is the first time the driving licence of a habitual offender has been cancelled by an authority outside the city on the recommendation of the Chandigarh police. This is the harshest punishment the Traffic Police has ever given to an offender. Apart from this, the traffic police today recommended the suspension of licences of 16 other habitual offenders from the city, disqualifying them from driving any vehicle for two to three months. The traffic police has requested the citizens to intimate the particulars of persons known to be habitual traffic offenders in their locality to the toll-free traffic helpline on telephone number 1073. |
