3-day conference on urology begins

Ludhiana, November 7
A three-day international live operative workshop and urology conference, hosted by the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, began here today in the presence of 400 experts from all over the world.

Dr Baldev Singh Aulakh, Urologist and Head of the Transplant Unit of the hospital said the aim behind organising the 13th annual conference of NZC-USI was to provide a common platform to experts from all over the world to exchange views.

A live operative workshop was organised where urologists from the UK, the USA, Germany and India performed rare surgeries on patients in the operation theatre of the DMCH.

Dr B.S. Aulakh said surgeries were shown on the screen to delegates in Dumra Auditorium. Dr Eugena Cho, Director, Laproscopic Donor Programme, University of Maryland (USA), performed lap donor nephrectomy and the renal recipient was operated upon by Dr Anant Kumar (UK). He said lap donor nephrectomy was the latest advancement in surgery which had decreased the morbidity rate.

Dr S.V. Kotwal from Delhi did PCNL for renal stone. “It is no-invasive modality of choice for renal stones that are larger and are at locations that do not allow use of ESWL. A tiny cut in the flank area is made and nephroscope is used to locate and remove the stone”, he said.

Dr Rupin Shah from Mumbai performed microscopic vasoepidedymal anastomosis. Dr Andreas J. Grass from Germany performed laser URS. Dr Tim Larner from the UK gave a video presentation on laser treatment of BPH. “Laser treatment is one of the latest advancements in urology field. There is very little bleeding and catheter could be removed the next day. Complications are also minimal,” said Dr Shah.

This was followed by guest lectures. Dr Ajay Nehra from the USA delivered the first guest lecture on sexual dysfunction and coronary artery diseases. The lecture was chaired by Dr S.C. Mathur, Dr N.P. Gupta. Dr Abhey Rane from the UK spoke on advantages and disadvantages of hand-assisted lap surgeries, one of the latest developments in laproscopic field. Dr Peter Ramington addressed the audience on costectomy in radical treatment for aggressive tumours.

The conference will formally be inaugurated in the evening at Hotel Park Plaza by the chief guest, Mr Santokh Singh, Minister Medical Education and Research, Punjab. Dr Gujral, Vice-Chancellor, Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Dr S.N. Wadhwa, President, USI, Dr A.K. Mandal, Secretary, NZC-USI, Dr Kim Mammen, President, NZUSI, Dr Daljit Singh, Principal and Chief Organiser of the conference, will be the guests of honour.

Minister meets dengue patients

Ludhiana, November 7
Chaudhary Jagjit Singh, Local Bodies Minister, along with senior officers of the district administration, Municipal Corporation and Health Department, today visited the Civil Hospital and DMC Hospital ane met dengue patients.

Earlier, the minister presided over a meeting of the officers in the Circuit House to review the anti-dengue steps taken by the government departments. He expressed satisfaction over the steps taken so far by all departments in this connection. He asked the officers to continue their till the problem was eroded.

He said the government was fully alert. Municipal corporations and municipal councils had been directed to ensure proper cleanliness and fogging in their respective areas.

He said the administration was also conducting awareness programmes to educate the people to take preventive measures. The treatment of dengue was being done free of cost at Civil Hospital. No charges were being taken for the diagnostic tests. Nominal charges of Rs 60 per unit only were being charged for the separation of platelets from a unit of blood in the Civil Hospital, Ludhiana.

The minister appealed the people that in case of the symptoms of the dengue, they should immediately get the dengue test done in the Civil Hospital and avail themselves of the free treatment.

Mr Anurag Verma, Deputy Commissioner informed the minister about the anti-dengue measures being taken by the administration. He said an awareness campaign launched by the administration had brought good results.

The DC said the fogging schedule had been published in newspapers and the phone numbers of three senior officers — the Joint Commissioner MC, the SDM (East) and the Civil Surgeon — were given for making any complaint.

Mr S.K. Sharma said the Municipal Corporation had been carrying out fogging since July. More than 80 localities had been covered so far. He said the fogging and cleanliness campaign would continue till the eradication of the disease.

Ravneet wins matka

The annual athletic meet was organised at SKSK Educational Institute here today.
Various events including 100-m race, spoon race, matka race, slow cycling, three-legged race and triple jump, were organised. In the primary section, contests were divided classwise. Anubhav, Arshpreet and Ramandeep stood first, second and third, respectively, among kids of Nursery class. From LKG, Rahul, Ritik and Avinash were given prizes. In the UKG, section Manpreet, Vishawdeep and Harshdeep were declared first, second and third, respectively. From Class I, Lakhvinder, Shehbaz and Jaswinder won top positions. Gulnaz, Shubham and Raghav, won first three prizes among the students of Class II.

In triple jump, Kulwinder, Muneet and Chahat, all Class IX students, won prizes. In matka race, Ravneet of Class IX stood first. In slow cycling, Prabhjot from Class VIII, Sahil from Class VII and Jaspreet from Class VII stood first, second and third, respectively. In 100-m race for girls, Harneet, Meenakshi and Saila won top three ranks.

In 100-m race for boys, Manmohit, Rohit Kumar and Rahul Jaswal were declared the fastest runners. In spoon race, Guarav Simar, Tarvinder and Vishal won prizes.

Prizes were given away to the winners by Mr Binder Mohan Singh and Ms Rajinder Kaur, Director and Principal of the school, respectively. Mr Satinder Singh, Vice-Principal, congratulated the winners.
