151 donate blood at camp

Chandigarh, November 7
A blood donation camp was organised by the Bhakra Beas Management Board in association with a team from Transfusion Medicine, PGI, at the BBMB Rest House, Sector 35, here today.

The camp was inaugurated by Mrs Sushila Kumar, wife of the late Major-Gen B.N. Kumar, former Chairman, BBMB. As many as 151 officers and officials of the BBMB donated blood. The BBMB has been organising blood donation camps for the past 16 years at all its projects and this was the 22nd blood donation camp organised by the BBMB.

Mr Rakesh Nath, Chairman, BBMB, and other senior officers of the BBMB were in the first batch to donate blood. Today was also the death anniversary of the late Major-Gen B.N Kumar who was shot dead in 1988 by militants during the days of terrorism in Punjab.

State Banks of Patiala, Indore to clash in finals

Chandigarh, November 7
The State Bank of Patiala and the State Bank of Indore will clash with each other in tomorrow’s final of the cricket tournament of the Banks Olympiad sports meet being held here today at Cricket Stadium, Sector 16.

In the first semi-finals, the State Bank of Indore outplayed the State Bank of Mysore by 103 runs. Mr J.P. Varma, General Manager (D&PB), State Bank of India, who are the coordinators of the cricket meet watched the match and interacted with the teams. Brief scores: State Bank of Indore: 216 runs for five in 45 overs (C.P. Sahu 31, Manish Panchasara 56, Devinder Bundela 33, Jatin 39, Aravinda 2 for 59). State Bank of Mysore: 113 runs for nine in 34.1 overs (K.R. Kishore 33, Shashi Kumar 32, Subodh Jain 2 for 28, Devindra 2 for 33).

In the second semi- final, the State Bank of Patiala defeated the State Bank of Saurashtra by seven wickets. Brief scores: State Bank of Saurashtra:138 runs all out in 41 overs (Kamlesh Diwakar 61, Kanaiya Vaghela 22, Rajeeb Sharma 3 for eight, Rajiv Shardai 3 for 23).

State Bank of Patiala: 140 runs for three in 39 overs (Rajiv Shardai 43, Rajeeb 26, Munish 22 n,o.,Virbhadra Gohi 3 for 22). The finals will be played tomorrow.

Football

The Bank of India defeated the Reserve Bank of India by three goals to nil in the match for the third place. The goals were scored by Hasan (27th minute), 41st minute and then in 37th minute of the second half. Earlier in the finals played at Patiala, Allahabad Bank went down fighting to the State Bank of Travancore by 0-4. The goals were scored by Abdul in the 38th minute, Pardeep in 52nd and 83rd minute and Anil Kumar Paul in the 87th minute.

MCM DAV eves enter TT final

Chandigarh, November 7
MCM DAV College for Women, Sector 36, will meet GGS College for Women, Sector 26, in the tomorrow's final of the Panjab University Inter-College Table Tennis (women) Tournament played here today on the MCM College premises. In the first semi-final played today, MCM DAV-36 defeated SBBS Girls College, Sukhanand, 3-0. Amarpreet, Harshbala and Poonam won their respective matches. In the second semifinal, GGSC-26 beat AS College for Women, Khanna, 3-0. Pushpa, Rinki and Harpreet won their respective singles matches.

In the men semifinals tie, DAV College, Chandigarh, beat RSD Ferozepore, 3-0, while Panjab University Campus, Chandigarh, defeated SGGS College, Sector 26, 3-2.

In cricket, PU Campus reached the final. In the semifinals played here, PU Campus men routed Government College, Ludhiana, by 107 runs. They will now meet DAV College, Sector 10, Chandigarh, who defeated GGD SD College, Sector 32, by seven wickets.

St Stephen's register win

St Stephen's School, Sector 45, got the better of Tender Heart School, Sector 33, by nine wickets in the ICSE Inter-School Cricket Tournament (Chandigarh region), which began today at St Stephen's School here. In the second tie, Yadavindra Public School, SAS Nagar, defeated DAV, Dera Bassi, by 140 runs. Harmanjoy of YPS scored 72 runs, while Rahul Sharma of YPS claimed three wickets for 31 runs.

Carrom meet

The Third Saupin's Inter-School Carrom Tournament, under the aegis of Panchkula District Carrom Association, will begin tomorrow at Saupin's School, Sector 9, Panchkula. In this meet, players from eight schools of the city will take part. In the team championship, 17 teams, with nine in boys section and eight in girls section, will take part. Over 100 players will participate in the individual event. This was stated by Mr R.S. Yadav, general secretary of the association.

Babla bags golf title

Defending champion Babla Singh of Income Tax, Kolkata, with Gross 76 points emerged winner in the Central Revenue All-India Invitational Golf Tournament, which was held today at the Chandigarh Golf Club. Ms S.S. Bedi, wife of Chief Commissioner, Customs and Central Excise, Chandigarh zone, gave away the prizes.

According to Mr G.S. Narang, Commissioner, Customs and Central Excise (Jalandhar Division) and Chairman of the Organising Committee, 91 entries were received whereas 71 golfers actually took part.

Later, Mr S.S. Bedi praised the club management for their help in holding the tournament.

Show-cause notice to Neelam cinema

Chandigarh, November 7
The Chandigarh Administration today issued a show-cause notice to Neelam cinema in Sector 17 for not complying with the basic set of directions which were agreed upon about four weeks ago.

The cinema’s managers and owners have been given four days’ time asking them to show-cause as to why their licence should not be cancelled. Earlier the Administration issued a show-cause notice to Piccadilly cinema in Sector 34 and Batra cinema in Sector 37. Both the cinema houses are conducting their repair jobs at present. A team of the Administration had conducted a study in all cinema houses. It was found that toilets in Piccadilly cinema were not up to the mark and the fire-fighting system was obsolete. In Batra cinema the seats were not proper and the gents toilet was not in order.

The cinema owners and managers can respond by even rectifying their defects. The Administration had hiked the rates of cinema tickets but had imposed riders for improvement.
