German teacher’s gesture for kids with cancer

It is something these children really look forward to and with loads of gifts and toys from Germany, they couldn't have asked for more, while being admitted to a hospital.
A school teacher in Germany, Erika Pruemm raised Rs 1.50 lakh for the treatment of these children, admitted to the PGI cancer ward. “Ever since my sister visited Chandigarh and saw some of these children did not have enough money for treatment, she raised money back home in Germany and sent it through me,” said Mrs Inge Sharma, who is in the city visiting her relatives.

Mrs Sharma, visited the wards at PGI Advanced Paediatric Centre and spent sometime with the children. Members of Sahayta, an NGO helping children suffering from cancer, were present on the occasion.

Erika had visited the city a few months ago. She organised concerts in Germany so that more money could be arranged by creating awareness about the suffering of these underprivileged children”, said Inge.

Erika, has also been selling greeting cards, made by Sahayta to people in Germany, to raise funds for the children suffering from cancer.

Sahayta Cancer Sahyog has been involved in providing emotional support and financial assistance to patients and families fighting cancer. Many other rehabilitation programmes are also being run by Sahayta for patients admitted to the PGI.

The President of Sahayta, Ms Neelu Tuli, said their NGO had been granted full membership of the International Confederation of Childhood Cancer Parent Organisations at Dublin in Ireland. She said the work being done by their NGO with paediatric oncologist, Dr R.K. Marwah, and Dr Amita Trehan at the PGI, had also been appreciated by the international confederation.

Lecture on nutrition

The Additional Professor and Head of PGI’s Paediatric and Gastroenterology Department, Dr B.R. Thapa, delivered a lecture on nutrition and childhood diseases at DAV Model School in Sector 15.

Dr Thapa talked about various aspects of child development and common problems observed in pre-school children. Teachers and students discussed the problems they had observed among children and put their queries to Dr Thapa. The in charge of NTT section, Ms Sweety Bahl, delivered the vote of thanks.

GNE win kabaddi title

Dera Bassi, October 24
The title of two-day inter-college kabaddi tournament, organised at the Sri Sukhmani Institute of Engineering and Technology, Dera Bassi, was clinched by the GNE, Ludhiana, here yesterday.
In the tournament, BBSBEC, Fatehgarh Sahib, remained the runner-up while the third position was bagged by the GTB, Malout.

Organised by Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar, 14 teams from different private engineering collages, affiliated with the university, participated in the tournament.

Mr Avtar Singh, chairman of the Sri Sukhmani Institute of Engineering and Technology, Dera Bassi, gave away prizes to the wining teams. He also appreciated the participants for playing with sportsmanship.

As a part of the NSS activities, a hepatitis-B vaccination camp was also organised on the collage premises in which students and teachers were administered vaccines.

Besides students of the college, those who were present at the occasion include Ms Kanwaljit Kaur, director of the Institute, Wg Cmdr. P. Prabhakar, director of Rand D wing, and other prominent persons of the area.

Team members of St Stephen’s School who won the Edmund Rice Tournament in Chandigarh on Friday.

Chandigarh, October 24
In a closely contested final match of the Edmund Rice Tournament (under 13), St Stephen’s, Sector 45, today beat St John’s, Sector 26, by one wicket.

Brief scores: St John’s 93 for 9 in the stipulated 30 overs (Saranjit Singh 21, Kunal 12; Gaurav 4 for 14). St Stephen’s 94 for 9 in 29.3 overs (Vivek 21, Sudhanshu 18, Akshay 16; Manan 2 for 13 and Vishal 2 for 14).

Probe ordered into threat to auto company owner

Zirakpur, October 24
Taking a serious note of a complaint of managing director of Titan Motors Private Limited, an authorised service station of the Telco company, located in Nabha village along the Chandigarh-Patiala highway, the Director-General of Punjab Police (DGP) has marked an inquiry to the Senior Superintendent of Police(SSP), Patiala.

In his complaint to the DGP, Mr B.S. Bedi, managing director of the service station, has alleged that Puneet Bhardwaj, a resident of Sector 8 in Panchkula, visited the service station on October 22 and threatened him and his employees with dire consequences.

He was accompanied by a police personnel from the Zirakpur police post and some men when he came to the station, alleged Mr Bedi.

He also stated that Puneet pointed a pistol at him, directing him to wind up the service station since he had purchased that property.

Mr Bedi alleged that he again visited the service station on October 23 accompanied by around 20 men and started removing structures there. When asked to produce the title deed and sale deed of the land, Puneet Bhardwaj failed to do so, he added.

Mr Balwinder Singh Brar, DSP, Dera Bassi, said that an inquiry is being conducted in the matter and strict action would be taken against anybody found guilty.

Shopkeepers challaned for underweighing

Chandigarh, October 24
The Weights and Measure Department of the Chandigarh Administration has caught a total of 12 shopkeepers for underweighing and for not displaying rates. These include halwais, dry fruit sellers and two traders in the grain market, Sector 26.

Fines ranging from Rs 3,000 to Rs 30,000 were slapped on the traders, well placed sources confirmed. Teams of the weights and measures department had conducted searches in the city. Sources said a traders was found selling dry fruits without displaying the rates. Another halwai was caught while selling underweight boxes of sweet.

At another place a shopkeeper was found using weights which are not standardised. All the traders were imposed challans.

DPC meeting held

Chandigarh, October 24
The Chandigarh Administration today held a Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC) meeting to promote an Inspector as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP). The name of Mr Roshan Lal has been reportedly cleared, a formal order will be issued soon, sources said.

Another promotion in the Police Department is scheduled to be held in the next fortnight to promote one more inspector as DSP. Mr Inderjit Singh and Mr Arjun Jaggi are in the race. A DPC has already been held, only an order has to be issued.
