Check your thermometer for accuracy
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, October 17
If you are feeling feverish, consult the doctor instead of relying on your thermometer. A number of cases have come to light in which patients had to suffer from mental agony due to of their faulty thermometers. Chemists feel that since the mercury in the thermometer is set manually, there could be a manufacturing defect in it.

Mr Pramod Jain, a local resident, said that he was feeling like having mild fever for the past few days. He consulted one of the best city physicians, who initially said that it could be viral fever due to the changing weather. But whenever he noted down his temperature, the thermometer showed 99°F. “After about a week, the doctor asked me to under-go for certain tests. Blood tests, urine tests, haemoglobin, ESR etc were conducted but the reports were normal. Though I was relieved that everything was normal, I was worried as to why I was suffering from low-grade fever?

One of my relatives advised me to change the thermometer. I bought a new digital thermometer and that showed absolutely normal temperature. I noted my temperature for a week in the new thermometer and it showed normal body temperature. I suffered from stress due to the faulty thermometer”, said Mr Pramod.

Another patient Reena, suffering from viral fever, had to go through a similar situation. “My thermometer always showed temperature of 99 to 99.5°F. Though the doctor told me not to get worried, I got panicky. My ultra-sound, blood test, and acid, urine tests etc were done but the reports were normal. Then the doctor advised me to stop looking at the thermometer. I stopped noticing my fever and I was alright within a few days. I was under tension because I used to see my temperature thrice a day and everytime there was a variation”, said Reena.
