Modern lift Sardar Patel title

New Delhi, October 14
An all-round display by Manan Sharma (77, 8x4, 2x6 and 4 for 2) and a quickfire 68, studded with nine fours, by Karan Khanna helped Modern School, Barakhamba Road beat Delhi Public School, Mathura Road by 113 runs and annexed the inaugural Sardar Patel Vidyalaya Inter-School Under-15 Cricket Tournament for the M L Sharma Trophy at the Sardar Patel school ground.

Manan Sharma was declared the man of the match. Abhishek Kapoor of Modern School was adjudged the best batsman. Naman Khanna, who took 15 wickets, got the best bowler award. Shivam Sharma of DPS and Amitoze Singh of Sardar Patel were declared the man of the tournament and best fielder respectively.

Former Test player Yashpal Sharma gave away the prizes. Dronacharya cricket coach Gurcharan Singh was also present.

Scores: Modern School: 237 for 6 in 50 overs (Manan Sharma 77, Karan Khanna 68, Ankit Singh 3 for 49, Shivam Sharma 2 for 57).

DPS: 124 all out in 24.1 overs (Shivam Sharma 23, Gandharbh Mehndi Ratta 23, Manan Sharma 4 for 2, Mayank Aggarwal 2 for 13, Luv Shoery 2 for 25).

Neha Aggarwal bags double crown in TT

Harshit Chand of Uttar Pradesh will take on Rajiv Ghai of Delhi in the men’s singles final of the 16th Jaspal Kaur Memorial Open Table Tennis Tournament on Wednesday.

Neha Aggarwal will take on Esha Monga, both of Manav Sthali School, in the women’s singles final. Harshit Chand also annexed the boys singles title defeating top seed Sunal Jain 10-12, 12-10, 12-10, 13-15, 8-11, 1-7. Neha Aggarwal won a double crown when she pocketed the junior girls and girls singles titles.

Neha beat Esha Monga 11-9, 9-11, 11-6, 11-8, 11-9 in the girls singles final while she got the better of Esha Monga again by 12-10, 11-3, 14-12 in the sub-junior girls final.

Other results: Cadet girls final: Esha Monga beat Sanya Sehgal 11-6, 11-9, 11-9. Cadet boys final: Kartik Kukreja b Dipesh Techchandani 5-11, 6-11, 11-6, 11-4, 11-7. Sub-junior boys final: Aman Ahuja b Dhruv Arora 11-4, 11-5, 11-7.

Men’s singles semi-finals: Rajiv Ghai b Nitin Mahajan 7-11, 13-11, 13-11, 11-9, 6-11, 14-12; Harshit Chand b Rajat Chopra 7-11, 9-11, 13-11, 18-16, 13-11, 13-15, 11-8.

Khalsa, Ganga School move up

New Delhi, October 14
SGG JI Khalsa Academy, Patiala trounced Guru Harkishasn Public School, Shahdara 4-0 and Ganga International School defeated SGTB School, Barwala 4-0 in the under-14 section of the Central Board of Secondary Education North Zone Hockey Tournament at the Ganga School ground on Tuesday.

In other matches in the under-14 section, DAV Public School, Jalandhar beat University Campus, Rohtak 5-0 while Sacred Heart School, Ludhiana defeated Bal Bharti School, Pitampura 2-0.

In the under-19 girls section, Maharaja Agarsen Girls School, Sirsa beat Arya Model Girls School, Panipat 4-0 while Vidya Devi Jindal School beat Presentation Convent 5-0.

In the boys under-19 section, S S Mota Singh, Paschim Vihar beat Blue Bells School, Gurgaon 2-1, Shaj Satnaw Ji, Sirsa beat GHPS, Shahdara 4-0 and Police DAV, Jalandhar beat St. Momas School, Jalandhar 4-2.

Manish Jain shines

An all-round display by Manish Jain (45 and 3 for 22) and deadly bowling by Yaspal (3 for 29) helped Skyways Bax beat Tropical-Aagus by five runs in the ACCD Cricket Tournament.

Scores: Skyways-Bax: 151 for 8 in 25 overs (Manish Jain 45, Deepak Kushal 26, Manish Mangi 3 for 24). Tropical-Aagus: 147 for 9 in 25 overs (Lakshmi 41, Manish Jain 3 for 22, Yashpal 3 for 29).

Bargodia win

N K Bargodia School beat Frank Anthony School 4-0, Nivia School drew with St. Vivekananda School 1-1 and Dhani Ram School drew with St. Columba’s goalless in the Nivia Football Tournament at the Ambedkar Stadium on Tuesday. TNS

Virat Kohli to lead Delhi U-15 team

New Delhi, October 14
Virat Kohli will lead the 16-member Delhi Under-15 cricket team in the first two games of the Polly Umrigar Trophy Cricket Tournament against Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir to be played in Delhi from October 27 to 29 and November 6 to 8. The team was selected by the Junior Selection Committee of the Delhi and District Cricket Association headed by its sports secretary Sunil Dev. Bikker Bahadur and Pawan Sharma were the other members of the selection panel.

The selected players will have to report to coach M P Singh and manager B S Joban at the National Stadium on Wednesday at 8.30 am.

The team is: Virat Kohli, Karan Rai (vice-captain), Rushil Bhaskar, Neeraj Bansal, Rahul Yadav (wicket-keeper), Tejasvi Yadav, Onant Jai Singh, Varoon Sood, Shobit Kaushik, Akshay Sharma, Manan Sharma, Rohit Yadav, Rahul Bhardwaj, Pardeep Sangwan, Parshant Gupta and Somya Vardhan Azad.

Nehru Girls Hockey

Govt Girls High School, Ranchi trounced G V Raja Sports School, Thiruvanathapuram 13-0, while Karamt Hussain Muslim Girls Inter-College, Lucknow scored an identical 13-0 victory against Sarah Tucker HS, Palaymkottai in the Nehru Junior Girls Hockey Tournament at the Shivaji Stadium on Tuesday.

In the third match, DRP National High School, Durg trounced St. Ann’s School, Bardez (Goa) 6-1.

Amity to hold sports gala

New Delhi, October 14
Over 1800 students from various institutions under the Amity fold will participate in the Inter-Institutional Sports Meet ‘Sangathan 2003’ which was inaugurated at the Amity School, Noida on Monday.

Students from various Amity institutions will compete in cricket, football, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, badminton, athletics, hockey and squash in the next 20 days. The events will conclude on October 31.

In the opening match in basketball, Centre of International Business won the title, defeating Amity School of Insurance, Amity Business School and the Actuarial Sciences.

Founder president of Amity institutions Dr Ashok K Chauhan said he was overwhelmed by the tremendous response to the sports meet to celebrate the Founder’s Day. Also present at the inaugural function was president of the Ritnand Balved Education Foundation Atul Chauhan.

CBSE TT concludes

Gurgaon, October 14
The four-day CBSE Cluster-IX Table Tennis Tournament 2003, organised by S. D. Adarsh Vidyalaya, concluded today with DPS Maruti Kunj bagging the overall shield in the boys’ category and University Campus School (Rohtak) bagging overall shield in the girls’ category.

Eighty schools from Haryana affiliated to CBSE took part in the tournament. About 10,000 participants took part in the event. The Blue Bells, Sr Secondary School, was the runners-up in the overall shield in the boys’ category, DPS Maruti Kunj and GRGN (Sirsa) shared the honours for the runners-up in the overall shield in the girls category.
