Measures to check fire-cracker accidents
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 14
The Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh will allow stalls for the sale of fire-crackers to be set up only at the sites earmarked by the Chandigarh Administration. The corporation has started receiving applications for the sale of fire-crackers, said a senior officer of the corporation.

In the wake of a ban on certain types of fire-crackers, the Fire Department has taken steps to ensure that the guidelines were not violated. Regular checks would be conducted across the city to check whether the shopkeepers were selling any banned fire-crackers. “The licence of any shop found selling the banned fire-crackers would be cancelled. It would also be ensured that the stalls or the shops having the permission to sell the fire-crackers were not located in congested areas to avoid any untoward incident”, said the officer. The fire department which comes under the corporation has been asked to enforce the guidelines.

The authorities concerned had already started receiving applications for the sale of fire-crackers. But as per the rule, the permission of the Estate Office and the police department was also required. As per rules, the licence would have to keep a record of all crackers and produce it before the enforcing authorities. The licences have been asked not to store inflammable articles near the place where fire-crackers are being sold.

The minimum distance between two shops selling fire-crackers has to be 15 metres. The safety parameters, including the working condition of the fire extinguishers, would be checked. On the quantity of fire-crackers allowed to be stored, the officer said it should not exceed 15 kg. Raids could also be conducted to check unauthorised storing of fire-crackers.

Sources in the corporation said the maximum number of stalls to sell fire-crackers would come up a week before Divali. The fire department would keep its staff on high alert so that timely help could reach in case of a mishap. A special vigil would be kept around the stalls selling fire-crackers. The electricity department has been asked to ensure that no loose wires hung in the area where crackers were being sold, said the officer.
