MTNL Mela
Wanna enjoy the pink of health, visit this mela
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, October 10
The 10th MTNL Perfect Health Mela, organised by the Heart Care Foundation of India (HCFI) in association with the Union Ministry of Science and Technology and Delhi Health
Department, opened in the Capital’s most crowded East Delhi, Laxmi Nagar today for 10 days.

The first-ever mela in East Delhi will create awareness about all aspects of health with a focus on lifestyle interventions and preventive healthcare, and the much-needed health education.

A number of unique modules and novel concepts concerning total health are the hallmark of the mela which has a participation of over 300 stalls from the government and the non-government sectors and an expected attendance of over a million people during the 10 days.

In view of the increasing incidence of dengue in the Capital, the MCD and the NAMP have put on display live mosquitoes causing malaria and dengue. The stall was crowded with people who wanted to make frantic enquiries about the deadly disease.

Naturopathy, Yoga, Ayurveda and Unani systems of medicine have arranged for the OPDS at the mela. Special exhibitions on

lifestyle interventions on homeopathy are also put up.

The mela president, Dr K K Aggarwal, who is also the Executive Vice-Chairman, HCFI, advised the people against malnutrition and wrong dietary habits. They constitute a major risk factor for ill health.

Dr Aggarwal also spoke against overeating. “The more you eat, the earlier you leave the planet. Eat less and walk more. Too much resting is rusting. A faulty lifestyle, stresses and strains caused by modern

living are responsible for the large-scale morbidity and mortality,” Dr Aggarwal said.

He stressed regular exercise, meditation and spiritual orientation in everyday life.

Mr Narinder Sharma, Chairman and Managing Director, MTNL, pointed out that curative approach in the health management does not offer a lasting solution to the problem of ill health. Apart from being costly, the drugs may also have side-effects.

The solution lies in prevention which needs to be observed right from the childhood.

Ramesh emerges champion in Rating Chess
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, October 10
International Master R B Ramesh of Indian Oil Corporation annexed the Parsvnath International Rating Chess Tournament title by logging nine points from eleven rounds at the Bapu Sewa Samaj in New Delhi.

Ramesh had won the Piloo Modi Championship at Lucknow a fortnight ago. Ramesh was joined on the top of the table by Grandmasters Alexander Fominyh of Russia and Marat Dzhumaev of Uzbekistan as they scored fighting victories over Tahidov and Harikrishna respectively.

Ramesh, maintaining his fine form, inflicted a Sicilian defeat on International Master Sriram Jha. Securing the centre early, Ramesh bottled up Jha’s light-coloured bishop, gaining a significant advantage. Going in for the kill, Ramesh gave his queen for two rooks, finishing the game in 30 moves.

Harikrishna lost his first game of the tournament, a crucial one at that, after 83 moves and five hours of play. Grandmaster Dzhumaev, who hung on precariously in a very difficult queen and rook ending, deserves all credit for stretching Harikrishna to the limit. Just when a victory and a share in the title looked within the reach, Harikrishna erred, giving Dzhumaev a place in the podium.

The success of a tournament is largely determined by its smooth organisation, and making of the International Master and Grand Master norms. The Rating Chess Tournament, smoothly conducted by international arbiter R.S.Tiwari, saw three norms being made. While R B Ramesh made his final GM norm, Abhijit Gupta and R Balasubramanium made their maiden IM norms.

During the closing ceremony on Friday, organising secretary Bharat Singh Chauhan, who is also the secretary of the Delhi Chess Association, lauded the contribution of Parsvnath Developers in sponsoring the event, and their gesture would go a long way in giving the game a major thrust in the Capital.
