Panchkula lads enter under-15 cricket final

Panchkula boys continued with their winning spree when they humbled Faridabad by 15 runs to enter the final of the Haryana state Inter-District Under-15 cricket tournament being played at Rohtak. The Panchkula boys led by Anupam Gambhir did well with both bat and bowl. After winning the toss Panchkula had opted to bat first.

Panchkula scored 156 runs for the loss of nine wickets in 35 overs. Amit Prashar scored 30 runs followed by Anupam Gambhir who made 27. Simranjit Singh and Manoj claimed two w ickets each for 27 and 23 runs, respectively. In reply, Faridabad were bundled out for 139 in 33.1 overs. Rajat scored 25 runs, while Vineet Goyal bagged three wickets for 18 runs, followed by K.Malik and Anupam, who took two wickets each by giving 31 runs and 21 runs respectively.

Sanjay Trophy

The Chandigarh sub-junior boys football championship for Sanjay Trophy will begin tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the football stadium, Sector 17, Chandigarh. The championship has been sponsored by Sanjay Public School, Sector 44, and so far 10 teams have confirmed their participation. The opening tie will be played between St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, and Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 20.

Sports meet

Little Flower School, Sector 14, Panchkula, won a rich haul of titles in the Panchkula inter-school sports meet held on Monday. Its students won the under-14 and under 17 football titles.The school represented Panchkula zone and got the better of Kalka zone in the above age groups. In badminton, Little Flower school shuttlers bagged the under-17 title.

Table tennis tourney

Bhavan Vidyalya (BV), Sector 27, clinched the under-19 girls table tennis title in the UT inter -school table tennis tounament played here on Monday at Sector 23 hall. They beat IS Dev Samaj Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 21.

Sacred Heart Senior Secondary school, Sector 2,6 which outplayed New Public School, Sector 18, (3-2) came third.

In the under-14 girls semifinal matches, DAV Public School, Sector 8, defeated New Public school, Sector 18, by three matches to nil while Bhavan Vidyalya beat Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Sector 26 by 3-0 to sail into the final.

Results: BV-27 b ISDSSS-21 3-0 (Arshdeep b Taranpreet 11-9, 11-8, 11-4; Guneet b Harjit Saini 11-1,11-0,11-7; Saloni b Monika 11-0,11-5,11-4.

Volleyball tournament

Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Sector 26, and PML SD Public School, Sector 32, Chandigarh, surged ahead in the girls and boys section, respectively, in the CBSE Cluster XI Volleyball Tournament, which was inaugurated on Monday by Mr PI Sabu, Regional Officer, CBSE. Mr Pushkar Vohra, AEO, Sports, CBSE, New Delhi, spoke on the occasion.

Results: boys- Manav Mangal High school, Sector 21, beat DAV Public School, SAS Nagar 25-17, 25-08; Moti Ram Senior Secondary school, Sector 27, beat Alpine Public school, Bhawna, Pinjore, 25-0, 25-18; Eicher Public school, Parwanoo beat Army Public School, Chandimandir, 25-12, 25-22; SPS-41 beat DAV Senior Secondary School, Panchkula, 25-01, 25-12; NPS-18 beat Chaplese School, Shimla, 25-15, 25-10; PML SD Public School, Sector 32 beat Jaininder Pubic School, Panchkula, 25-10, 25-12.

Girls: Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Secor 26 beat St Peter’s Public School, Sector 37, Chandigarh 25-11, 25-08.

10-yr-old city golfer finishes runner-up

Ten-year-old K. Raghav Bhandari finished runner-up in the Noida Junior/Sub-Junior Golf Tournament held at Noida from September 23 to 26 under the aegis of the Indian Golf Union. The tournament saw a close contest between Raghav and Virat Badhwar of Delhi, who was able to take the lead from Raghav by just one stroke. Raghav’s total score over 54 holes was 257, whereas that of Virat was 256.

Raghav shot his best score of 9 over par 72 which is unique at such a young age.

Raghav holds the title of the Chandigarh state Championship conducted by the Chandigarh Golf Association for the last two years.

This year he has played all the six tournaments, conducted by the Indian Golf Union which is the highest amongst the Sub-Junior Golfers. Raghav played the Eagleton Junior /Sub-Junior Golf Championship and the Southern India Junior/Sub-Junior Golf Championship held at Banglore where he finished first and second runner-up.

At the Northern India Junior/Sub-Junior Golf Championship held at the Army Golf Course in Delhi also Raghav finished runner-up and at the Chandigarh Junior/Sub-Junior Golf Championship, held from September 17 to 20, there was a close contest between Raghav and Virat.

Since this year Raghav has played the largest number of tournament amongst the sub/junior golfers in the country and his total tally of points granted by the IGU is also the highest.

Garbage treatment plant mooted

The Administration will acquire at least 13 acres of land falling between Dadumajra village and Sector 25 for the purpose of setting up a garbage treatment plant in the city which will generate electricity.

A notice under Section 6 of the Land Acquisition Act, 1894, has been issued. The owners of the land will be paid compensation. Sources said the plant would take about three years to come up. A feasibility study had been done and such plants had already come up in other cities of the country. The plant has already got an approval from various agencies.

The garbage of the city will be segregated as combustible and non-combustible. At least 90 per cent of the garbage has been identified as combustible and this will help in producing electricity.
