Conclave on best cardiac practices begins

The controversy arising out of treatment for blockage of arteries, non-surgical options for closing birth defects and etiology of atherosclerosis (blockage of arteries) are some of the key issues listed for discussion at a two-day seminar being organised by the Escorts Hospital and Research Centre Limited, Faridabad, at Hill View hotel near Surajkund to mark the World Heart Day (September 28).

Dr N. K. Pandey, Head of the Department of Surgery at Escorts Hospital and Research Centre in Faridabad, inaugurated the seminar on Saturday evening. The objective of holding the seminar by bringing together more than 200 cardiologists from Delhi, Haryana, parts of Punjab, Rajasthan and western Uttar Pradesh is to review and evaluate the current best cardiac practices based on guidelines and evidence based medicine in the field of cardiology.

Participants in the first session on controversy in cardiology are Dr Ravi Kasliwal, Head of the Department of Cardiology at Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre, Delhi, Dr Suman Bhandari, Interventional Cardiologist from Escorts Hospital and Research Centre Limited, Faridabad and Dr Naresh Trehan, Executive Director of Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre, Delhi.

The second session, scheduled for Sunday morning is on etiology of atherosclerosis. Dr R. K. Dhawan and Dr P. K. Babbar, cardiologists will present their views on the subject. In the same session, cardiologists will discuss the recommendations of the Joint National Commission on prevention, detection, evaluation and treatment of blood pressure. The Commission was created by the US Department of Health and Human Services.

The next session titled ‘Cooling off versus early angiography’ will deal with the treatment options in case of a heart attack. “Cardiologists, Dr Anil Saxena and Dr Sanjay Mittal will discuss whether a person who suffers a heart attack should be exclusively managed by drugs or should be immediately angiographed,” said Dr Pandey.

The same session includes a presentation on ‘Closing birth defects non-surgically’ by Dr S. Radhakrishna, paediatric cardiac surgeon at the Faridabad centre. The next session will deal with ‘Management of Arrhythmia’ and ‘Management of congestive heart failure.’

In the concluding session, Dr Pandey will present a video assisted thoracoscopic surgery on minimal invasive surgery for lung and other chest diseases. Dr Pramod Mittal, Cardiac Surgeon at the Faridabad, will speak on beating heart surgery. The seminar will also have a live demonstration of cardiac surgery and angioplasty.

Dr Pandey says, “India is poised to become the healthcare destination of the world and this seminar on best cardiac practices provides us a platform to highlight the new practices and technologies in cardiology. Promoting eye donation: Venu Charitable Society has set up its first eye donation centre in Faridabad to encourage eye donation. The initiative is guided by the noble objective of restoring the sight of hundreds of underprivileged sightless persons in need of a cornea transplant. Ms Tanuja Joshi, Director, Venu Eye Instiutute and President, Eye Bank Association of India says, “With the opening of the eye donation centre within the city, we hope to increase the number of yes collected. We take this opportunity to extend our appeal to all people in this region to take up the cause of eye donation in their families and help us in this noble mission.”

Experts at the eye donation centre can be contacted at 5020256. The following facts on eye donation ought to be kept in mind. Eyes are donated within 6-8 hours of death.

One eye donation gives sight to two persons. Only the cornea is used for transplanting. The total time of cornea removal is 15 to 20 minutes. People of any age, sex or blood group can donate eyes. Persons who wear spectacles or suffer from hypertension or diabetes can also donate eyes. Eyes are never bought or sold. All religions endorse eye donation.

According to the institute, about 11 lakh persons in India are suffering from corneal blindness. Another 21,000 cases are added every year for corneal transplant is needed. Although 90 lakh deaths were registered in the country last year, only 19,000 eyes were donated instead of the potential 90 lakh pairs of eyes, which could have restored the sight of 1.8 crore visually impaired persons.

Spreading awareness on kidney diseases: Pushpawati Singhania Research Institute for Liver, Renal and Digestive Diseases (PSRI) organised on Saturday a special patient education programme to educate patients and their relatives on various aspects of kidney diseases.

The programme was followed by an interactive session. Kidney specialists at PSRI, Dr K. K. Malhotra, Dr Sanjiv Saxena and Dr K. N. Singh discusses common kidney diseases, their manifestations and broad principles of treating such disorders. They also talked about new methods of treating advances kidney failure as dialysis and kidney transplantation. Dr Malhotra said those patients suffering from high blood pressure and diabetes must get a kidney check-up regularly as these diseases can damage the kidney, if not treated on time.

Ms Neelanjana Singh, senior dietician at PSRI, highlighted the role of proper diet in management of kidney diseases and circulated a booklet on the subject.

Free consultation at Arogya’03: SBL, a homeopathic medicines manufacturing company in India, is offering free consultation at Arogya’03, a health fair, which will concluded at Pragati Maidan on September 29.

Aimed at presenting the strength of alternative systems of medicine, Arogya was started by the India Trade Promotion Organisation in collaboration with the Indian Systems of Medicine and Homeopathy, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Dr Bina Thomas, Head, Research and Development, SBL and Ms Namita Dhingra, former associate of Dr Jugal Kishore will offer consultation at the fair. According to Dr Thomas, “Arogya annually provides the homeopathy industry an opportunity to highlight the efficacy and strengths of this form of treatment.”

Seminar on quackery: Delhi Medical Association (DMA) is organising a seminar on how to save people from quacks to mark the national anti-quackery day on October 2. DMA president Dr Anil Bansal is hopeful that presidents and secretaries of various branches of Indian Medical Association in northern India will turn up for the seminar at DMA Hall in Daryaganj.

Representatives of Chemist Associations and Pharmaceutical Industries are also expected to participate in the seminar along with the president of the Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA), Mr A.N. Mishra, and consumer activist, Ram Khanna. After the seminar, the participants will sit in dharna at Rajghat and take an oath to continue their eight-year-old agitation against quackery.

According to Dr Bansal, about 40,000 quacks in Delhi and five lakh quacks in the country play with the lives of patients everyday.

Heartening political will: The Bharatiya Janata Party’s Doctor Cell is holding a free heart check-up camp at Arya Samaj temple in D block, Saket on Sunday, to mark the World Heart Day. The endeavour is supported by the Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre (EHIRC), Delhi and Zydus Cadila, a pharmaceutical company. Dr S. C. L Gupta, National Joint Convenor of the cell and former president of Delhi Medical Association says that the camp will offer free consultation and free screening for blood sugar, ECG and eco-cardiogram, if needed.

He said that the cell has already registered 150 heart patients who cannot afford these tests. The camp will be inaugurated at 10 am by Minister of State for Agriculture, Mr Hukum Deo Narayan Singh. It will offer free services till 1.30 pm.

India, Iran share golds in Devi Lal Wrestling

India and Iran shared two gold medals each in the first Ch. Devi Lal Gold Cup World Free Style Wrestling Tournament at the Ganga School premises at Hiran Kudna.
Iran annexed the team title bagging 36 points while India finished second on 34 points. India C and B took the third and fourth positions respectively.

Kripa Shankar Patel beat Gyanender by fall in four minutes 24 seconds to lift the 55kg gold in an all-Indian final. Sushil Kumar fetched the second gold for India when he defeated Farokh Kia Kojori of Iran B in the 60kg on points. Amin Rashid Lamir of Iran B bagged the 120kg title when he scored a 4-1 points verdict against Sohan Singh of India B. Hasan Tahmasebi of Iran defeated Shokinder Tomar of India C on points to win the 66kg gold.

In the semi-final bouts, Farokh Kia Kojori of Iran beat Devender of India and Sushil Kumar beat Bijender in the 60kg, Bahman Tayebi of Iran beat Sohan Singh of India in the 120kg, Ramesh Kumar of India beat Ombir on points in the 66kg and Mehadi Nikmanesh of Iran beat Bijender on points in the 60kg.

Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala and Ajay Singh Chautala gave away the prizes.

Simla Youngs toy with Hindustan

Simla Youngs scored an emphatic 3-0 victory against Hindustan Club in the Lt. Governor’s Cup Football Tournament at the Ambedkar Stadium on Saturday. Inside-left Konthang, inside-right Hitender Singh Rawat and outside-left Zothran Zulla were the goal-scorers.

Raisina Sporting Union defeated Royal Rangers, also by 3-0. Riyazul Islam opened the account in the first half while substitute Debasis Kundu and striker Asis Das scored the second and third goal, respectively.

New Delhi Heroes defeated Ahbab 5-2 in the third match. Ahbab took the lead through Gourav Patra. Palme Poun Pangai equalised for Heroes. Abhishek put them in the lead while Ahbab pulled off the equaliser through Gaurav Patra to complete the first half scoring.

On resumption, Heroes slotted in three more goals through Deepak, Kuldeep and Palm Poun Pangai to win the argument in their favour.

Sunday’s fixture: City vs Goans (1.30 pm); Shastri vs Indian National (3.30 pm)—Ambedkar Stadium.

Priyank powers St Marks to victory

Bal Bharati: 76 all out in 31.2 overs (Priyank Tehlan 4 for 11, Ankush Pawar 3 for 5).

MEG, Bangalore defeated ASC 83-62 to annex the Army Cluster-1 Basketball Championship at the Army Headquarters Signal Regimental court on Saturday. Tinu Joseph scored 22 points and Peter John contributed 17.

Earlier, MEG defeated Signals 75-58 while ASC beat Artillery Centre 76-55 in the semi-finals. Artillery Centre later defeated Signals 75-67 in the play-off for the third place.

Salwan Boys lift cricket title

New Delhi: Deadly bowling by Narender Singh (3 for 12) and a dashing knock of 45 by Yogesh Nagar helped Salwan Boys School defeat Ramjas School No 2 by eight wickets and annexed the Ramjas Inter-School Under-17 Cricket Tournament Trophy at the Ramjas Sports Complex ground.

Narender Singh of Salwan School was adjudged the man of the match. Rahul Yadav got the best batsman award while Manoj Gupta received the best bowler award. Yogesh Nagar was declared the man of the tournament. Sawan Saini got the best disciplined player award.

C K Khanna gets another term as NCA V-C

Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) senior vice-president C. K. Khanna has been re-appointed vice-chairman of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India at the Board’s Annual General Meeting in Kolkata on Saturday.

Former Indian cricket captain Sunil Gavaskar has been elected as the chairman of the NCA while Brijesh Patel would be the director.

Special aid to Saini

Faridabad, September 27
The Principal of the Gargi College in Delhi has given a special aid of Rs 10,000 to the well-known skator and national champion Khushboo Saini. Saini will be part of the Indian team due to participate in the world championship to be held in Venezuela in November this year.

Ms Saini, who had passed out her plus two from DAV School here, has got admission in Gargi College for her undergraduate studies. TNS
