Tarun Sangha set up title clash with Air Force
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, September 22
Tarun Sangha scored a lone goal victory against Shahdara in the second leg of the second semi-final of the Delhi Soccer Association-ONGC Senior Division Football League Championship at the Ambedkar Stadium on Monday.

Tarun Sangha will take on defending champions Indian Air Force, New Delhi in the title clash on September 24 (Wednesday) at 3. 30 pm. Delhi Assembly Speaker Subhash Chopra will be the chief guest.

In an absorbing contest, Tarun Sangha mounted pressure on the rival goal with a series of raids fashioned by their medios Debabratha Ghosh, Prabir Roy and Ram Hasda. But their forwards Hara Dhan Kora and Pushpender Dhondiyal failed to seize the opportunities.

Shahdara also made a few counter attacks, marshalled by their seasoned campaigners Dharam Singh Negi and Bhupender Thakur. But no goal materialised in the first half.

On resumption, Tarun Sangha forged ahead when striker Hira Dhan Kora found the target from a goal mouth scramble in the 47th minute.

In the rest of the session, both the teams strove hard to hit the target, but no other goal could be scored. There will be no match on Tuesday.

Kaif plays stellar knock in title victory
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, September 22
India star Mohd Kaif played a stellar knock of 70 to help Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) beat Indian Airlines by seven wickets in the final of the All-India Public Sector Cricket Tournament at the Central Secretariat ground on Monday.

Batting first, Indian Airlines were given a respectable total thanks to the 85-run second-wicket partnership between J Arun Kumar and Manvinder Bisla. But the Indian Airlines total of 226 proved inadequate as ONGC were given a flying start by Gagan Khoda and Sandeep Sharma who put on 99 runs for the opening wicket. And then Mohd Kaif and Mithun Minhas swung their blades around like swathes to score some fast runs to help their team post a comfortable title victory.

Scores: Indian Airlines: 226 for 9 in 40 overs (Manavender Bisla 57, J Arun Kumar 33, Shafiq Kant 28, Joginder Sharma 3 for 48, Amit Uniyal 2 for 34).

Karthikeyan finishes fourth
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, September 22
Narain Karthikeyan finished fourth in a fast-paced race held at the A-1 Ring, Austria at the Superfund World Series by Nissan Championship. Hampered by mechanical failures and on-track incidents, Narain did, however, manage to garner valuable points to remain second overall in the championship with three more circuits to go.

Narain said after the race that “I deal with on-track incidents at over 150mph in the best way that I can, which of course, is to try and avoids collision. When Siedler moved out of the way for Montagny, they blocked me. I had no choice but to go off-track, control the car and recover for fourth place. These things are not predictable. We are not playing chess out there. I know that I have the pace and the racing skills to win and the Tata Cardlin Team offers me full support. I am racing against the best drivers outside F1 and reaching there is my next and ultimate goal”.

The next race of the Superfund Series will be held at Catalunya, Spain on October 5.
