Promote cue sport in India, says Alok
Arvind Katyal

Chandigarh, September 22
‘Cue sport, involving three events, billiards, snooker and pool, is now increasingly becoming popular in this part of the country’, feels Alok Kumar, who was recently given Arjuna Award for his stupendous achievements last year. He has come to take part in the third National Pool Championship being played at the Chandigarh Club. He has proved his prowess in this field. He has the distinction of winning bronze medal in the World Billiards Championship held in Sydney in 2002, besides winning many national titles.

Alok shifted from badminton to billiards more than a decade ago. He was a resident of Sangrur at that time. Now, he has set his eyes on the forthcoming World Billiards Meet to be held at Hyderabad in November. Only a few days back, the Billiards and Snooker Federation of India had announced that Alok Kumar will also take part in the World Snooker Meet to be held in China from October 11. The other two Indian players selected for the meet are Yasin Merchant and Pankaj Advani.

According to Alok, pool is still in infancy stage in India, but it is relatively simple to understand than both billiards and snooker. He said, more tournaments should be held at sub-junior and junior level to give boost to the sport.

On delayed nomination for the Arjuna Award, he said, it was mainly because of the positive role played by media, which highlighted the ignoring of outstanding players like Anjali Bhagwat, that they got the prestigious award.

He said the inclusion of two former sportspersons, Raja Randhir Singh and MP Ganesh, in the Olympic Preparation Committee was a must. He expressed surprise as to why the names of these two eminent sports dignitaries were excluded.

On the issue foreign training, he wished if he could also get a chance to have intensive training, in England, which had the best of the snooker coaches.

He was happy at the record number of entries received for the ongoing National Pool Championship. He said it was for the first time ever since the pool event was introduced at the national level that 32 groups had been formed having four players each.

He said, there was a need to introduce cue sport in the National School Games. He said it was now a medal sport in the Asian Games, so there should not be any hitch on the part of the authorities to give priority to the development of this sport in the country.
