Srinagar, September 18
The Army foiled an infiltration bid with the killing of four foreign militants in the Gulmarg sector of Baramula district last night.

A defence spokesman said here that all four infiltrators were Pakistani militants attempting to infiltrate into this side of the LoC. Four AK-47 rifles, two radio sets and some explosives and warlike stores were seized from the site of the encounter.

The identity of the militants was being ascertained, the spokesman said. He added that the seizure of currencies of Saudia Arabia and Pakistan, documents and a new weapons system indicated that they were Pakistani militants.

So far the Army has foiled 18 infiltration attempts during the first 18 days of this month, in which at least 60 infiltrators were killed along the LoC, the spokesman said. Of these, 21 were killed in Baramula and Kupwara districts in north Kashmir, he added. These infiltration attempts had reached a “stage of desperation”, the spokesman said.

Referring to the recent killings of infiltrators and recoveries made from them along the LoC, the spokesman claimed that there was ample proof that Pakistani ISI and the Afghani Taliban were involved in the abetment of infiltration along the LoC. This was clear from the types of weapons and currency seized during the recent weeks.

The seizures in Kupwara district recently included nine rucksacks of arms and ammunition and some currency. At least 2,880 rounds of AK-47 rifles, 30 grenades, several RPG rockets besides Afghan currency.

JAMMU: The Army shot eight terrorists who were on Thursday trying to infiltrate into the Indian territory in the Naushera sector in Rajouri from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

Reports said the group of eight terrorists was attempting to cross into Rajouri district early on Thursday morning when they were spotted by an Army patrol. The Army personnel warned the militants who continued advancing.

The bodies of the terrorists were still lying at the Line of Control (LoC) as the place was within the shooting range of the Pakistani troops.

Meanwhile, an SPO, Sher Singh was injured as terrorists opened fire on a police party at Surange in the Gandoh area of Doda district.

A terrorist, Qasim, belonging to the Lashkar-e-Toiba (Let) was arrested by the police in Chatter village of Gandoh. A hand grenade was seized from him.

Defence forces believe that terrorists operating in Jammu and Kashmir are in possession of shoulder-fired missiles that can target planes, a top Indian Air Force (IAF) official said here on Thursday.

“There is a threat and a persistent one on this account,” IAF’s Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Air Command, Air Marshal A.R. Gandhi, said on reports about acquiring of these missiles by terrorists.

He said although such missiles had not been used so far, the IAF was taking all necessary precautions to ensure safety.

“We have evolved procedures and are using protective devices to ensure safety of our planes,” Air Marshal Gandhi said.

On the recent move to acquire Hawk AJTs, he dispelled doubts over their efficacy and said “we are getting what we asked for”.

“Technology is constantly improving in the world and if necessary, technology of these AJTs can also be upgraded after induction,” he said.
