Bowlers vie to be the fastest

Nearly 1,000 cricket fans mostly cricketers took part in the second leg of the “Scorpio Speedster Fastest Bowler Hunt” organised under the banner of the IMG at the grounds of DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8.

The sponsors of the event, Mahindra and Mahindra, Timex watches and ESPN, attracted the crowd by making announcements.

The boys had lined up well before the scheduled time of 4 pm at the venue. They had to wait for almost two hours for their turn since each bowler was given three chances to bowl.

Jagdish Kumar (27) of SAS Nagar bowled at 124 kmph and another boy, Lalit Mohan, who hails from Nawanshahr (Punjab), also bowled at 124 kmph. Vishvas Bhalla of Chandigarh generated a pace of 123 kmph. Another impressive performance came from 18-year-old Syed Mohammad Ali, who has just cleared his Class XII examination from Yadavindra Public School, Patiala. He bowled at a speed of 122 kmph. He is hopeful of performing better since top 10 will get a chance to vie for top honours in the tomorrow’s finals.

Comedian Jaspal Bhatti kept the crowd amused. He also tried his arm at bowling. Abhishek Aggarwal, one of the organisers, said such carnivals would be made an annual feature.

Swimming meet

The 15th Chandigarh Open Senior, Junior and Sub-Junior (men and women) Swimming Championships will be held at the Panjab University swimming pool here on September 20 and 21, according to Mr J.P. Sharma, general secretary, Chandigarh Swimming Association.

The championship will be inaugurated on September 20 at 2.30 pm. Entries may be sent to 168, Sector 15-A, Chandigarh, or the venue.

Football tourneys

Sanjay Public School will organise the Under-16 Boys Football Tournament for Sanjay Trophy from September 30 to October 2 at the football stadium, Sector 17, here under the aegis of the Chandigarh Football Association. Schools can send their list of players to the CFA. The opening ceremony will be held on September 30 at 10 am.

The North Zone CBSE Cluster-XI Football Tournament (under 19) for boys of affiliated CBSE north zone schools will be held from October 3 to October 5 at the football stadium, Sector 17, under the supervision of the Chandigarh Football Association.

Wrestlers felicitated

Two Indian wrestlers, Sunil Kumar (60 kg) and Sujit Mann(74 kg) who qualified for the Olympics by attaining fourth and eighth positions, respectively, in the 37th Senior World Wrestling Championship at New York, were felicitated by the president of the Wrestling Federation of India, Mr M.S. Malik.

Badminton contingent

The Chandigarh badminton contingent for the North Zone Inter-State Badminton Meet scheduled to be held in Shimla from September 20 was announced this evening by the Chandigarh Badminton Association. According to Mr T.P.S. Puri, general secretary of the association, the teams will play in four events — Rahimtoola Cup, Chadha Cup, Narang Cup and Shafi Qureshi Cup.

Mr Surinder Mahajan and Mr Rajiv Tuli will accompany the contingent as coaches, while Mr Vijay Sharma as manager.

Teams: Men: Ashish Sharma, Deepak Sidhu, Akash Sethi,Vivek Sharma, Gurjeet Bajwa and Amit Sachdeva. Women: H. Sarda, Isha Sharma and Mala Gaba. Junior boys: Vikas, Puneet Bansal, Robin and Neeraj. Junior girls: Mala Gaba, Harleen, Kanika and Roma.

Football team

The Chandigarh team will take part in the third Junior Girls National Football Championship to be held from September 22 to October 8 at Haldwani (Uttaranchal). Ms Simran Sadana of Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Sector 26, will lead the team, according to Mr Ravinder Talwar, president, Chandigarh Football Association. The other members of the team are: Ms Manmeet, Rekha, Rupinder, Sunab, Jasdeep, Poonam, Richa, Har Anchal, Stangel, Konia, Pooja, Reetu, Lata, Neeta, Harnoop, Aarti, Anjana, Vajeeta, Satpreet. The team will play its first match on September 23 against Maharashtra.
