6.5 kg tumour removed from kidney
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, September 16
Doctors at the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) claimed to have removed a 6.5 kg kidney tumour from the body of a 47-year-old male patient.
According to a press note, Dr M.L. Gupta, Professor and Head, Surgery Department, and his team of surgeons comprising Dr Jasdeep Singh, Dr Sandeep Sharma and Dr Sanjeev Singla removed the tumour. It had occupied almost half of the abdomen and had filled the kidney cavity.

While giving details, Dr Gupta said: “The patient, Kewal Singh, was brought to the hospital with a complaint of swelling on the left side of the abdomen. At that time he did not know that he was carrying a 6.5 kg tumour inside his 150 gm kidney.

As these tumours grow silently, the patient had no pain and it was the swelling of the abdomen that raised the suspicion. The patient was investigated and during an ultra-sound examination it was found that he was having a big tumour in the left kidney. A surgery was planned and the tumour was removed in a four-hour-long operation.

Usually such tumours average 7-8 cm in diameter. These tumours are associated with a wide variety of symptoms. The most common being flank pain, blood in the urine or a swelling detected by the patient. Other rare symptoms may be fever, fatigue and weight loss.
