Shahdara, Air Force brighten semis prospects

New Delhi, September 15
Shahdara and defending champions Air Force, New Delhi brightened their prospects for earning semi-final berths when they scored victories in contrasting styles in Group B Super League matches of the Delhi Soccer Association Senior Division Football League Championship at the Ambedkar Stadium on Monday. Shahdara trounced City Club 6-1 while Air Force edged past Simla Youngs 1-0.

Shahdara were jolted out of their wits when City took the lead in the sixth minute through striker Navin Malik, who took advantage of a defensive lapse.

Shahdara then fought back to flood the City citadel with goals.

Inside-left Veer Singh fashioned Shahdara’s revival with a three-goal blitz (no hattrick) when he scored the equaliser in the 14th minute, and also added the third goal in the 22nd minute and the sixth goal in the 80th minute. Dharam Singh Negi slotted home a brace while Pramod Rawat accounted for the goal.

Shahdara have earned seven points from three matches and will take on Air Force in their last league match.

Air Force too have seven points from three matches.

In the second match, Air Force scored a lone-goal victory against Simla Youngs.

Striker L Danny converted a pass from Kalyan Pal to knock in the match-winner in the 30th minute. Kalyan Pal, who received two yellow cards, will miss the next match.

Tuesday’s fixtures: Indian National vs Raisina Sporting (2.15 pm); Hindustan vs Tarun Sangha (4 pm)—Ambedkar Stadium.

Super Six-a-Side Cricket formed

A Super Six-a-Side Cricket Federation of India has been formed with Dr S. S. Sareen as the executive president. The office-bearers were elected at the first meeting of the federation in Chandigarh recently.

Mr M L Sharma has been elected the president of the federation while Krishan Kumar and J S Lamba will be the general secretary and treasurer respectively. Dr Sareen, who is also the joint secretary of the Delhi and District Cricket Association, announced in Delhi on Monday that the first Super Six-a-Side National Championship will be held in Chandigarh from October 2 to 5. Teams from 17 States are expected to participate in the Nationals.

Dr Sareen said the Super Six Cricket Federation has been formed with the aim of promoting variant version of limited-over cricket. He said the object of the federation would be to “promote the shorter version of traditional one-day format cricket to make the game more exciting and thrilling in a limited period of time; to encourage specialist batsmen and bowlers; to provide batting and bowling opportunities to all the players in a side; to provide opportunity to those players who are not selected to play in the traditional form of cricket being organised under the aegis of the Board of Control for Cricket in India; and to promote limited-over cricket among corporate houses to seek their active involvement in promoting cricket of variant type in the country.”

He said the rules of the game would be similar to the ICC and MCC rules applicable to one-day cricket matches, subject to minor changes, like each team will consist of six specialist batsmen and as many specialist bowlers etc.

Team TVS steals spotlight on dirt track

Team TVS Racing took the honours in the hotly-contested Gulf Dirt Track Challenge at Udaipur when they won four out of seven races. The battle for supremacy was fought between Team TVS and Team Yamaha, and TVS emerged triumphant in four races. However, in the most popular foreign motorcycles up to 250cc Group A category, TVS and Yamaha shared the honours. Team Yamaha emerged winners in race 1, but in race 2, last year’s National Motocross champion C Vijaykumar of Team TVS Race came with a vengeance to pip a strong field to the tape.

In the unmodified class, TVS Victor and TVS Fiero emerged winners by taking all top five positions of motorcycles above 80cc upto 110cc Group D four-stroke and motorcycles above 110cc upto 180cc Group D four-stroke races respectively. The top riders who rode with precision and dexterity were C D Jinan and Rustom Patel of Team TVS Racing. Team TVS Racing manager Thiruvengadam was ecstatic about the performance of his boys.

Lt. Governor’s Cup Soccer from Sept 25

New Delhi, September 15
Delhi Development Authority will organise the second prize money Lt. Governor’s Cup Football Tournament from September 25 to October 4 at the Ambedkar Stadium. Top 16 club teams of Delhi will participate in the tournament. The winners will pocket a cash prize of Rs 75,000 while the runners-up will receive Rs 45,000. The two semi-finalists will be richer by Rs 15,000 each. Entries, with a fee of Rs 300, will close with the organising secretary at the Yamuna Sports Complex, Surajmal Vihar or the Delhi Soccer Association office at the Ambedkar Stadium, on September 18.

Air Force soccer

The Air Force Civilians Inter-Command Football Championship will be held at the Central Civil Services ground at Vinay Marg on Tuesday at 3.45 pm. Air Marshal R C Mahadik, Air Officer in Charge, Administration, will be the chief guest. OSR

Modern School trounce J D Tytler

Modern School, Barakhamba Road crushed J D Tytler School by eight wickets in the 14th Radha Kishan Cricket Tournament at the Cambridge Foundation School at Rajouri Garden on Monday.

Scores: J D Tytler: 138 for 8 in 30 overs (Ujwal Nanda 49, 7x4, 54b; Abhiroop Basu 26, 3x4; Tanuj Gupta 21; Deepak Rajput 2 for 18, Ankit Lamba 2 for 30, Aviral Himmat 2 for 36, Karan Harit 1 for 18).

Modern School: 141 for 2 in 12.1 overs (Surya Azad 45, 5x4, 3x6; Deepak Rajput 73 n o, 8x4, 5x6, 44b).

Public Sector Cricket

The All-India Public Sector Cricket Tournament will be organised by the All-India Public Sector Promotion Board, at the Central Secretariat ground, Vinay Marg, from Tuesday. The participating teams are ONGC, BSNL, Coal India, Hudco, AAI, Air India, LIC, NLC, FCI, MTNL, Nalco, CWC, New India Assurance and Indian Airlines.

Vivek Samania selected coach

Vivek Samania, an employee of DPC School, has been selected as a coach of the Indian Wushu team for the seventh World Wushu Championship to be held at Macau, China, from November 2 to 8. The camp for the Indian team is being held at Imphal (Manipur) from September 15 to 25.

Saurav to feature in ‘Cricket Show’

Indian cricket captain Saurav Ganguly will feature in the ESPN’s “Cricket Show” where, for the first time, a playing captain of a national side will bring an insider’s view to cricket.

R. C. Venkteish of ESPN said the show will present cricket in its entirety to the viewer. He said an interactive analysis of the week’s cricket played the world over by the experts and the Indian captain will give the viewer a unique perspective.
