Marriage resorts again under IT scrutiny
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 5
Even though the marriage season is a few months away, marriage resorts on the outskirts of the city have once again come under the scrutiny of the Income Tax Department. Those who have invested in infrastructure at the marriage resorts could also be in trouble.

Apprehending evasion of income tax, sleuths of the Income Tax Department from the Patiala range have been busy for the past few days in conducting an extensive survey at Sohi Banquets, a marriage resort in Zirakpur. The survey would be extended to other marriage resorts in the area, said a senior officer in the department. Sources in the department said the investment made in raising a huge structure on a six-acre plot, collections from marriage functions and the related business of catering and tent houses had come under the scrutiny of the IT sleuths. The account books and financial records of the marriage resort had been taken into possession by assessing officers.

It may be mentioned here that about 10 months ago, the Chandigarh range of the Income Tax Department, North-West region, launching a major drive to survey the business activity of tent houses and catering agencies at marriage resorts. Officials of the Income Tax Department had prepared a directory of leading tent houses, marriage resorts and restaurants which were fudging income records despite doing brisk business.

The Intelligence Wing of the department had conducted a survey of the modus operandi of these operators and mode of payments by the parties. In December last year, a survey had been carried out on the premises of about 10 marriage resorts in the region. The sources said after the survey, the department had found evasion of income tax in crores. A senior officer said it had been noticed that marriage resorts were functioning as “one-stop shops” for marriages and other parties, where all facilities, including serving meals and drinks, and arrangement of pandits, granthis, etc for marriage ceremonies, were made available.

Wedding wealth: After the UT Administration launched a major drive to demolish unauthorised structures of marriage resorts owned by influential persons, the business activity has shifted to marriage resorts in the surrounding areas of Punjab. Most of the resorts in Zirakpur are located along the Ambala-Kalka and Chandigarh-Patiala highways. The charges per marriage function, including the cost of erecting tents and catering service, start from a few lakhs. Those who make payments, mostly in cash, for organising lavish marriage parties could also come under the scanner.
