Stress laid on quality of pharmaceuticals

The Indian Pharmaceutical Industry will have to adopt a culture of quality management and in-built quality with regard to all facets of the pharmaceutical operation in order to succeed globally.

This was stated by Dr C.L. Kaul, Director National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), at the inauguration of a three-week intensive course on “Modern analytical techniques in quality control of drugs and pharmaceuticals” inaugurated at NIPER here on Monday.

Dr K.P. Madhusudanan, Head, Regional Sophisticated Instrumentation Centre, Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow, while speaking in his inaugural address on “Mass spectrometry an indispensable tool for pharmaceutical analysis” provided an overview of the role modern analytical techniques with regard to pharmaceutical analysis. He specifically discussed the applications of mass spectrometry in this area.

Prof K.K. Bhutani, Dean, NIPER, said 30 participants from Armenia, Bhutan, Myanmar, Mali, Thailand, Ukraine, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Yemen, Nigeria, Russia, Seychelles, Ivory Coast and Mauritius were taking part in the deliberations.

About 10 delegates from the Indian pharmaceutical industry and academic institutions are attending the course, which has been sponsored by the Government of India, Ministry of External Affairs, (TC division), under ITEC and SCAAP programme.

Golf championship from Sept 12

Chandigarh, September 3
The Chandigarh Golf Association will hold the fourth Stroh Golf State Championship on September 12 and 13 at the Chandigarh Golf Club. The categories will include under-10, 11-12 years, 13-14 years,15-17 years and 18 years and above and in under-18 in girls section.

According to Mr D.P. Azad, president of the CGA, entries close on September 10 at 5 pm.

Weightlifting championship

Cpl Jai Prakash of the Maintenance Command won three titles in the 62-kg section in snatch, clean and jerk and total event on the second day of the Air Force Weightlifting Championship here today at the 3 BRD. In the 69-kg section, P.K. Nayak of the Maintenance Command won snatch event, while Ramesh of the SAC won titles in clean and jerk and total weight sections. In the 77-kg section, K. Murgan of the Maintenance Command bagged three titles in all three categories.

Girls’ football camp

The Chandigarh Football Association has selected 25 girls for a coaching camp prior to their selection in the third Under-19 girls football championship to be held at Haldwani, Uttaranchal, from September 22 to October 8. According to Mr Ravinder Talwar, president of the association, the camp will begin tomorrow at the DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8.

The team includes Kanika, Aniva, Shabreet, Roziks and Jasbir, Nidhi Sharma, Haranchal, Deepika, Anushree, Manmeet, Stanzein, Aarti, Alisha, Simran Sardana, Sharan, Jasveen, Aarman, Divya, Baljeet Kaur, Rigzin Agmo, Satpreet, Monika Sharma, Sunita, Neeta and Aarti.

UT swimming tourney

The sub-junior, junior and senior swimming tournament, organised by the UT Sports Department, will begin here tomorrow at the Sector 23 swimming pool. As many as 100 entries were received for this two-day meet, which will have cash prizes ranging from Rs 100 to 250.

Football camp

A football camp was organised at Satluj Public School, Sector 4, Panchkula, where the president of the Indian Amateur Australian Football Association, Mr Brian Clark, was the chief guest. Mr Chander Mohan, MLA, Kalka, inaugurated the camp. Later, Mr Chander Mohan stressed on the need of making popular football in the region.

Badminton association

The Chandigarh Badminton Association has decided to give a cash prize of Rs 5100 to Mandeep Singh, who had secured second place in the Mumbai Major Badminton Tournament recently. Oscar Bansal, another budding shuttler of the city, will be given a cash award of Rs 2100. Mr Surinder Mahajan, SAI coach, who trained these youngsters will also be honoured.

Speed up development, Adviser asks senior officers

The issue of inadequate utilisation of budgetary allocation by various departments of the Chandigarh Administration was again raised yesterday at the senior officers’ conference of the Chandigarh Administration. The Adviser to the UT Administrator, Mr Virendra Singh, has asked for speeding up matters related to the development of the city as the first five months of the financial year have already elapsed.

Besides this, it was decided to shortly start the construction work of four-storeyed building of the inter- state bus terminus, Sector 43. The Adviser also ordered necessary action regarding the commencement of the Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan. He also stressed upon the need to take steps to further develop the infrastructure of government schools.

The conference, besides reviewing the plan and non-plan expenditure and revenue receipts, also decided to clear the backlog of posts reserved for the Scheduled Castes categories through special recruitment drive. It was also decided to construct night shelters at various places in the city and a detailed report regarding the construction of a cycle track was also tabled.

The Chief Engineers of the Municipal Corporation and UT, Chandigarh, were asked for the progress report on the uprooting of the congress grass. Regarding the formulation of citizen charter all heads of departments were asked to furnish reports in this regard.

It was further decided that all head of departments would give the progress report on the preparation of a model calendar for the departmental promotion committees for the year 2002-03 and 2003-04.

The officers present at the conference were the Home Secretary, Mr R.S.Gujral; the Finance Secretary, Mr Karan A.Singh; the Chairman of the housing board, Mr G.K.Marwah; the Commissioner, MCC, Mr M.P.Singh; the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Arun Kumar; the Chief Engineer, UT, Mr Puranjit Singh; the Chief Engineer, MC, Mr V.K.Bhardwaj and the Chief Architect, UT, Mrs Renu Saigal.
