Town erupts over arrest of former municipal chiefs

Following the arrests of Mr Rajendra Singh Lodha and Mr Dalip Singh, both former presidents of the Municipal Committee of Kanina (35 km from Rewari), the Chautala regime is drawing flak for its alleged attempt to crush its political adversaries.

PM to commission Metro corridor on Oct 2
New Delhi, August 27
The 4.5-km Tis Hazari–Tri Nagar corridor of Delhi Metro will become operational on October 2. Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee will commission the corridor on that day.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is operating between Shahdara and Tis Hazari (8.3 km.) After October 2, the DMRC’s service will extend to 12.8 km.

Haryana Govt determined to root out illegal pumps
Gurgaon, August 27
The stiff resistance in certain quarters notwithstanding, the district administration is determined to continue with its campaign against unauthorised installation of submersible and other electricity operated pumps to meet the challenge of shrinking underground water table.

Panic at WTC as armed desperado barges in
New Delhi, August 27
In a daring daylight robbery in the heart of the Capital, a man barged into the office of the Swiss International Airlines at World Trade Centre and decamped with Rs 10,000 after firing two shots in the air. No one was reported hurt in the incident which caused considerable panic in the commercial centre. Employees of various offices located on the same floor and a large number of visitors rushed out in panic after hearing the gun shots.

Passengers force GRP cops to return extortion sum
Sonepat, August 27
An incident of extortion of Rs 7,400 from four passengers of the Uchahar Express by the GRP constables was reported at Ganaur railway station last evening. However, on the intervention of the daily passengers the constables were handed over to the GRP authorities at Ganaur.

60-year-old dies in police custody
Panipat, August 27
Police brutality is at work again. This time the alleged police torture resulted in the death of 60-year-old Jagphul Singh, a resident of Garhi Chhajju village in the district, yesterday.

Man found hanging in YMCA hostel
New Delhi, August 27
Michael Kharpuri (32), hailing from the North-East, was found dead in the YMCA hostel here this morning. He was found hanging in his room and the body was discovered by the hostel attendants. Since the deceased was last seen with a woman last night, the police have launched a hunt to trace the woman.

Stargazers in the Capital do not want to miss their rendezvous with Mars. The celestial feat has generated much interest in the city and people have been thronging Nehru Planetarium for the first ‘Mars watch’ in 60,000 years. To facilitate the encounter, the planetarium has put up five telescopes.

DPCC won’t allow CAS at any cost
New Delhi, August 27
The Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee on Wednesday said it was totally against the implementation of Conditional Access System and that it would not allow CAS to be introduced in NCT of Delhi “at any cost”.

Govt rules out ban on production of milk items
New Delhi, August 27
The Government of NCT of Delhi on Wednesday said the shortage of milk had been overcome to a large extent and that it did not propose to ban the production of milk products. Development Minister Haroon Yusuf told mediapersons that the situation would improve in a day or two after supplies of fresh milk and skimmed milk powder arrived from Gujarat.

During outgoing Chief Minister Mayawati’s tenure, the district administration’s attention had been riveted to developing Ambedkar villages in Ghaziabad and Gautam Budh Nagar districts. This was facilitated by issuing land allotment letters to the Dalits and removing encroachments on their land.

Monsoon rains, official apathy makes travelling a nightmare
Sonepat, August 27
The recent monsoon rains have caused damage to the 35-km long Sonepat-Gohana road at several places, where it has become unfit for vehicular traffic. According to a report, the state government had declared this road between Jind and Meerut via Gohana and Sonepat as part of the National Highway in order to facilitate the smooth flow of traffic.

The entire city with a population of more than two lakh remained waterless for at least 10 hours yesterday following disruption in the drinking water supply system owing to non-supply of power.
According to a report, the power supply breakdown occurred around 6.45 am and was restored around 6 pm.

Five of Chhota Nawab gang caught after encounter

Three criminals escape
Faridabad, August 27
Three persons accused of thefts and robberies gave the police the slip while they were lodged in the lock-up of Sector 7 police station last night.
The accused had been in police remand after their arrest on August 25.

Come October, and it’s time to visit Surajkund Tradefest

The one-year-old Surajkund Tradefest will be held for the second time at the same venue from October 3 to 12 next. The annual event, likely to attain a place of pride in the state-sponsored programmes, will again be held in makeshift tent-built halls, as the process of constructing a permanent built-up space on the lines of Pragati Maidan in New Delhi, is still to take a shape.

Three mentally challenged children from the BHEL-run special schools have won six medals at the recently concluded World Special Olympics 2003 in Dublin, Ireland. The children were part of the Indian contingent, which won 110 medals at the international event.
