National Sports Day may go unnoticed again
Arvind Katyal

Chandigarh, August 27
A few years back the Government of India has announced that August 29, the birth anniversary of hockey wizard Maj Dhyan Chand, will be celebrated as National Sports Day.

Though a few of the states have started celebrating this day by organising hockey matches and other activities, still the spirit is lacking.

This year, the Government of India will hold a sports function on August 29 in New Delhi, where Arjuna awards will be given.

In the past few years, in this region, it was Haryana which had been observing this day regularly. Last week the President of the Haryana Olympic Association, Mr Abhay Singh Chautala, has announced to organise hockey matches.

But in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh, no formal announcement in this regard has been made. Even though events like ‘run for fun’ are organised in various cities on different occasions, no such event is organised on this day.

A state-level hockey player said: “It is the moral duty of every sportsperson and sports organisation to host events on this day.”
