Mann’s exit a respite for senior doctors

Chandigarh, August 24
The exit of the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Director Principal, Dr S.B.S. Mann, has come as a big respite for senior faculty members of the institute, who feel that now they will get a fair chance once the post is filled through the Union Public Service Commission.

It is learnt that the coveted post would be advertised soon, as per the Medical Council of India (MCI) guidelines, wherein the appointment must be a regular one and not on deputation. Professor Mann was on deputation from the ENT Department from the PGI, where he would return after his resignation is accepted by the UT Administration.

“Finally we have succeeded in our mission, as we were opposed to a person coming on deputation, when equally competent people were there at the GMCH,” remarked a senior doctor. They feel that even though the post is open to anyone who meets the requirement from the entire country, at least they too stand a fair chance.

Professor Mann, whose tenure got over in June, had been continuing, as neither an officiating Director Principal had been appointed nor the post advertised. There had been a lot of resentment amongst senior faculty of the GMCH over a person coming on deputation and they had raised the issue with the UT Administration and even sent a letter to the Union Health and Family Welfare Minister.

Regarding the anomaly in the seniority list, the doctors felt that the appointment of the senior most doctor as the officiating Director Principal, was merely a stopgap arrangement, so it was inconsequential as to who was given the charge. Sources in the UT Administration said the senior most doctor at the GMCH would officiate till a regular appointment is made.

On the other hand some of the doctors feel that even if the selection is made through the UPSC, the seniority issue needs to be settled as some people are getting a raw deal. With two separate seniority lists, discontentment will continue. So settling the issue could help in creation of a healthy environment, majority of doctors feel.
