Gursharan refuses Bengal’s coaching offer
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, August 15
Former Test player Gursharan Singh has turned down a lucrative offer to coach the Bengal Ranji Trophy team due to his close association with the Gyan Bharti South Delhi Cricket Academy at Saket in South Delhi.

Gursharan’s involvement with the cricket academy is so total that he has decided to forsake, for the time being, the offer of the Bengal Cricket Association to coach the Bengal team.

Though the money was good, Gursharan felt that his absence from Delhi would have adversely affected the functioning of the Gyan Bharati Cricket Academy, which he has painstakingly nurtured to its present stature.

“All my hard work would go waste if I am not around to look after the academy,” Gursharan said.

His academy boasts of some of the brightest cricket talent in Delhi, and Gursharan has been putting his own experience as a Test player, to nurture the boys, some of whom, he feels, have a rosy cricket future, provided they maintain the same kind of devotion and enthusiasm for the game as they are displaying now.

The Gyan Bharati Academy is unlike other cricket academies as the principal of the Gyan Bharati School, Mr Shekhar, takes personal interest in the functioning of the academy.

Gursharan said this was the reason he was reluctant to shift base to Bengal, though the assignment would have fetched him a lot of personal mileage, the attractive pay packet apart.

Gursharan is also one of the coaches of the Zonal Academy of North Zone, run by the Delhi and District Cricket Association under the aegis of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

He plans to widen the scope of his cricket academy to make it the best in Delhi, unlike some other academies, which are basically money-spinning ventures.

Paschim Heroes clinch DSA B Division title
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, August 15
Paschim Heroes defeated Rohini Club 3-1 to annex the B Division title in the Delhi Soccer Association-SAIL Football League Championship at the Ambedkar Stadium on Friday. But both the winners and losers have qualified for the A Division from next season.

Paschim Heroes, combining well through their medios Rajesh Shoukeen, Mukesh and Khaleel, drew first blood in the third minute when inside-left Shoukeen placed the ball home from close. Though Paschim Heroes came by several other chances to score, their forwards failed to make use of them. Rohini took advantage of the confusion in the Paschim Heroes’ ranks to slot in the equaliser through defender Imtiaz in the 25th minute. On crossing over, Paschim Heroes, however, regained their scoring touch as Praveen Shoukeen struck again to put them in the lead while Dinesh Shoukeen completed the tally. Rohini were awarded a penalty kick at the fag end, but Lalit’s shot kissed the cross bar and went out.

Cosmos got walkover from Youngsters in a relegation match. Both the teams have been relegated to the B Division. The A Division Super League will start on Saturday with a match between Royal Rangers and Hans Club at 3.30 pm followed by a match between Youngmen and Ahbab Club at the Ambedkar Stadium.

Feroz Ali consolidates lead
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, August 15
Feroz Ali surged into a four-stroke lead when he fired a third round 69 in the Rs 8.5 lakh Cotton City Open Golf Championship at the par-72 Coimbatore Golf Club course, according to information reaching in Delhi. Vijay Kumar was placed second at one-over 217, while Mukesh Kumar and Delhi’s Pappan were tied for the third position at four-over 220. Digvijay Singh and Shiv Prakash were tied for the fifth position at five-over 221.

Feroz Ali, after a string of pars, made his first of five birdies on the par-5 fifth, which signalled the return of his famed form. With birdies on the ninth and tenth, Feroz was a man possessed. After driving into the fairway bunker on the 11th, Feroz chipped to 12-feet and sank a downhill putt for a birdie to go three strokes ahead of the field.

Feroz, sponsored by Air Sahara, landed in the trees on the next hole and went for the green from a difficult position.

His chip shot hit the mound on the left of the green and went over from where Feroz had to settle for a bogey.

However, he made amends on his favourite hole, the par-5 13th, with yet another birdie. However, the pick of Feroze’s round was a par, which he saved on the par-4 17th after his tee shot landed in the water hazard on the fairway. Feroz hit a four-iron shot to about 18 inches and made par.

Pappan’s new-found form at the Kashmir Open continued as he went on a birdie spree. Making a 15-feet birdie on the opening hole, he sunk a 25-footer on the par-4 third for another birdie. He made one more birdie on the ninth after missing an eagle from ten feet.
