Cholera: Red alert in Noida villages

Noida, August 6
The Medical Department of Gautam Budh Nagar has sounded a red alert following reports of cholera in some parts of the district. Chlorine tablets are being distributed in villages in the Dundahara area on the Noida-Ghaziabad border; medical teams have reportedly fanned out in the affected areas, according to the Chief Medical Officer, Dr Huq.

Diseases like cholera breaks out in the monsoon when heavy rain worsens the sanitary conditions. Dr Huq advised that water should be boiled before drinking. One tablet of chlorine can purify 20 litres of water, Dr Huq said.

Amity edge out Mother’s; DPS down Ryan

Amity School, Saket edged past Mother’s International School, IIT Gate 2-1 to enter the final of the boys under-14 section in the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association (DLTA) Tournament for Schools at the DLTA courts. In the second semi-final, Delhi Public School, Mathura Road beat Ryan School, Vasant Kunj 2-0.

Results: Amity beat Mother’s School 2-1: Akshay Kohli beat Subhash Rao 6-4, 6-1; Anugrah beat Aditya Dasgupta (Amity) 6-1, 6-1; Aditya and Akshay b Subhash and Jaskaran 6-2, 6-4. DPS beat Ryan: Yuki Bhambri b Arjun Choudhry 6-0, 6-3; Biraj b Dhruv Gupta 6-1, 6-3.

In the quarter-finals, Mother’s International beat DPS, Noida 2-0, Ryan beat Vasant Valley 2-0, DPS, Mathura Road beat DAV, Amritsar 2-0 and Amity beat Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan 2-0.

Results: Mothers’s beat DPS: Anugrah Chandra b Chaitanya Puri 6-0, 6-0; Subhash Chandra Rao b Shikaar Kapoor 6-4, 6-4. Ryan beat Vasant Valley: Arjun Choudhry b Rakshit Sharma 1-6, 6-3, 6-4; Biraj Sarkar b Ayush 6-3, 6-3. In the girls under-14 semi-finals, Modern School, Barakhamba Road beat DPS, R K Puram 2-1 (Radhika Malik b Garima Vatwani 6-1, 6-2; Karina Ahuja b Prerna Bhambri and Karina Ahuja and Garima b Prerna and Radhika 6-4, 5-7, 6-4) while Convent of Jesus and Mary accounted for Sanskriti 2-1 (Henna Kumar b Disha Sehgal 7-5, 6-1; Yajini Baluja b Rashi Kakkar 5-7, 7-5, 6-1; Disha and Yajini b Rashi and Heena 6-4, 3-6, 7-5) DPS, Mathura Road beat their Noida sisters 2-0 to set up a title clash against Modern School, Barakhamba Road, who got walk over from Springdales, Dhaula Kuan in the girls under-18 title clash.

Modern School will also fight it out in the boys under-18 title clash when they take on Vasant Valley. Modern beat Amity 2-0 while Vasant Valley sneaked past Summerfield 2-1 in the semi-final matches.

Earlier, in the quarter-finals, Modern beat DAV, Amritsar 2-0, Amity beat Cambridge, Srinivaspuri 2-1, Summerfield beat St. Columba’s 2-0 and Vasant Valley beat DPS 2-1.

Royal Rangers qualify for Super League

New Delhi, August 6
Royal Rangers defeated Glorious 2-0 to top Group A and qualify for the Super League of the Delhi Soccer Association-SAIL League Championship at the Ambedkar Stadium on Wednesday. Outside-left Daniel Hanghal struck a fine brace to help Royal Rangers score a comfortable win.

Royal Rangers have collected 19 points from seven matches while Glorious have secured 12 points from six matches. They will play their last match against Indian Air Force, Palam on August 8.

In another Group A match played at the Ambedkar Stadium, Bangadarshan edged past Delhi Veterans 2-1. Bangadarshan forged ahead in the fourth minute through inside-left Habib while Madan Aggarwal equalised for Veterans in the 34th minute. Outside-left Parveen slotted in the match-winner for Bangadarshan in the 48th minute.

Bangadarshan have collected five points from seven matches while Delhi Veterans have completed their engagements by collecting three points from seven games.

The Group C match between Youngmen and Young Boys, scheduled to be held at the Nehru Stadium, fell through as the ground was slushy due to waterlogging.

Thursday’s fixtures: Indian Air Force vs Glorious (3.30 pm); Garhwal Diamond vs Panchkuian (4.45 pm)—Ambedkar Stadium. Uttrakhand vs Youngsters—Nehru Stadium.

DPS to host World Cup for schools

New Delhi, August 6
Delhi Public School (DPS) Society will play host to the first World Cup Cricket Tournament for schools from December 1 to 13. Over 100 schools from India and various countries are expected to participate in the tournament.

The matches will be held on DPS grounds, and the entire network of the 120 schools of the society from India and abroad will be fully involved in the event.

The tournament will be held on a league-cum knockout basis in three phases.

The first phase will feature DPS Schools from all over India, and the matches will be held from October 1 to 13th. In the second phase, to be held from October 17 to 27, premier schools from the country outside the ambit of the DPS Society will take part.

And in the third phase, to be held from December 1 to 13, the grand finale will be held, featuring schools from various countries. Countries like Bangladesh, Malaysia and Sri Lanka have already confirmed their entries.

The tournament is the brainchild of DPS Society chairman Narendra Kumar with the full backing of principal Dr Shyama Chona.

Goel hopeful of Delhi bagging bid

New Delhi, August 6
Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Vijay Goel was confident that India would be awarded the 2010 Commonwealth Games, to be held in Delhi.
Mr Goel, who hosted a dinner in honour of the Commonwealth Games Federation Evaluation Commission headed by Mr Richard McColgan, felt that Delhi had all the required facilities to bag the games’ bid.

A cultural programme, based on the heritage of the old city of Chandni Chowk, was also presented to enthrall the seven-member commission. The visitors were impressed by the cultural programme and a gave a good appraisal of their findings in Delhi.

Mr Goel handed over a flame to Mr McColgan and the Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Vikram Verma and described it as a “flame of hope”.

Tanya makes mark in World Golf

Child prodigy Tanya Wadhwa, who returned a Grand Slam of wins at the Junior International Golf Circuit last year, put up yet another superb display on the World Junior Golf Circuit this year, with one win and two runner-up finishes.

She captured the US Kids World Championship at Williamburg, Virgina after finishing as runner-up at San Diego and the Optimist International Championship at the PGA National Resort.

Tanya’s performance comes in the wake of a brilliant performance by yet another Indian junior golfer, 11-year-old Varun Badhwar. Badhwar finished second at the Junior World Championship in July.

Ankita, Aarti enter badminton semis

Ankita of Ganga School beat Anita of Saint Martin School, Paschim Vihar 15-4, 15-10 to enter the semi-final of the Zonal Women’s Badminton Tournament. In another match, Aarti of Ganga School beat Himani of Saint Martin 15-6, 15-3 also to make the last four grade. Ganga beat Bosco School, Paschim Vihar 23-12 to enter the semi-final of the

Zonal Basketball Tournament held at the Bharti School. Samual top-scored with 13 points for the winners. In a football match, Ganga beat GL DAV School, Rohini 2-0 to qualify for the semi-final. K C Lal Ram Rohata scored both the goals.
